A nationwide programme for the prevention of sickle cell (SS and SC) disorders was initiated in Cuba in 1983. Couples at risk were identified by screening pregnant women and the partners of those who carry an abnormal haemoglobin, followed by genetic counselling and the offer of prenatal diagnosis. Prenatal diagnosis was performed in one laboratory, which had carried out 1068 prenatal tests for Hb SS and SC disorders by the end of 1992. The centralization of the service has permitted rapid identification and resolution of problems. 相似文献
Concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined in macroalgae samples collected from the Turkish Coast of the Black Sea. Certain algae species were chosen among the green, brown and red algae species at Sile and Sinop sampling stations from 1998 to 2000. In general, as regards the influence of the collection sites on the whole metal accumulation, Sinop is considered to be more polluted than Sile. The concentrations of the heavy metals in Cystoseira barbata algae are compared with previous studies in the same stations. The results showed that all metal levels have gradually decreased during past years. At the same time, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pb levels in the present study are lower than in Bosphorus and Marmara Sea algae. However, Mn and Zn concentrations are higher than Bosphorus but lower than at Marmara. According to these findings the heavy metal pollution decreased in Turkish Coast of the Black Sea during the years investigated. 相似文献
Air samples were collected simultaneously at three urban sites in São Paulo City, Brazil, in winter, spring, summer and fall (in 2000 and 2001). Andersen PUF samplers were used for gas and particles sequential sampling. Samples were analyzed using HRGC/HRMS according to US EPA Method 8290. The greater metropolitan area of São Paulo is the largest industrialized region of Latin America and has a highly polluted atmosphere. Concentrations of dioxins and furans, which are well-known toxic chemicals, ranged from 1.14 pg m−3 to 13.8 pg m−3 (0.047 pg I-TEQ m−3 to 0.751 pg I-TEQ m−3). Principal component analysis showed that all the variables are highly correlated with one another except the 2,3,7,8-TCDD one. This is consistent with the similar concentration profiles observed for the tetra, penta, hexa, hepta and octa-homologous groups of the three sampling sites studied. At all sites, the most abundant compounds were the hepta and octa congeners. The 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF accounted for 37–46% of the total toxicity and the 2,3,7,8-TCDD accounted for 7–16%. Highest mass concentrations of PCDD/Fs were found in the site where there is influence of industrial activities and heavy vehicular traffic fueled by gasohol, diesel, and ethanol. 相似文献
To verify whether dyes emitted within the discharge of a dye processing plant were contributing to the mutagenicity repeatedly found in the Cristais River, Sao Paulo, Brazil, we chemically characterized the following mutagenic samples: the treated industrial effluent, raw and treated water, and the sludge produced by a Drinking Water Treatment Plant (DWTP) located approximately 6 km from the industrial discharge. Considering that 20% of the dyes used for coloring activities might be lost to wastewaters and knowing that several dyes have mutagenic activity, we decided to analyze the samples for the presence of dyes. Thin layer chromatographic analysis indicated the presence of three prevalent dyes in all samples, except for the drinking water. This combination of dyes corresponded to a commercial product used by the industry, and it tested positive in the Salmonella assay. The structures of the dye components were determined using proton magnetic resonance and mass spectrometric (MS) methods, and the dyes were tested for mutagenicity. The blue component was identified as the C.I. Disperse Blue 373, the violet as C.I. Disperse Violet 93, and the orange as C.I. Disperse Orange 37. The dyes showed mutagenic responses of 6300, 4600, and 280 revertants/microg for YG1041 with S9 respectively. A bioassay-directed fractionation/chemical analysis showed that the C.I. Disperse Blue 373 contributed 55% of the mutagenic activity of the DWTP sludge. We showed that these dyes contributed to the mutagenic activity found in the Cristais River environmental samples analyzed and are indirectly affecting the quality of the related drinking water. Therefore, we believe that this type of discharge should be more thoroughly characterized chemically and toxicologically. Additionally, human and ecological risks associated with the release of dye processing plant effluents should be more fully investigated, especially where the resultant water is taken for human consumption. 相似文献
Routine surveillance of a large geographic region for clusters of adverse health events, particularly cancers, often involves
small area health data, possibly controlling for exposure information. Many different methods have been proposed to test for
the presence of geographical clusters. Two of the most popular methods are the spatial scan method proposed by Kulldorff and
that using a fixed number of cases within scanning circles proposed by Besag and Newell. Although the second test is very
popular, it has some difficulties. While the scan test controls for the multiple testing problem, the Besag and Newell test
does not. Additionally, the latter method requires the setting of several tuning parameters whose values affect the test performance
and are subjectively chosen by the user. This creates a difficulty to make a fair comparison between the two methods and it
explains why there have been few formal studies evaluating their relative performances. In this paper, we modify the Besag
and Newell test allowing for the control of the error type I probability and compare its power with respect to that of the
spatial scan test. We used data sets from a publicly available simulated benchmark. We found that the two methods have similar
results, except for clusters located in sparsely populated regions, where the spatial scan method presented a better performance. 相似文献
The spatial distribution of genetic variability depends on the spatial patterns of clonal and sexual reproduction, gene flow,
genetic drift and natural selection. Species with restricted dispersal may exhibit genetic structuring within populations
with immediate neighbours being close relatives, and may show differentiation among populations. Genetic structuring of a
species may have important genetic, evolutionary and ecological consequences including distance-dependent mating success.
