Most wood-feeding insects need an association with microbes to utilize wood as food, and some have special organs to store and convey the microbes. We report here the discovery of the microbe-storage organ (mycangium) in stag beetles (Coleoptera: Lucanidae), which develop in decayed wood. The mycangium, which was discovered in the abdomen, is present in all adult females of 22 lucanid species examined in this study, but absent in adult males. By contrast, adult insects of both sexes of selected Passalidae, Geotrupidae, and Scarabaeidae, which are related to Lucanidae, lacked mycangia similar to those of the lucanid species. Yeast-like microbes were isolated from the mycangium of five lucanid species. DNA sequence analyses indicate that the microbes are closely related to the xylose-fermenting yeasts Pichia stipitis, Pichia segobiensis, or Pichia sp. known from the gut of a passalid species.  相似文献

A carbonyl sampler originally designed for the active sampling method (Sep-Pak XPoSure) was used for long-term passive sampling, and its applicability as a passive sampler was examined through field experiments. The uptake rates of passive sampling were determined experimentally from collocated passive and active samplings for various sampling periods. The obtained uptake rates of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone were 1.48, 1.23, and 1.08 mL/min, respectively. These uptake rates were consistent for a wide range of the sampling term (12 hr-2 weeks). Uptake rates of each carbonyl were proportional to the diffusion coefficients of each. Therefore, the ratios of diffusion coefficients were used to calculate the uptake rates of carbonyls for which the rates were not determined experimentally. Lower limits of determination were 2.16-17.5 microg/m3 for 2-week sampling. It was confirmed that 2-week monitoring of carbonyl concentrations up to 118-229 microg/m3 was possible. Relative standard deviations of the passive method generated from the repeatability test were 2-12.3% error for five samplings, and the recovery efficiencies were larger than 90%. Thus, the passive sampler was found to be highly suitable for long-term monitoring of carbonyl compounds.  相似文献

The monthly concentrations of NO2, NOx, SO2 and O3 measured by a passive sampler from February 2003 to January 2004 showed that the air pollution during the winter season in Kathmandu valley was higher than the summer season. The O3 level was found the highest during April, May and June due to strong radiation. The hourly concentrations of NO2, NOx, O3 and suspended particulate matter(SPM) were also measured by automatic instruments on December 2003. Temperature at the height of 60 m and 400 m at Raniban Mountain in the northwest of Kathmandu valley was measured on February 2001 in the winter season and the average potential temperature gradient was estimated from observed temperature. Wind speed was also measured at the department of hydrology, airport section, from 18 February to 6 March 2001. It was found that the stable layer and the calm condition in the atmosphere strongly affected the appearance of the maximum concentrations of NO2 and SPM in the morning, and that the unstable layer and the windy condition in the atmosphere was considerably relevant to the decrease of air pollution concentrations at daytime. The emission amounts of NOx, HCs and total suspended particle(TSP) from transport sector in 2003 were estimated from the increasing rate of vehicles on the basis of the emission amounts in 1993 to be 3751 t/a, 30570 t/a and 1317 t/a, respectively. The diurnal concentrations in 2003 calculated by the two-layers box model reproduced the characteristics of air pollution in Kathmandu valley such as the maximum value of O3 and its time, the maximum value of NO in the morning, and the decrease of NO and NO2 at daytime. The comparison with the concentrations in 1993 calculated suggested that the main cause of air pollution was the emission from transport sector.  相似文献

This study analyzes Total Factor Productivity (TFP), which includes all categories of productivity. Our measure investigates productivity in the context of the provision and dissemination of environmental information policies. We investigated data on the emission of toxic chemical substances for the U.S. and Japanese manufacturing firms, including 386 firms for the period 1999-2007 and 466 firms for the period 2001-2008. The results show that productivity improved in all nine industrial sectors and that pollution levels were high in the U.S. and Japan from 2001 to 2007. In particular, the electronics industry improved rapidly after 2002 in both countries, which may be attributed to the enforcement of RoHS and the REACH directive in Europe. As a result of these stringent policies on toxic chemical emissions, the U.S. and Japanese firms, many of which export to the European market, have strong incentives to reduce their toxic chemical emissions.  相似文献

