The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the use of the Dynamic Flowgraph Methodology (DFM) during the design and verification of programmable electronic safety-related systems. The safety system consists of hardware as well as software. This paper explains and demonstrates the use of DFM, and how DFM can be used to verify the hardware and application software design. DFM is used not only to analyze newly developed software but also to verify existing software. The outcome of the design verification of the safety system is used to define the necessary diagnostic capabilities that are essential to guarantee the correct functioning of the safety functions.  相似文献

As tropical regions are converted to agriculture, conservation of biodiversity will depend not only on the maintenance of protected forest areas, but also on the scope for conservation within the agricultural matrix in which they are embedded. Tree cover typically retained in agricultural landscapes in the neotropics may provide resources and habitats for animals, but little is known about the extent to which it contributes to conservation of animal species. Here, we explore the animal diversity associated with different forms of tree cover for birds, bats, butterflies, and dung beetles in a pastoral landscape in Nicaragua. We measured species richness and abundance of these four animal taxa in riparian and secondary forest, forest fallows, live fences, and pastures with high and low tree cover. We recorded over 20,000 individuals of 189 species including 14 endangered bird species. Mean abundance and species richness of birds and bats, but not dung beetles or butterflies, were significantly different among forms of tree cover. Species richness of bats and birds was positively correlated with tree species richness. While the greatest numbers of bird species were associated with riparian and secondary forest, forest fallows, and pastures with >15% tree cover, the greatest numbers of bat species were found in live fences and riparian forest. Species assemblages of all animal taxa were different among tree cover types, so that maintaining a diversity of forms of tree cover led to conservation of more animal species in the landscape as a whole. Overall, the findings indicate that retaining tree cover within agricultural landscapes can help conserve animal diversity, but that conservation efforts need to target forms of tree cover that conserve the taxa that are of interest locally. Preventing the degradation of remaining forest fragments is a priority, but encouraging farmers to maintain tree cover in pastures and along boundaries may also make an important contribution to animal conservation.  相似文献

The fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils may be affected by several environmental factors including the presence of co-contaminants. This study was conducted in order to assess the effect of metals on (i) the adsorption of 14C-phenanthrene in soils and (ii) its extractability and ability to form non-extractable residues. The first objective was accomplished using batch adsorption experiments with an uncontaminated agricultural soil spiked with the metals Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Adsorption of phenanthrene was significantly higher after the addition of the metals (Kf = 21.48 vs. 8.55) and the desorption less readily reversible when compared to the unspiked soil. The extractability of phenanthrene was assessed with incubation (4 months, laboratory conditions) and microlysimeter experiments (6 months, natural climatic conditions) on three soils spiked with metals. All the soils were labelled with 14C-phenanthrene. The amount of extractable phenanthrene residues was significantly higher when the metals had been added to the soils. Nevertheless, the quantity of non-extractable residues was non-significantly different between the spiked and unspiked soils. The mechanism leading to increased adsorption and extractability of phenanthrene in the presence of metals is still unknown. In perspective, it would be interesting to assess the bioavailability of PAHs in the presence of metals in further experiments.  相似文献

Water-soluble synthetic polymers are extensively used in cosmetics, detergents and paints. Many end up in wastewater and, later on, in wastewater-treatment plants. In order to gain an insight into their fate in such plants, fluorescence and radioactivity labelings were compared using a lab-scale reactor designed to mimic industrial conditions. Two fermentation media were considered, namely a mixture of E402 and E204 micro-organisms and an activated sludge collected from a water-treatment plant located in the south of France. A sample of low molar mass commercial poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was labeled by radioactivity with tritium and by coupling the 6-aminofluorescein fluorescent dye. Labeled PAA-containing sludges were allowed to ferment. To monitor the fate of the polymers, aliquots of the fermented mixtures were withdrawn at selected times and centrifuged. Liquid and solid phases were analyzed by scintigraphy or UV spectrometry, depending of the labeling techniques. Both techniques led to similar distributions, c.a. 75% in the supernatant and 25% in the solid phase. Distributions remained constant during the biological tests. There was no degradation of the commercial PAA after aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC), in agreement with literature. These features showed that fluorescence-labeling can be used instead of the complex and expensive radiolabeling. The validated fluorescence-based method was then applied to a linear poly(acrylic acid) synthesized by ATRP and labeled with 6-aminofluorescein. There was no significant difference between the commercial and the linear poly(acrylic acid)s. In contrast, a linear PAA with 5% of tert-butyl ester repeating units was predominantly found in the solid phase although adsorption or absorption by micro-organisms could not be demonstrated. The method based on fluorescence labeling should be applicable to other water soluble polymers provided that the dye remains attached to the polymer as it was the case for the studied poly(acrylic acid)s.  相似文献

