Many factors are aggravating desertification and degradation of forests such as urbanization, droughts, exploitation of natural resources and climate change. The study aims at estimating and assessing the degradation of forests in arid and semi-arid regions. This task however is complicated since the impact of the degradation will be in different forms such as loss of wood, soil erosion and lost recreational areas. Nevertheless the dynamic impact of the degradation is increasing the complexity of analysis since forest once lost is a reduction of value for all subsequent years. This study is considering the value of damages over time and it is using the concept of three environmental valuation methods to estimate the whole impact of the degradation: the habitat equivalency analysis (HEA), the productivity method and the benefit transfer method. The methods were applied to specific values of forests, depending on the best applicability, and the results combined to an overall value loss. The costs are calculated based on the year 2014 with two time horizons: 30 and 100 years. To apply the valuation approach, Jordan as an arid and semi-arid country is chosen. The result shows that the annual costs of environmental degradation of Jordanian forest areas equal about 0.14% of GDP in 2013, proving the enormous value lost to forest degradation or deforestation. The valuation approach can be transferred to other arid or semi-arid areas and stimulate forest conservation activities to prevent further degradation and to save the forest ecosystem services for the future.  相似文献

The effectiveness of Fenton process in municipal landfill leachate treatment, as a pre- or post-treatment approach, has been demonstrated. However, no general recommendations of universal validity could be made in the term of optimized conditions affecting Fenton process. At the first stage of this study, collected leachate samples from Aradkooh site, Tehran, Iran, were investigated using one-factor-at-a-time method to find out optimum coagulation pH and flocculation time values. Subsequently, the obtained results in addition to data issued previously by the authors were employed to develop a predictive model of the true response surface, namely chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency. Finally, the main parameters of Fenton procedure, i.e. initial pH, [H(2)O(2)]/[Fe(2+)] molar ratio, Fe(2+) dosage, and coagulation pH were optimized taking advantage of the above-mentioned quadratic model. The derived second-order model included both significant linear and quadratic terms and seemed to be adequate in predicting responses (R(2)=0.9896 and prediction R(2)=0.6954). It was found that the interaction between initial pH and Fe(2+) dosage has a significant effect on COD removal. While, the optimal [H(2)O(2)]/[Fe(2+)] molar ratio was independent of ferrous ion dosage. The optimum conditions for the maximum COD removal of 50.76% for the parameters of initial pH, [H(2)O(2)]/[Fe(2+)] molar ratio, Fe(2+) dosage, and coagulation pH were found to be 5.8, 8.0, 22,500mg/L, and 8.7 respectively.  相似文献

Biodegradable nanocomposites comprising of biodegradable polymers and bioactive organically modified layered silicates commonly reveal extremely enhanced mechanical and various other properties when compared to those of virgin polymers. This work was undertaken with a view to preparation of polymer bionanocomposites consisting of biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and organo-nanoclay. Cloisite Na+ and ammonium salt of l-isoleucine amino acid was used for the preparation of the novel chiral organo-nanoclay via an intercalation reaction in an aqueous solution. PVA/organo-nanoclay bionanocomposites of various compositions were created through the solution intercalation method by ultrasound-assisted technique. The resulting novel materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV/vis spectroscopy were applied to test the properties of PVA bionanocomposites. TGA indicate that the thermal stability is enhanced distinctly, without a sacrifice in optical clarity. The improvement of thermal properties was attributed to the homogeneous and good dispersion of organo-nanoclay in polymeric matrix and the strong hydrogen bonding between O?CH groups of PVA and the oxygen atoms of silicate layers or carbonyl group as well as OH group of intercalated amino acid. The morphology of the organo-nanoclay and PVA bionanocomposites was examined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Uniform distribution of clay due to intimate interaction between clay and polymer appears to be the cause for improved properties.  相似文献

