The widespread omnivory of consumers and the trophic complexity of marine ecosystems make it difficult to infer the feeding
ecology of species. The use of stable isotopic analysis plays a crucial role in elucidating trophic interactions. Here we
analysed δ15N, δ13C and δ34S in chick feathers, and we used a Bayesian triple-isotope mixing model to reconstruct the diet of a generalist predator,
the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) that breeds in the coastal upwelling area off northwest mainland Spain. The mixing model indicated that although chicks
from all colonies were fed with a high percentage of fish, there are geographical differences in their diets. While chicks
from northern colonies consume higher percentages of earthworms, refuse constitutes a more important source in the diet of chicks from western colonies. The three-isotope mixing model revealed
a heterogeneity in foraging habitats that would not have been apparent if only two stable isotopes had been analysed. Moreover,
our work highlights the potential of adding δ34S for distinguishing not only between terrestrial and marine prey, but also between different marine species such as fish,

Habituation to nonlethal predation stimuli may provide benefits for animals living in areas with frequent encounters with
low-risk predators. On the other hand, individuals can be very consistent in their antipredator responses, with shy individuals
showing greater degree of responsiveness than bold individuals. However, the link between habituation or boldness and individual
benefits has not been thoroughly investigated. We established whether and how two behavioral components associated with antipredator
responses (habituation and boldness, and their interaction) would influence body condition, which is a parameter related to
fitness. We conducted an outdoor semi-natural experiment with Iberian wall lizards (Podarcis hispanica). Individual boldness was consistent across contexts, but we did not find any effect of boldness or the interaction between
boldness and habituation on body condition. However, those individuals that habituated more readily to a frequent predatory
stimulus were able to increase their body condition more relative to lizards that habituated less. This finding highlights
the importance of individual differences in behavioral plasticity, which could influence traits related to fitness. Habituation
can provide benefits for individuals exposed to low-risk predators; however, individuals more prone to habituation could also
experience mortality costs by wrongly habituating to a dangerous predator. 相似文献

We examined how mating success varied in relation to age, weight, body size, and display behavior among great bustard Otis tarda males. The estimated mating success was strongly skewed, with 45% of adult males being involved in copulation attempts and
only 9.7% actually seen copulating successfully. Unlike most birds, body size continued increasing in great bustards several
years after reaching sexual maturity. Age, weight, and display effort were all significant and independent predictors of male
mating success. The higher display effort involved performing longer full-display bouts. Older males could detach from the
male flock earlier in the season as well as on each day and spend longer seasonal and daily periods displaying as solitary
birds, which contributed to increase their mating success. In contrast, males weighing more did not invest more in display,
which suggests that they could be recognized as dominants by other males and selected by females through assessment of their
plumage sexual traits. In contrast to most other bird species, the system described for great bustards resembles that found
in some lek-mating ungulates, where social rank is a complex trait determined by both age and mass, and as in these mammals,
it suggests that sexual selection continues to favor a high male weight in this extremely sexually dimorphic species. 相似文献

In Portugal, due to the combination of climatological and ecological factors, large wildfires are a constant threat and due
to their economic impact, a big policy issue. In order to organize efficient fire fighting capacity and resource management,
correct quantification of the risk of large wildfires are needed. In this paper, we quantify the regional risk of large wildfire
sizes, by fitting a Generalized Pareto distribution to excesses over a suitably chosen high threshold. Spatio-temporal variations
are introduced into the model through model parameters with suitably chosen link functions. The inference on these models

Traditionally it has been assumed by ecologists that the dispersion of positions with respect to leks of female capercaillies
during the mating season is superior to the dispersion of positions of male capercaillies. However some recently published
articles suggest the idea that dispersion is not sex-biased, but both sexes show a similar dispersion. This article introduces
a mathematical model to approach the study of the above question by means of an indexed dispersion criterion. This model is
developed in detail thus deriving its main mathematical properties. On this basis, the model is applied to the analysis of
the motivating problem with real data of positions of leks and female and male capercaillies. The results derived by means
of the model put into doubt the traditional assumption of a superior dispersion of females supporting the new theories, that