In this study we used microsatellite markers to show that clones of Zostera marina in a population in the Ria Formosa, Portugal, were aggregated and covered distances of up to 3–4 m. Clones within 4 m of
each other exhibited significant and positive coancestry values, reflecting the limited seed dispersal of this species. Hand-pollinations
between near (0–10.9 m), intermediate (11–32 m) and far (15 km) individuals resulted in similar levels of seed set, although
the near pollinations had higher, although not statistically significant, levels of seed abortion during maturation. Seeds
from intermediate-distance pollinations had a significantly higher proportion of seeds germinate and shorter germination time
than both the near and far seeds. Similarly, the average number of seedlings produced per pollination, used as an overall
estimate of fitness, was significantly greater for the intermediate distance when compared to both near and far pollinations.
These results suggest that the genetic structuring observed may result in both inbreeding and outbreeding depression, which
gives rise to an intermediate optimal outcrossing distance. 相似文献
Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate, through a systematic review of hospital-based studies, the proportion of road traffic injuries and fatalities in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
Methods: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines, we searched the following electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, Africa-Wide Information, Global Health, and Web of Science. Articles were eligible if they measured proportion of road traffic injuries (RTIs) in SSA by using hospital-based studies. In addition, a reference and citation analysis was conducted as well as a data quality assessment.
Results: Up to 2015, there were a total of 83 hospital-based epidemiologic studies, including 310,660 trauma patients and 99,751 RTI cases, in 13 SSA countries. The median proportion of RTIs among trauma patients was 32% (4 to 91%), of which the median proportion of death for the included articles was 5% (0.3 to 41%).
Conclusion: The number of studies evaluating RTI proportions and fatalities in SSA countries is increasing but without the exponential rise expected from World Health Organization calls for research during the Decade of Action for Road Traffic Injuries. Further research infrastructure including standardization of taxonomy, definitions, and data reporting measures, as well as funding, would allow for improved cross-country comparisons. 相似文献
The biology, population dynamics, and production of Tylos europaeus were studied in two sandy beaches of the western coast of Portugal. At both sites, reproduction occurred seasonally, from April to July, with only one new cohort produced per year. Regarding population dynamics, cohort-splitting events were detected in males at the beginning of the reproduction period (April/May), resulting in two groups with distinct growth rates (fast-growing vs slow-growing males). Different biological characteristics were consequently detected in these two groups, namely regarding body size, lifespan, and contribution to the reproductive effort. Lifespan was estimated as approximately 3 years, for females and fast-growing males, and 4 years for slow-growing males. Cohort-splitting among males appeared as a possible strategy to cope with the highly male-biased sex ratios observed, which could lead to a strong male-male competition for mating. T. europaeus appeared as an annual species, with a univoltine life-cycle (one generation per year), and iteroparous females reproducing twice during their lifespan. Average growth production (P) was estimated at 0.082 g.m–2.yr–1 AFDW (ash-free dry weight) and the average annual biomass () (standing stock) at 0.052 g.m–2, resulting in a P/ ratio of 1.58. These results produced baseline information for the construction of a population-dynamics model and highlighted the potential of this species as an environmental quality-assessment bioindicator on sandy shores.Communicated by S.A. Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of an organism to alter its developmental modes in response to changes in the environment. A major challenge, however, is to explore the existence of a stabilized "morphometric code", a morphological set of buffering rules used repeatedly by members of any species, regardless of environmental factors. Budding of polyps in reef-building corals, an accretive process of the asexual growth form, is thought to be a plastic developmental characteristic. However, we found that intra-tentacular polyp budding in the coral genus Favia from the Red Sea (6 colonies, 37 polyps during a period of 3 years) is not correlated with polyp size. It is initiated after reaching an allometric threshold ratio of two stereotypic, radially symmetrical morphometric landmarks, consisting of the surface area of the polyp and its perimeter. 相似文献