Pesticide residues in fruits and vegetable from Islamabad market, Pakistan were determined by GLC using Perkin Elmer Autosystem equipped with 63NECD and capillary column. Dimethoate was determined in the quantity of 0.032 mg kg-1 in apple, 0.110 mg kg-1 in banana, 0.004 mg kg-1 in brinjal, 1.80 mg kg-1 in cauliflower and 0.13 mg kg-1 in arvi, fenvalerate 0.010 mg kg-1 in apple and chlorpyrifos 0.004 mg kg-1 in brinjal. The importance of these pesticide residues with reference to human health is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Reservoir operation involves a complex set of human decisions depending upon hydrologic conditions in the supply network including watersheds, lakes, transfer tunnels, and rivers. Water releases from reservoirs are adjusted in an attempt to provide a balanced response to different demands. When a system involves more than one reservoir, computational burdens have been a major obstacle in incorporating uncertainties and variations in supply and demand. A new generation of stochastic dynamic programming was developed in the 1980s and 1990s to incorporate the forecast and demand uncertainties. The Bayesian Stochastic Dynamic Programming (BSDP) model and its extension, Demand Driven Stochastic Dynamic Programming (DDSP) model, are among those models. Recently, a Fuzzy Stochastic Dynamic Programming model (FSDP) also was developed for a single reservoir to model the errors associated with discretizing the variables using fuzzy set theory. In this study the DDSP and the FSDP models were extended and simplified for a complex system of Dez and Karoon reservoirs in the southwestern part of Iran. The simplified models are called Condensed Demand Driven Stochastic Programming (CDDSP) and Condensed Fuzzy Stochastic Dynamic Programming (CFSDP). The optimal operating policies developed by the CDDSP and the CFSDP models were simulated in a classical model and a fuzzy simulation model, respectively. The case study was used to demonstrate the advantages of implementing the proposed algorithm, and the results show the significant value of the proposed fuzzy based algorithm.  相似文献

The uptake of plutonium(VI) and uranium(VI) by lichen biomass was studied in the foliose lichen Parmotrema tinctorum to elucidate the migration behavior of Pu and U in the terrestrial environment. Pu and U uptake by P. tinctorum averaged 0.040+/-0.010 and 0.055+/-0.015 g gdry (-1), respectively, after 96 h incubation with 4.0 x 10(14) mol 1(-1) Pu solutions of pH 3, 4 and 5. SEM observations showed that the accumulated Pu is evenly distributed on the upper and lower surfaces of P. tinctorum, in contrast to U(VI), which accumulated in both cortical and medullary layers. UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that a fraction of Pu(VI) in the solution is reduced to Pu(V) by the organic substances released from P. tinctorum, and the accumulated Pu on the surface is reduced to Pu(IV), while U(VI) keeps the oxidation state of VI. Since the solubility of Pu(IV) hydroxides is very low, reduced Pu(VI) does not penetrate to the medullary layers, but is probably precipitated as Pu(IV) hydroxides on the cortical lichen surface. It is concluded that the uptake and reduction of Pu(VI) by lichens is important to determine the mobilization and oxidation states of Pu in the terrestrial environment.  相似文献

Chatter suppression in machining processes results in more material removal rate, high precision and surface quality. In this paper, two control strategies are developed to suppress chatter vibration in the turning process including a worn tool. In the first stage, a sinusoidal spindle speed variation around the mean speed is modulated to disturb the regenerative mechanism. The optimal amplitudes of the speed modulations are found based on a genetic algorithm such that the input energy to the turning process is minimized. In the second stage, to improve the response of the system which is associated with small ripples under the steady state condition, an adaptive controller is designed. In this stage, the provided external force (e.g., by a piezo-actuator) is the input variable. Results are provided for each control strategy. It is shown that if both control approaches are applied simultaneously, chatter vibration is suppressed in less time without any ripples at the steady state condition.  相似文献

This study investigates the influence of policy interests on resource sustainability. Information on ‘colonial interest’ of the British regime and the ‘commercial interest’ of the post-colonial regimes on forest land use of Bangladesh have been drawn on to show the interplay of interests on sustainability impacts. The findings show that both colonial and commercial interests have caused intensification of forest land use for production of economic crops like teak (Tectona grandis) and cash crops like tea (Camellia sinensis), cotton (Gossypium herbaceum and G. arboreum) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The ‘colonial interest’ has also initiated the dispute of ownership, rights and tenure of forest land and resources. The post-colonial regimes have utilized colonial legacy as the privilege for implementing ‘commercial interests’. In both the cases traditional interests of people were disregarded. As a result, peoples’ participation in forestry was discouraged and the sustainability of forest land use was impeded.  相似文献
