{en} Over the past decades, much research has focused on understanding the critical factors for marine extinctions with the aim of preventing further species losses in the oceans. Although conservation and management strategies are enabling several species and populations to recover, others remain at low abundance levels or continue to decline. To understand these discrepancies, we used a published database on abundance trends of 137 populations of marine mammals worldwide and compiled data on 28 potentially critical factors for recovery. We then applied random forests and additive mixed models to determine which intrinsic and extrinsic factors are critical for the recovery of marine mammals. A mix of life‐history characteristics, ecological traits, phylogenetic relatedness, population size, geographic range, human impacts, and management efforts explained why populations recovered or not. Consistently, species with lower age at maturity and intermediate habitat area were more likely to recover, which is consistent with life‐history and ecological theory. Body size, trophic level, social interactions, dominant habitat, ocean basin, and habitat disturbance also explained some differences in recovery patterns. Overall, a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors were important for species’ recovery, pointing to cumulative effects. Summary The mating system of the brown hyaena (Hyaena brunnea) in the southern Kalahari is described. Most brown hyaenas live in small mixed sex groups of related individuals. Some subadults of both sexes leave their natal groups, the females presumably to seek a vacated territory, the males to become nomadic. This paper illustrates a landscape ecology approach for land trusts undertaking conservation at the watershed scale. A conservation plan was created for the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in the headwaters of Michigan's Manistee River Watershed (USA). Eight conservation drivers were devised to identify Conservation Focus Areas (CFAs) of highest ecological importance. The CFAs were ranked based on ecological importance, feasibility of protection and size. Parcels were ranked, totalling nearly 5000 ha, within the three highest-ranking CFAs in one key county. This approach is useful to land trusts trying to operationalize three distinct goals in conservation planning: to find areas of high ecological importance, to promote the landscape's spatial integrity and to delineate threats to ecological systems and processes. 相似文献

Modeling diffuse phosphorus (P) loss may indicate management strategies to minimize P loss from agricultural sources. An empirical model predicting flow-weighted phosphorus concentrations (MRP) was derived using data collected from 35 Irish river catchments. Monitoring records of riverine P and stream flow data were used to calculate MRP values averaged for the years 1991-1994. These data were modeled using land use, soil type, and soil P data. Soil type in catchments was described using soil survey classifications weighted according to their P desorption properties from laboratory results. Soil test P concentrations for the studied watersheds were obtained from a national database. Soil P levels were weighted based on the results of field experiments measuring P losses in overland flow from fields at different soil test P levels. The 35 catchments were statistically clustered into two populations (A and B) based on differences in soil type, specifically, soil hydrology. Catchments in Cluster A had predominantly poorly drained soils and comparatively higher MRP concentrations (0.03-0.17 mg L(-1)) than Cluster B areas (0.01-0.7 mg L(-1)) with mostly well-drained soils. Regression equations derived for A and B type catchments predicted MRP values with 68 and 62% of the variation explained in the models, respectively. Data extracted for the rest of the country were applied to the models to delineate areas at risk on a national scale. While the models were only moderately accurate they highlighted the influence of land management, specifically, high production grassland receiving high P inputs, in conjunction with the effect of soil type and soil hydrology on the transport of P to surface waters. 相似文献

Understanding how changes in volumetric water content (theta) affect bacterial adsorption could help reduce transport of pathogenic and indicator bacteria that may be present in infiltrating wastewater. Three flow regimes that simulated infiltration from a household septic system were evaluated: saturated, unsaturated with a constant volumetric water content theta (constant unsaturated flow), and unsaturated with cyclic changes in theta (variable unsaturated flow). Escherichia coli was suspended in artificial sewage (AS) and applied as step inputs to sand columns, with regular interruptions in input for variable unsaturated flow. A transport model was fit to the saturated and constant unsaturated flow breakthrough curves to determine retardation (R), the first-order filtration coefficient (mu), and the maximum outflow relative concentration (Cmax). The total cells transported as a fraction of input (tau) in all three flow regimes was calculated. Constant unsaturated flow resulted in a significantly lower Cmax (0.633) in comparison with saturated flow (0.803, P < or = 0.05), although unsaturated mu (0.0693 h(-1)) was not significantly different from saturated mu (0.0259 h(-1)). Constant unsaturated flow also resulted in a significantly smaller tau (0.617) than saturated (0.806) or variable unsaturated flow (0.734). In variable unsaturated flow, cell concentrations were out of phase with theta--as the column drained, cell concentrations in the outflow increased; and when a pulse of suspension was applied, cell concentrations decreased. Constant unsaturated flow is probably the best for removal of pathogenic bacteria because this regime resulted in lower maximum concentrations of E. coli and greater cell removal, in comparison with saturated and variable unsaturated flow. 相似文献

Analysis of the chemistry of calcified tissues has been suggested to be a source of useful information on the population structure and environmental history of fishes. We have investigated this approach as a means of determining the number of spawning areas and diversity of migration routes in the large pelagic scombrid, Thunnus maccoyii (southern bluefin tuna). Analysis was based on ontogenetic variation in the composition of sagittal otoliths, as measured using two probe microanalysers (wavelength dispersive electron probe microanalysis and proton-induced X-ray emission microanalysis), of 9 larvae collected on the single known spawning ground (NE Indian Ocean), of 29 juveniles caught at different points along the known migration routes (off western Australia, southern Australia, and South Africa), and of 14 adults caught in the high-seas fishery (off SE Australia). Fifteen elements were detected in T. maccoyii sagittae, but only six (Ca, Na, Sr, K, S, and Cl) were consistently present at concentrations above minimum detection limits. No attempt was made to measure the concentrations of C, N and O, which are assumed to also be present. Comparisons among different samples indicated that: (1) variation in the composition of the otolith primordium was unimodal and, generally, normally distributed; (2) this composition varied among specimens as a function of their size or, apparently, year-class; (3) individuals collected from widely separated locations did not differ clearly in the composition of the most recently deposited sections of their otoliths; and (4) all variation in the composition of adult otoliths was encompassed in the range of variation of juveniles collected along the major known migration route. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis of a single spawning area for T. maccoyii, but also indicate that the range of environmentally correlated variation in composition is too low to provide a robust test of the diversity of migration routes. It is not clear why this variation is so low, but we suspect that it reflects both the relative homogeneity of the pelagic environment and a weak effect of environmental factors on the concentration of elements present in otoliths at levels1 ppm. 相似文献