Phthalates are animal carcinogens and may cause death or tissue deformities. Samples of feedstuffs collected in 2005 and 2006
from industrial feed manufacturers in the Czech Republic were analysed for contamination with phthalic acid esters (PAEs),
specifically di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP). Samples of feed additives, premixes and raw materials were collected (year 2005, n = 26). For soybean oil, the total volume of phthalates measured (DBP + DEHP) reached a level of 131.42 mg kg−1; for rapeseed oil, fish meal and animal fats, the levels measured were 15.00, 7.96 and 58.87 mg kg−1, respectively. The lowest level of DBP + DEHP was found in corn (2.03 mg kg−1). Since phthalates were detected, samples of feed additives (n = 28) and raw materials (n = 28) were collected again in 2006. The highest levels of DBP + DEHP were found in raw materials containing fat. Phthalate
levels in rapeseed oil samples ranged from 1.38 to 32.40 mg kg−1 DBP + DEHP. For feed additives, contamination levels in vitamins and amino acids ranged from 0.06 to 3.15 and 1.76 to 4.52 mg kg−1 DBP + DEHP, respectively. Here, we show that the levels of PAEs found in cereals such as wheat, barley and corn may be regarded

The key objective of this paper is the presentation of a new risk assessment tool for underground coal mines based on a simplified semi-quantitative estimation and assessment method.In order to determine the risk of explosion of any work process or activity in underground coal mines it is necessary to assess the risk. The proposed method is based on a Risk Index obtained as a product of three factors: frequency of each individual scenario Pucm, associated severity consequences Cucm and exposure time to explosive atmospheres Eucm. The influence of exposure time is usually not taken into account up to now. Moreover, the exposure to explosive atmospheres may affect factors of hazardous event probability as much as its consequences. There are many definitions of exposure to explosive atmospheres but in the case of underground coal mines the exposure is defined as frequency risk of firedamp and coal dust. Venom-injecting structures have arisen independently in unrelated arthropods including scorpions, spiders, centipedes, larval owlflies and antlions, and Hymenoptera (wasps, ants, and bees). Most arthropods use venom primarily as an offensive weapon to subdue prey, and only secondarily in defense against enemies. Venom is injected by biting with fangs or stinging with a specialized hypodermic structure used exclusively for the delivery of venom (usually modified terminal abdominal segments). A true sting apparatus, previously known only in scorpions and aculeate wasps, is now known in a third group. We here report the first known case of a cerambycid beetle using its antennae to inject a secretion that causes cutaneous and subcutaneous inflammation in humans. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the terminal antennal segment of Onychocerus albitarsis (Pascoe) has two pores opening into channels leading to the tip through which the secretion is delivered. This is a novel case of convergent evolution: The delivery system is almost identical to that found in the stinger of a deadly buthid scorpion. 相似文献

Flower colour is an important signal used by flowering plants to attract pollinators. Many anthophilous insects have an innate colour preference that is displayed during their first foraging bouts and which could help them locate their first nectar reward. Nevertheless, learning capabilities allow insects to switch their colour preferences with experience and thus, to track variation in floral nectar availability. Manduca sexta, a crepuscular hawkmoth widely studied as a model system for sensory physiology and behaviour, visits mostly white, night-blooming flowers lacking UV reflectance throughout its range in the Americas. Nevertheless, the spectral sensitivity of the feeding behaviour of naïve moths shows a narrow peak around 450 nm wavelengths, suggesting an innate preference for the colour blue. Under more natural conditions (i.e. broader wavelength reflectance) than in previous studies, we used dual choice experiments with blue- and white-coloured feeders to investigate the innate preference of naïve moths and trained different groups to each colour to evaluate their learning capabilities. We confirmed the innate preference of M. sexta for blue and found that these moths were able to switch colour preferences after training experience. These results unequivocally demonstrate that M. sexta moths innately prefer blue when presented against white flower models and offer novel experimental evidence supporting the hypothesis that learning capabilities could be involved in their foraging preferences, including their widely observed attraction to white flowers in nature. 相似文献
