Uranium and plutonium isotopes were measured in soils, sediments and waters in an area subject to the past and present discharges from the uranium conversion plant of Malvési (France). The isotopes (236)U and (239)Pu are well known activation products of uranium and they prove to be powerful tracers of spent fuel releases in soils and sediments. On the other hand (234)U and (238)U activities measured in waters can be used to distinguish between releases and background uranium sources. Such findings contribute to improve the monitoring of the actinides releases by nuclear fuel facilities (mining sites, conversion, enrichment and fuel plants, reprocessing plants). 相似文献

It has been suggested that differences in body size between consumer and resource species may have important implications for interaction strengths, population dynamics, and eventually food web structure, function, and evolution. Still, the general distribution of consumer-'resource body-size ratios in real ecosystems, and whether they vary systematically among habitats or broad taxonomic groups, is poorly understood. Using a unique global database on consumer and resource body sizes, we show that the mean body-size ratios of aquatic herbivorous and detritivorous consumers are several orders of magnitude larger than those of carnivorous predators. Carnivorous predator-prey body-size ratios vary across different habitats and predator and prey types (invertebrates, ectotherm, and endotherm vertebrates). Predator-prey body-size ratios are on average significantly higher (1) in freshwater habitats than in marine or terrestrial habitats, (2) for vertebrate than for invertebrate predators, and (3) for invertebrate than for ectotherm vertebrate prey. If recent studies that relate body-size ratios to interaction strengths are general, our results suggest that mean consumer-resource interaction strengths may vary systematically across different habitat categories and consumer types. 相似文献

Today, a significant environmental problem is due to the presence of industrial landfills, some of them old, which can release toxic compounds into the environment (Chemosphere 42 (2001) 415; Chemosphere 31 (1995) 3455). The identification of directly linked to the leachate tracers of contamination in the wells around the landfills, as early markers of a potential risk for the environment and/or man, is a good strategy for an early evaluation of contamination. Our protocol developed for wells water characterization is based on solid phase extraction combined with GC-MS and HPLC-MS/MS.In this way a list of organic contaminants of a specific industrial landfill is obtained, giving a solid basis also for the risk assessment. In this study, biofiltration using a natural wood chip medium and a commercial biofiltration medium was evaluated for the removal of moderate concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) (up to 100 parts per million by volume [ppmv]) in the presence of significant concentrations of ammonia (NH3). These levels were chosen as representative of wastewater lift station emissions in the Brownsville, TX, area. NH3-removing portions of the biofilms may compete with H2S-removing portions and inhibit H2S removal. H2S process removal efficiencies for the commercial and natural media ranged from 90 to 96% depending on inlet loading and media type and bed height. Kinetic analysis of the H2S removal process followed apparent first-order reaction behavior. The average first-order reaction rates were 0.03 sec(-1) for the commercial medium and 0.09 sec(-1) for the natural medium. Pressure drops across the columns ranged from 0.41 in. H2O/ft for the commercial medium to 1.41 in. H2O/ft for the natural medium. NH3 gas levels of up to 80 ppmv did not affect the H2S removal process efficiency, and calculated kinetic rate constants for H2S removal remained almost the same. The NH3 gas also was removed simultaneously with the H2S up to 98% removal efficiency by the commercial medium. 相似文献

It is well-known that heavy metals brought by intensive pig slurry applications accumulate in the soil; because of their potential impact on the environment, studying their behaviour is of utmost interest. The Solepur process has been developed in Brittany (France) where pig farming causes serious environmental problems; it enables the soil to be used as a treatment medium to process pig slurry. Numerous pig slurry applications were performed from 1991 to 1995 on an experimental hydrologically-isolated field specially equipped to recover all the leachate. These applications approximately corresponded to the amount which might have been spread over one century. The Solepur process can be considered as a simulation model for what happens to metals in pig slurry under normal field conditions over a long period of time. This work measured the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, Fe and Cd in pig slurry, in soil and in drainage water, and the results are discussed. Total concentrations and speciation data within the three different compartments were analysed and showed that Cu and Zn accumulate in the surface layer, whereas other metals, such as Mn and Co, dissolve and are washed away in the leachate. The increase in the bioavailability and toxicity of these metals as well as their impact on the environment are discussed. 相似文献

Folic acid (5 mg) was given daily, for not less than one menstrual period before conception and until the tenth week of pregnancy, to 81 women (FS) with a history of a previous neural tube defect (NTD) birth. There was no NTD recurrence among this group or among the offspring of a further 20 women (PS) whose folic acid supplementation fell short of the full regime. In another 114 women who became pregnant without folic acid supplementation (US), there were four NTD recurrences (3.5 per cent). Our results suggest that folic acid supplementation might be an effective method of primary prevention of neural tube defects. 相似文献

Selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR) occurs in 10 to 15% of monochorionic (MC) twins, and it is associated with a substantial increase in perinatal mortality and morbidity. Clinical evolution is largely influenced by the existence of intertwin placental anastomoses: pregnancies with similar degrees of fetal weight discordance are associated with remarkable differences in clinical behavior and outcome. We have proposed a classification of sIUGR into three types according to umbilical artery (UA) Doppler findings (I-normal, II-absent/reverse end-diastolic flow, III-intermittent absent/reverse end-diastolic flow), which correlates with distinct clinical behavior, placental features and may assist in counseling and management. In terms of prognosis, sIUGR can roughly be divided in two groups: type I cases, with a fairly good outcome, and types II and III, with a substantial risk for a poor outcome. Management of types II and III may consist in expectant management until deterioration of the IUGR fetus is observed, with the option of cord occlusion if this occurs before viability. Alternatively, active management can be considered electively, including cord occlusion or laser coagulation. Both therapies seem to increase the chances of intact survival of the larger fetus, while they entail, or increase the chances of, intrauterine demise of the IUGR fetus.
