Freshwater leeches (Hirudinea) as a screening tool for detecting organic contaminants in the environment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In earlier work, we found that leeches from an industrially polluted creek bioaccumulated chlorophenols to much higher concentrations than other resident benthic invertebrates and fish. We suggested that leeches may have significant potential as biomonitors for these and other organic contaminants in the environment. In this study, we compared the bioaccumulation and depuration of 16 organic compounds, including eight chlorophenols (CPs), lindane, DDT and four derivatives, benzothiazole (BT) and 2-(Methylthio)benzothiazole (MMBT) for three species of leeches. Dina dubia had the highest bioaccumulation capacity for most contaminants, but residues persisted longest in Erpobdella punctata. Helobdella stagnalis appeared capable of degrading some compounds. Half lives of CPs, DDT and DDT derivatives were generally longer than one month. In contrast, half lives were only 1 day for lindane, 1–2.5 days for MMBT and 7 days for BT despite very high initial tissue concentrations of the latter two compounds. Bioconcentration factors for contaminants in leeches were higher than those reported for other aquatic organisms. Half lives for lindane, DDT and DDT derivatives were consistent with the literature for other organisms, but half lives for CPs were much longer. The results suggest that leeches would be excellent biomonitors of both continuous and intermittent contamination of a waterway with CPs and DDT, as they retain these compounds for long periods after exposure. This article presents a database developed to determine the potential reuse of contaminated sites for primarily ecologically and culturally based activities. The database consists of 172 quantitative and qualitative measures of on‐site land suitability, ecological, cultural, and recreational value, and off‐site suitability, economic, and demographic information. Using sites owned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as a case study, the article evaluates the quality of available data and suggests ways of using it for planning ecologically sensitive remediation activities and future land use. This type of database can be developed and used by anyone who needs to select, review, or evaluate site remediation and future land use options. Desert winter annual plants: Camissonia claviformis, C. hirtella, Caulanthus cooperi, Chaneactis carphoclinia, C. stevioides, Cryptantha angustifolia, C. pterocarya, Erodium cicutarium, Festuca octoflora, Lupinus concinnus, Oenothera californica, Plantago insularis, Platystemon californica, Salvia columbariae, Thelypodium lasiophyllum, and Thysanocarpus curvipes growing on irrigated and non-irrigated plots were exposed in situ to elevated levels of ozone dispensed from an open air exposure system. Plants were exposed intermittently to a gradient of ozone of concentrations ranging between 44 and 133 ppb (nL L?1) for 35 h over a total of 216 h. Only three species were injured by ozone at the highest ozone concentrations. Leaf injury to C. claviformis—2 percent total foliar injury (TFI), C. hirtella—1 percent TFI, and Erodium cicutarium—2 percent TFI, developed at the highest ozone concentrations. Leaf injury to these species was similar on the irrigated and nonirrigated plots. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance significantly decreased in C. claviformis, and C. hirtella due to water stress but not ozone. Similar trend for net photosynthesis was also determined. The highest water potential and stomatal conductance values as well as the largest differences in water potential between irrigated and non-irrigated plants were found in the morning. 相似文献

Paraeuchaeta norvegica (8.5 mm total length) and yolk-sac stage Atlantic cod larvae (4 mm total length) (Gadus morhua) larvae were observed in aquaria (3 l of water) using silhouette video photography. This allowed direct observations (and
quantitative measurement) of predator–prey interactions between these two species in 3-dimensions. Tail beats, used by cod
larvae to propel themselves through the viscous fluid environment, also generate signals detectable by mechanoreceptive copepod
predators. When the prey is close enough for detection and successful capture (approximately half a body-length), the copepod
launches an extremely rapid high Reynolds number attack, grabbing the larva around its midsection. While capture itself takes
place in milliseconds, minutes are required to subdue and completely ingest a cod larva. The behavioural observations are
used to estimate the hydrodynamic signal strength of the cod larva’s tail beats and the copepod’s perceptive field for larval
fish prey. Cod larvae are more sensitive to fluid velocity than P. norvegica and also appear capable of distinguishing between the signal generated by a swimming and an attacking copepod. However, the
copepod can lunge at much faster velocities than a yolk-sac cod larva can escape, leading to the larva’s capture. These observations
can serve as input to the predator–prey component of ecosystem models intended to assess the impact of P. norvegica on cod larvae. 相似文献
