The high speed supernatant fraction of a homogenate of Squalus acanthias L. liver catalyses the oxidation of oleyl alcohol to oleic acid by an NAD-dependent process. Reduction of fatty acid to fatty alcohol could not be demonstrated. Liver lipids of S. acanthias contain about 60 and 40% of triglycerides and diacyl glyceryl ethers, respectively, with only traces of wax esters. Serum lipids contain 28, 15 and 26% of triglycerides, diacyl glyceryl ethers and wax esters, respectively. Cell-free fractions of S. acanthias liver catalyse the formation of wax esters by an ATP1-dependent process. The bulk of wax ester synthesis occurs in the high-speed supernatant fraction of liver. The rate of formation of the ester bond in wax esters is comparable to the rate of synthesis of ester bonds in triglycerides, and greatly exceeds the rate of formation of the ether bond in diacyl glyceryl ethers. Results are discussed in terms of possible factors controlling the levels of neutral lipids in S. acanthias.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organic pesticides (i.e., DDTs) were measured in long finned eels (Anguilla dieffenbachii) in 17 streams on the west coast of South Island, New Zealand. Very low levels of PCBs and low levels of ppDDE were found. The concentrations of PCBs and ppDDE were not correlated within sites indicating that different processes determined the levels of the two pollutants in New Zealand eels. The PCBs probably originate from atmospheric transport, ppDDE levels are determined by land use and are higher in agriculture areas. The low contamination level of these aquatic systems seems to be a function of a low input from both long and short-range transport as well as few local point sources. No correlation could be found between lipid content and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) concentration (as shown in previous studies) in the eels which could be explained by low and irregular intake of the pollutants.  相似文献

Preparations of Euchaeta norvegica catalyse the incorporation of (1-14C) hexadecanol, (9,10-3H2) oleic acid, (U-14C) glucose, (U-14C) alanine and (U-14C) aspartic acid into wax esters. Both the fatty alcohol and fatty acid moieties of the wax esters are labelled, indicating de novo biosynthesis. A limited interconversion of fatty acid and fatty alcohol has been demonstrated. Incorporation of glucose into wax esters is diminished by prior starving of E. norvegica; it is also reduced in the presence of ecdysterone. Formation of wax esters from glucose is inhibited by increased oxygen tensions, rotenone and dinitrophenol, and is relatively insensitive to decreased oxygen tensions and cyanide. The data are discussed with particular reference to the reasons why wax esters are biosynthesised by calanoids.  相似文献

Aufwuchs, procedurally defined as material accumulating on submerged surfaces, is being used increasingly to monitor trace element bioaccumulation in aquatic biota. Procedurally-defined aufwuchs is a complex mixture of biotic and abiotic components. Both biotic and abiotic components can be avid concentrators of trace elements. Consequently, bioaccumulation data generated from poorly-characterized, procedurally-defined aufwuchs may not accurately reflect accumulation by biota. Further, total concentrations of trace elements in procedurally-defined aufwuchs may not be indicative fo the amount of contaminant available for trophic transfer. Methods of minimizing abiotic component contribution to trace element accumulation and means of assessing the bioavailability of associated trace elements are discussed in this review.  相似文献

Detecting climate-induced patterns using wavelet analysis   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
One of the difficulties encountered in the detection of ecosystem responses to climate change is distinguishing climate-induced patterns from those created by other sources. For example, changes in the trend of stream discharge records over time may reflect a composite response of changes in the climate (i.e. precipitation and temperature), land-use (e.g. timber harvesting and grazing), and local basin characteristics. Methods which quantify and relate information of temporal and spatial patterns across scales are critical to assess climatically induced changes in the forest and stream ecosystems. A methodology utilizing wavelet analysis is introduced for the purpose of identifying and isolating inferred climatic components of the hydrologic record. Trends observed in stream discharge records from eastern Oregon, USA are identified and used to illustrate the utility of a new time series technique, wavelet analysis, as a complementary approach for discerning pattern. This methodology affords an informed procedure for choosing filter dimensions for the purpose of signal decomposition. The wavelet cross-covariance is applied to precipitation and discharge records to identify the climatic component in the discharge record. Reconstruction of these dominant frequencies is effected to isolate the climatic components. The discharge pattern shows two dominant scales of pattern coincident with the precipitation record. A 3-year half-period pattern is found to be correlated with the Southern Oscillation Index at the same frequency.  相似文献

Identifying the errors that frequently result in the occurrence of rail incidents and accidents can lead to the development of appropriate prevention and/or mitigation strategies. Nineteen rail safety investigation reports were reviewed and two error identification tools, the Human factors analysis and classification system (HFACS) and the Technique for the retrospective and predictive analysis of cognitive errors (TRACEr-rail version), used as the means of identifying and classifying train driver errors associated with rail accidents/incidents in Australia. We aimed to identify the similarities and differences between the techniques in their capacity to identify and classify errors and also to determine how consistently the tools are applied. The HFACS analysis indicated that slips of attention (i.e. ‘skilled based errors’) were the most common ‘unsafe acts’ committed by drivers. The TRACEr-rail analysis indicated that most ‘train driving errors’ were ‘violations’ while most ‘train stopping errors’ were ‘errors of perception’. Both tools identified the underlying factors with the largest impact on driver error to be decreased alertness and incorrect driver expectations/assumptions about upcoming information. Overall, both tools proved useful in categorising driver errors from existing investigation reports, however, each tool appeared to neglect some important and different factors associated with error occurrence. Both tools were found to possess only moderate inter-rater reliability. It is thus recommended that the tools be modified, or a new tool be developed, for complete and consistent error classification.  相似文献

Prior to the 1950's, manufactured gas was commerciallyproduced from the pyrolysis of coal, coke, and oil atfacilities that are termed manufactured gas plants (MGPs). The constituents of residual coal tar present on many MGPsites are an environmental health concern because of theirtoxicity and the possibility for their off-site migration viawater and air. Atmospheric concentrations of five volatileorganic compounds (VOCs, e.g., benzene), sixteen polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, e.g., naphthalene), and particulate matter less than 10 microns in aerodynamicdiameter (PM10) were measured at the site of a former MGP. Air samples were obtained before, during, and after excavationof subterranean coal tar at the site. The results of thisinvestigation indicate that subterranean coal tar was not aprimary source of VOCs and PAHs in the local atmosphere beforeor after remediation of the site. However, excavation,treatment, blending, and transfer of the coal tar duringremediation generated concentrations of selected aromatic andsemi-volatile organic compounds that were substantiallygreater than typical ambient levels. In addition, these datasuggest that blending and mixing of coal tars could lead toexceedance of the U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standardfor PM10, although additional research is required to fullyevaluate this possibility. Nuisance odors associated with thesite remediation were likely the result of naphthalene andpossibly isomers of xylene. Air pollutant concentrationsmeasured adjacent to the excavation area and at the siteperimeter during remediation activities were less than therelevant occupational and environmental exposure limits.  相似文献
