How have reforms fuelled the expansion of artisanal mining? Evidence from sub-Saharan Africa

This paper investigates whether and how World Bank mining sector reforms have fuelled the expansion of illegal artisanal mining activity in Sub-Saharan Africa. In doing so, the analysis examines three issues. First, the emerging correlation between reforms and poverty, mainly a result of increased unemployment caused by Structural Adjustment Programmes and concurrent privatisation of state-owned enterprises, is explored. Second, the possibility that reform of large-scale mining has decreased available land for peasant farming as well as legalised small-scale mining activity is discussed. Finally, the notion that the regularisation of informal mining activities has been an exceedingly bureaucratic procedure in Africa, therefore providing individuals with little incentive to operate within the legal domain, is examined. Faced with few employment prospects, a growing number of Africans are pursuing employment in the artisanal mining sector, a worrying prospect given its intimate association with environmental degradation and HIV/AIDS.     

Photocatalytic degradation of indole in UV/TiO2: optimization and modelling using the response surface methodology (RSM)

The aim of our research is to apply experimental design methodology to the optimization of photocatalytic degradation of indole present in wastewater. Heterogeneous photocatalysis for the oxidation of organic biorecalcitrant pollutants in water is an environmental promising method. We used the response surface methodology (RSM) for the modelization and optimization of the photodegradation of indole in the presence of titanium dioxide. The effect of indole concentration, UV intensity and stirring speed on the yield of indole degradation was determined. According to the mathematic optimization of the process, the optimum point when 100% of degradation is achieved is given by the following values: UV intensity = 250 W/m², stirring speed = 536.36 tr/min and initial indole concentration = 10.10 mg/l.

Abundant ketone isolated from oily Plakortis sponge demonstrates antifouling properties

Marine sponges of the Genus Plakortis are typically unfouled; they can have a distinctive pleasant smell and an oily surface. A significant quantity of fragrant oil was obtained from a Jamaican Plakortis sp. by cryo-trap. The oil was determined to be exclusively 2-decanone. The antifouling character of the oil was evaluated by its effects on surface attachment of a gram negative bacterial model using confocal fluorescence microscopy as well as its effects on the attachment of Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel). The ketone dramatically inhibited attachment of the bacteria and zebra mussels. The results suggest that the oil impacts establishment of related epifauna on the Plakortis sponge in nature. Although the aliphatic ketone alone is not a potential commercial alternative for antifouling coatings, incorporating the functionality into coating design should be considered in future studies.
