Measurements conducted on full-scale hazardous waste incinerators have occasionally shown a relationship between carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and emissions of toxic organic compounds. In this study, four mixtures of chlorinated C1 and C2 hydrocarbons were diluted in commercial-grade heptane and burned in a water-cooled turbulent flame reactor (TFR) under two different excess air levels. No correlation between CO and organic emissions could be discerned. Reasons for this lack of observable correlations are discussed in terms of combustion and chemical reaction kinetic theory.  相似文献

Confronted with shortages of low sulfur content residual fuel oil and, consequently, faced with the threat of social and economic upheaval, several air pollution control authorities in the Northeastern states were forced to relax hard-won air quality standards during the winter of 1972. The authorities did so by granting variances to their sulfur content standards for residual fuel oil. This paper examines the institutional characteristics of these variance policies from an economic incentive standpoint. After setting up desirable structural criteria for institutional design of such crisis policies, the authors examine the experience of the winter of 1972 and arrive at policy guidelines which recommend themselves for consideration in future periods of fuel oil shortages.  相似文献

The evolution of H2S and SO2 from hot blast furnace slags by reaction with H2O has been found to be dependent upon the presence of O2 or H2 in the reaction zone as well as on the temperature. H2 has been found to produce a small increase in H2S and a small decrease in SO2 emission, while O2 has been found to produce a very great inhibiting effect on H2S emission and only a small increase in SO2 emission. The total emission of sulfur bearing gases is much less when H2O + air is blown at the slag than when H2O + Ar is blown at the slag, particularly at 1200°C and above. These effects may be useful in attempts to design systems for slag quenching which will produce less pollution.  相似文献

This paper includes results from pilot plant studies and early field demonstration units and a discussion of the application of the limestone wet scrubbing process to a low sulfur syb-butuminous coal. This latter application required the development of a hybrid two stage scrubber to enable collection of the fine particulate matter as well as removal of a significant amount of the sulfur dioxide.  相似文献

The emphasis on participate control from industrial processes has been shifted recently towards fine particulates, having diameters less than 3 microns. There exists an urgent need for more scientific information of fine particle characterization.1,2 Coal and oil fired power plants are among the largest anthropogenic point sources of particulate matter.3 Limited knowledge is available on particle size distribution and trace metal composition in power plant emissions.4-7 The morphological properties of particle emissions have been largely neglected. Based on two comprehensive field studies conducted in California, background concentration (parts per trillion) of N2O (296.0 X 103), SF6 (0.16), CCI2F2 (180.8), CCI3F (103.8), CCI2FCCIF2 (16.3), CCI4 (114.2), CH3CI (952.9), CHCI3 (23.4), CH3I (2.4), CH3CCI3 (84.0), CCI2CCI2 (43.1), CHCICCI2 (14.5) and CH3Br (—) have been reported. These trace constituents were identified using retention data on eight GC columns, their electron attachment properties, and their EC thermal response. All but CHCICCI2 and CH3Br were measurable 100% of the time at both sites. Cryogenic procedures for SF6 ambient measurement were developed and successfully used. By an analysis of worldwide emissions of these trace constituents, their ambient levels, and their atmospheric lifetimes, it was possible to determine their origin (natural or anthropogenic). Our results indicate that 27% of organic chlorine contribution to the troposphere comes from fluorocarbons as opposed to a 73% contribution from the chloro-carbons. Further, the anthropogenic organic content in the troposphere was found to be about twice the natural content. Very high CHCI3 concentrations in onshore ocean waters were measured. Ambient data supporting the anthropogenic origin of CCI4 have been presented.  相似文献

A PM10 monitoring network was established throughout the South Coast Air Basin (SOCAB) in the greater Los Angeles region during the calendar year 1986. Annual average PM10 mass concentrations within the Los Angeles metropolitan area ranged from 47.0 µg m-3 along the coast to 87.4 µg m-3 at Rubldoux, the furthest inland monitoring station. Measurements made at San Nicolas Island suggest that regional background aerosol contributes between 28 to 44 percent of the PM10 aerosol at monitoring sites In the SOCAB over the long term average. Five major aerosol components (carbonaceous material, NO- 3, SO= 4, NH+ 4, and soil-related material) account for greater than 80 percent of the annual average PM10 mass at all on-land monitoring stations. Peak 24-h average mass concentrations of nearly 300 µg m-3 were observed at inland locations, with lower peak values (?130–150 µg m-3) measured along the coast. Peak-day aerosol composition was characterized by increased NO- 3 Ion and associated ammonium ion levels, as compared to the annual average. There appears to be only a weak dependence of PM10 mass concentration on season of the year. This lack of a pronounced seasonal dependence results from the complex and contradictory seasonal variations in the major chemical components (carbonaceous material, nitrate, sulfate, ammonium ion and crustal material). At most sites within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, PM10 mass concentrations exceeded both the annual and 24-h average federal and state of California PM10 regulatory standards.  相似文献

In isokinetic sampling from a gas stream it is usually assumed that the flow pattern upstream of the sampling probe is not affected by the presence of the probe. That some probes do seriously affect the gas streamlines is shown by velocity traverses taken with a hot wire anemometer under controlled flow conditions in a wind tunnel. The degree to v/hich the streamlines are affected depends on the wall thickness and taper of the nozzle, the stem diameter, as well as on the size and proximity of sampling accessories in the vicinity of the nozzle. For a probe to cause negligible disturbance under isokinetic conditions it should have a sharp-edged nozzle with little or no outside bevel, and the stem of the probe should be at least 11 stem diameters downstream from the nozzle inlet.  相似文献

A mass transfer approach is used in developing a practical mathematical model of gaseous pollutant uptake by leaves in which a series of resistances is summed across a concentration difference. The body of information presented in this paper is directed to plant pathologists or physiologists in the field of vegetal-pollutant effects and to people interested in the natural removal of air pollutants by vegetation. Correlations are given to calculate the aerodynamic and the stomatal resistances to uptake, while both a qualitative investigation and quantitative estimates are made of the mesophyllic resistance. The factors which control the aerodynamic resistance, ra, are leaf size and wind speed, while the leaf physiology is the determinant of the stomatal resistance, rs . It is noted that the chemical reaction rate and pollutant diffusivity in the mesophyll control the mesophyllic resistance, rm, though the overall gas phase mesophyllic resistance, Hrm, is strongly a function of pollutant solubility in water. Finally, the overall model is compared to earlier experimental work on vegetal uptake of SO2.  相似文献

For the past several years, EPA has been measuring particulate emissions from a variety of heavy-duty diesel engines through contracts with Southwest Research Institute. Particulate emissions samples have been collected using an exhaust splitter to divert a fraction of the engine exhaust into a standard dilution tunnel. A small fraction of the diluted exhaust from the tunnel is pulled through a filter from which particulate mass and, in some cases, organic content of the particulate is determined. This paper discusses the sampling system and gives particulate emission factors that have been computed from truck and bus fuel consumption data as well as average truck and bus speed data from New York and Los Angeles (freeway and nonfreeway usage). Average particulate emission test results (steady state tests) for 2-stroke engines were 4.74 g/kg fuel and for 4-stroke engines were 2.64 g/kg fuel. Using average particulate emissions results, a particulate emission factor range of 0.8 to 1.3 g/km was computed. Nationwide diesel particulate emissions were calculated to be 88,000 metric tons per year.  相似文献