This paper describes the use of the 10 foot Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl as a quantitative sampler of the micronektonic standing crop. The use of this gear without an opening-closing mechanism made it necessary to sample by means of oblique hauls. This study, which includes not less than 1500 hauls, is directed towards introducing some degree of uniformity in operating this device so that valid comparisons can be made between catches from oblique hauls made at similar depths, as well as oblique hauls made at different depths. It is emphasized that information must be obtained on the tow path using depth-time and depth-distance recorders simultaneously. As the maximum depth depends largely upon variations in towing speed, it is important to be able to control ship speed carefully. As net speed is a significant factor in avoidance and escapement, care should be taken to sample each layer in an identical manner. The procedure defined here mainly involves (a) modifications of the depressor; (b) application of the winch brake after all the cable has been paid out, during the time required for the trawl to attain maximum depth; (c) paying out and hauling in at high speed by the winch. Resulting hauls show a nearly oblique tow path. Sampling velocities of the net are the same for all water layers: slow during descent, fast during ascent. This allows valid comparisons to be made between a series of hauls. Nevertheless, future progress in quantitative sampling depends largely upon technical improvements, and the evolution of new devices and approaches.  相似文献

This paper deals with the efficiency and effects of addition of aluminium sulphate on soft water quality of a shallow eutrophic lake. Almost all the controlled variables improved with treatment, especially nutrient concentrations such as soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and transparency. However, aluminium sulphate was not added in sufficient quantity to reduce the total phosphorus content. SRP concentration was significantly reduced in the short term. Moreover, external loading of phosphorus was high and not taken into account by the in-lake treatments. Finally, resuspension of sediment (polymictic lake) removed the alum hydroxide layer on the sediment surface, which reduced treatment effectiveness. No significant pH decrease was noted following alum addition. According to bibliographical toxicological data, monomeric aluminium content does not show any toxic effect on aquatic fauna and flora. In spite of low SRP in the water column, the treatment did not prevent appearance of Microcystis sp. colony (> 10 colony per ml) approximately 30 days after alum application.  相似文献

● An approach for assessing the transport of benzene on the beach was proposed. ● The behavior of benzene in the subsurface of the beach was impacted by tide. ● Tidal amplitude influenced the travel speed and the benzene biodegradation. ● Hydraulic conductivity had the impact on plume residence time and biodegradation. ● Plume dispersed and concentration decreased due to high longitudinal dispersivity. The release and transport of benzene in coastal aquifers were investigated in the present study. Numerical simulations were implemented using the SEAM3D, coupled with GMS, to study the behavior of benzene in the subsurface of tidally influenced beaches. The transport and fate of the benzene plume were simulated, considering advection, dispersion, sorption, biodegradation, and dissolution on the beach. Different tide amplitudes, aquifer characteristics, and pollutant release locations were studied. It was found that the tide amplitude, hydraulic conductivity, and longitudinal dispersivity were the primary factors affecting the fate and transport of benzene. The tidal amplitude influenced the transport speed and percentage of biodegradation of benzene plume in the beach. A high tidal range reduced the spreading area and enhanced the rate of benzene biodegradation. Hydraulic conductivity had an impact on plume residence time and the percentage of contaminant biodegradation. Lower hydraulic conductivity induced longer residence time in each beach portion and a higher percentage of biodegradation on the beach. The plume dispersed and the concentration decreased due to high longitudinal dispersivity. The results can be used to support future risk assessment and management for the shorelines impacted by spill and leaking accidents. Modeling the heterogeneous beach aquifer subjected to tides can also be further explored in the future study.  相似文献

The saddle gall midge, Haplodiplosis marginata (von Roser) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), has undergone a resurgence recently as a pest of cereals in Belgium and other European countries. An effective monitoring tool of saddle gall midge flights is needed to understand the enigmatic population dynamics of this pest, and to design an integrated management strategy. Therefore, volatile compounds emitted by females (alkan-2-ols and alk-2-yl butanoates) were identified, and the chirality of the emitted esters was determined to be the R absolute configuration. In field-trapping experiments, racemic non-2-yl butanoate attracted substantial numbers of H. marginata males. Thus, this compound will be useful in baited traps for monitoring seasonal flight patterns, and improving integrated management of the saddle gall midge in agricultural systems.  相似文献