A simple and rapid method for the extraction and cleanup of dioxins from house dust was developed using an accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) method and a multi-layer silica-gel cartridge. It was found that the WHO-TEQ levels of dioxins extracted from the house dust obtained by both a conventional soxhlet extraction and the ASE were almost equal, when the data obtained by both methods were compared. As for the cleanup method, a multi-layer silica-gel cartridge yielded higher dioxin recoveries than the alkaline digestion method. The average values of the dioxins in house dust from Kumagaya city and Sendai city in Japan (Sendai city is bigger than Kumagaya city with respect to the population and industry), were 15.6 pg TEQ/g (8.6-26.0 pg TEQ/g, n=5, Kumagaya city) and 16.0 pg TEQ/g (5.9-30.5 pg TEQ/g, n=5, Sendai city), respectively.  相似文献

Because of the remarkable chemical structure of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as well as the complex conditions of water, selecting an appropriate adsorbent for treating PFAS is critical. Adsorption needs to be environmentally friendly, low cost, and consider the types of adsorbents that work well in mixed PFAS solutions. In the present study, we used mixed PFAS to estimate the PFAS activity. This research aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of the adsorption of PFAS from water using different adsorbents: granular activated carbon (GAC), IRA 910 (strong anion resin), and DOWEX MB-50 (mixed exchange resin). Batch adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies were performed for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). Freundlich models consistently described the kinetic behavior with a high correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.98). PFAS adsorption capacities on GAC and IRA910 were dependent on the chain length (PFOS > PFOA > PFHxS). The adsorption capacity of DOWEX MB-50 decreased because of the sulfonate effects (PFOS > PFHxS > PFOA). The rate constants (k2) that represented the adsorption of PFAS on different adsorbents observed within 96 h were accurately determined by the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. GAC achieved followed the relationship k2(PFOS) > k2(PFOA) > k2(PFHxS). Furthermore, k2 of IRA910 decreased in the order of k2(PFOA) > k2(PFOS) > k2(PFHxS), implying that IRA910 promoted hydrophobicity more significantly on the adsorption of PFCAs than perfluoroalkane (-alkyl) sulfonic acids. The kinetics of DOWEX MB-50 revealed k2(PFHxS) > k2(PFOS) > k2(PFOA) because gel-type resins like DOWEX MB-50 are more suitable for shorter-chain PFAS. Further investigation is needed to determine the effect of organic matter under natural conditions and evaluate adsorptive selection caused by operational complexities.  相似文献

Recently, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) with high RAP contents with rejuvenator agents have been implemented in Japan. However, a unified view of the durability of RAP mixtures with rejuvenators has not been established. Therefore, this paper aims to assess the durability of RAP mixtures blended with different types of rejuvenators through combined aging, compared with that of hot mixed asphalt (HMA) mixture. Mechanical and physical properties of RAP mixtures with rejuvenators subjected to a combination of moisture, heat, and oxidation were investigated. Saturation aging tensile stiffness conditioning was used to simulate the combined aging. Four types of RAP mixtures were prepared by employing two types of oil-based rejuvenators with two RAP contents. HMA mixtures were also prepared. The test results demonstrated that the RAP mixtures did not exhibit a reduction in the retained stiffness, whereas the HMA mixtures exhibited a significant drop in stiffness with conditioning. In addition, the RAP mixtures exhibited a longer residual service life than the HMA mixtures after conditioning. Detailed analyses revealed differences in the stiffness and fatigue behaviors of the RAP mixtures with different types of rejuvenators. Finally, certain aspects of the deterioration mechanisms of RAP mixtures with rejuvenators were discussed.
