One hypothesis for the function of song repertoires is that males learn multiple song types so that they may share songs
with neighbors, allowing them to match during territorial interactions. In at least one song sparrow population, in Washington,
territorial males share a high proportion of song types with their neighbors and use these shared songs in matching. We recorded
song sparrows in Pennsylvania and quantified sharing of whole songs and song segments. We found that song sharing is an order
of magnitude less common in the Pennsylvania population. We found sharing of song segments to be significantly more common
than the sharing of whole songs in three of the five fields we examined, while we found no significant differences between
whole and partial song sharing in the remaining two fields. Finally, we found no evidence that sharing is greater between
birds in the same field compared to birds in different fields. Taken with the data from Washington song sparrows, these results
provide evidence for intraspecific geographic variation in the organization of song repertoires, and suggest that song sharing
has not been a strong selective force in the evolution of song repertoires in song sparrows as a species. Furthermore, Washington
and Pennsylvania song sparrows differ in how they learn song, in that Washington birds copy whole songs, while Pennsylvania
birds appear to copy and recombine song segments, as has been found in laboratory studies of song learning. Thus both song
learning and the function of song repertoires differ between populations of song sparrows. Such intraspecific geographic variation
offers a unique opportunity to explore the ecological and historical factors which have influenced the evolution of song.

Renewable energy production is expanding rapidly despite mostly unknown environmental effects on wildlife and habitats. We used genetic and stable isotope data collected from Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) killed at the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area (APWRA) in California in demographic models to test hypotheses about the geographic extent and demographic consequences of fatalities caused by renewable energy facilities. Geospatial analyses of δ2H values obtained from feathers showed that ≥25% of these APWRA‐killed eagles were recent immigrants to the population, most from long distances away (>100 km). Data from nuclear genes indicated this subset of immigrant eagles was genetically similar to birds identified as locals from the δ2H data. Demographic models implied that in the face of this mortality, the apparent stability of the local Golden Eagle population was maintained by continental‐scale immigration. These analyses demonstrate that ecosystem management decisions concerning the effects of local‐scale renewable energy can have continental‐scale consequences. 相似文献

The transportation sector constitutes the major end-use market for aluminium-containing products and expectations for the future do indicate that aluminium will increase at 140 kg per vehicle. Moreover, up to 75 % aluminium recycled in Europe is used in transportation: thus, metal scrap recovered from ELVs is a key lever to act for closing material cycles. However, although the management chain of ELVs has an established procedure and aluminium scrap is usually recovered in shredding plants, a considerable fraction of the metal particles ends up in the light fraction called car fluff and is then landfilled. In this study we investigated potential of enhancing the recovery of aluminium scrap from the light fluff treatment. With this goal, the quantity of aluminium embedded in the Italian transport sector in the last 62 years was estimated, and a campaign of characterization in size and shape distribution of aluminium particles in the light fluff output has been carried out. The results estimated up to about 560,000 tons of metal are potentially recoverable from the treatment of light fluff at current operating conditions, but relevant improvements may be achieve when size and shape distribution criteria are adopt to implement eddy currents separation for a quantitative metal recovery. 相似文献

A chemical characterisation of used batteries can give useful information to implement suitable recycling techniques and to estimate the flux of the different materials recovered. This work is aimed to provide quantitative data about the composition of mixed batteries (in particular, Ni–Cd, Ni-MH and Li-ion batteries) collected in a Northern Italian town in order to evaluate the feasibility of recovery processes applied to the selected material. The higher concentration of metals in the <3 mm fraction suggested that significant quantities of valuable elements could be recovered: in particular, for a kg of the <3 mm fraction deriving from disassembled batteries, about 390 g Ni and 330 g Cd can be recovered from Ni–Cd, 630 g Ni, 80 g Co from Ni-MH and 250 g Co, 110 g Ni, 120 g Cu from Li-ion ones. Leaching tests applied to the same fractions, to assess possible contaminant releases, resulted in low metal content in aqueous solutions (except for Al and Fe, the concentrations of all metals remained below 1 mg/kg). The detection and avoidance of parasitized males is a component of female mate choice. Here we show that female mice can distinguish between the odors of individual males infected with an ectoparasite, the murine louse, Polyplax serrata, and uninfected males. Female mice displayed aversive responses to, and avoided the odors of, parasitized males. A 15 min exposure to the urinary odors of infected males induced an endogenous opioid-peptide-mediated reduction in pain sensitivity or analgesia, while a brief 1 min exposure to the odors elicited a non-opioid-mediated analgesic response. These neuromodulatory mechanisms facilitate the expression of a variety of anxiety and stress associated responses of which pain inhibition is one component. Females further distinguished between novel and familiar infected males. Prior exposure to the odors of an infected males reduced the degree of analgesia expressed and the associated levels of anxiety and stress and their concomitant costs. In a Y-maze odor preference test females also displayed a marked overall preference for, and initial choice of, the odors of clean, uninfected males and an active discrimination against, and avoidance of, the odors of both familiar and novel infected males. These findings indicate that female mice can distinguish between males infected with an ectoparasite and clean uninfected males and display aversive and avoidance responses to infected males. They also show that females can discriminate between individual infected males and modulate their aversive responses to the odors of infected males on the basis of prior familiarity. This is likely part of the mechanisms whereby females can both reduce the transmission of ectoparasites, such as lice, to themselves and select for parasite-free males. 相似文献

both conditioned behavior and memory levels match reinforcement intensity after a switch, and this rapid matching occurs within

Pollutant fluxes from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators are of a certain concern, especially gaseous emissions from the stack, which constitute the major effluent from the plant. In this work, heavy metals in soil and vegetation sampled in different sites around the plant are compared with those found in the gaseous emissions from an incinerator: the suspected source and environmental matrices are observed together, in order to detect a possible relationship of cause and effect, using statistical methods. The incinerator examined, regarding dimension and technology, can be considered a typical Italian one. Heavy metal concentrations in soil and vegetation show a clear dependence on sampling year; similar behaviour can be found in emission fluxes referring to the same years. A dependence on the distance from the incinerator is also apparent. This study supplies a methodological approach that can be easily extended and applied to other suspected contamination sources. 相似文献

The Hawaiian hawksbill population has fewer than 20 females nesting per year; hence, there is a need to monitor this population closely and basic biological information on individual growth and age to maturity is critical. We present a skeletochronology analysis of Hawaiian hawksbills using humeri recovered from 30 dead stranded hawksbills, plus 10 dead hatchlings. Growth mark morphology shows readily distinguishable marks similar in appearance to other species, though some animals displayed more diffuse marks. Growth rates remained high (average 2.24–4.77 cm year?1) from 20 to 80 cm straight carapace length (SCL). Hawksbills larger than 80 cm SCL had average growth rates of 0.3 cm year?1. There were few adult turtles in the sample; however, results indicate hawksbills have faster growth rates than loggerhead or green turtles, with probable average age to maturity (at size 78.6 cm SCL) occurring between 17 and 22 years. 相似文献
