Biofouling and ensuing microbial mediated degradation of Bisphenol A polycarbonate was studied by immersing the samples in
sea water of Bay of Bengal (Chennai, India) for 3 months and also under controlled laboratory conditions with marine mixed
microbial consortia for 12 months. A 9% weight loss in the sample was observed after 1 year of incubation under in vitro laboratory
conditions. A 5% reduction in number average molecular weight and an additional oligomer with a molecular weight of 930 was
observed in the same sample. Contact angle decreased by 11% indicating an increase in the surface hydrophilicity. The specific
heat decreased by 44% and glass transition temperature decreased by 3 °C with respect to the control indicating chain scission.
Formation of new hydroxyl groups and cleavage of carbonate bonds in polycarbonate suggested biodegradation. About 9 μg mL−1 of Bisphenol A, a monomer of polycarbonate, as well as its oxidized products were detected in the supernatant. The nature
of degradation in field and in vitro was different. It was predominantly oxidation in the former and hydrolysis in the later
environment. A strain exhibiting hydrolase activity was isolated at the end of the 12 months from the in vitro mixed consortia
and was identified, based on biochemical and 16S rDNA tests, as Pseudomonas sp. BP2 (GenBank accession no. EU920674). 相似文献
The urban snowpack effectively acts as a collection device for atmospheric-deposited PAHs. When these PAHs are flushed out in a short time interval along with springtime snowmelt, these cause shockloading to receiving waters. In order to assess the PAH deposition and accumulation in urban snowpacks, a deposition survey of PAH for the winter months of 1991-92 from the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada was undertaken. The results of the survey are interpreted in view of prevailing meteorology and various emission sources in the study area. The relative PAH deposition levels (to BaP) are compared with relative source emission fingerprints to examine consistency in sampling and analysis. While analyzing the PAH samples using the ASTM (1987) method, the problem of concentration levels being below the detection level was encountered. The ASTM method for PAH analysis was modified to enhance the detection limit of the PAHs by concentrating the PAH extract to very low volumes, on the order of 200-300 microL. 相似文献

Photodegradation of alphacypermethrin ((RS)-alpha cyano-3-phenoxy benzyl (1RS) cis-3-(2,2,dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethyl cyclopropane carboxylate) was studied as a thin film on glass surface and on black and red soil surfaces. A number of photoproducts from glass surfaces have been isolated, characterized and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). However, only two of them viz. 3-phenoxy benzyl alcohol and [2,2-dichlorovinyl-3(2,2,dimethyl) cyclopropane carboxylate] could be identified from both the soil. Rate of photodegradation on glass and soil surface under UV and sunlight followed first order kinetics with significant correlation coefficients. The rate of photodegradation was greater on black than on red soil. 相似文献
Predictions of ecological models on female social relationships (van Schaik 1989) and their links with food distribution
and the potential competitive regime are used to analyze the feeding and spatial behavior, and resource density, size, distribution,
and quality in a forest population of Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus). In contrast to other populations, and assumptions on folivorous primates, the females of this population exhibit a linear
dominance hierarchy. The langurs concentrated their feeding on three key resources with a low density and clumped distribution.
Two out of the three key resources contained significantly higher levels of extractable protein and soluble sugar than other
food plants, indicating high spatial variability of food quality. Even the mature leaves of the most preferred food plant
were about twice as nutritious as those from other food plants. Group spread was small and only a single high-quality resource
was used at a time. Finally, even rich resources could accommodate only a subset of a group. These findings fit predictions
made for the prevalence of within-group contest competition. Given the observed food distribution and phytochemical heterogeneity
of mature foliage, even females of folivorous species should contest for food. The effect of female dominance rank on size
and composition of feeding parties also agrees with this prediction. A comparison with data from another forest population,
where female dominance relations are weakly developed, revealed a clear-cut difference in the use and abundance of resources.
It is argued that between-population differences in female social relationships within a species may be viewed as adaptive
responses to local habitat conditions.

The ability of herbicides to be adsorbed by the soil and sediment and their tendency to be desorbed are some of the most important factors affecting soil and water contamination. Therefore, a sorption study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption of cyhalofop-butyl, butyl (2R)-2-[4-(4-cyano-2-fluorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoate, in the sandy clay loam and clayey soils using a batch equilibrium method. The adsorption of cyhalofop-butyl was found positively related with the clay and organic carbon content. Freundlich constants (Kf) of cyhalofop-butyl in the clayey and sandy clay loam were found to be 13.39 and 2.21, respectively. Sorption coefficients (Koc) and distribution coefficients (Kd) were found to be 265.38 and 2,092.79, and 1.38 and 11.48, for sandy clay loam and clayey soils, respectively. The adsorption isotherm suggested a relatively higher affinity of cyhalofop-butyl to the adsorption sites at low equilibrium concentrations. The low value of the soil organic carbon partition coefficient (Koc) of cyhalofop-butyl in the sandy loam soil suggested its weaker adsorption in soil and thus increased its risk of mobility into water sources; hence, it should be used judiciously to prevent groundwater contamination 相似文献
Gaussian-based dispersion models are widely used to estimate local pollution levels. The accuracy of such models depends on
stability classification schemes as well as plume rise equations. A general plume dispersion model (GPDM) for a point source
emission, based on Gaussian plume dispersion equation, was developed. The program complex was developed using Java and Visual
basic tools. It has the flexibility of using five kinds of stability classification schemes, i.e., Lapse Rate, Pasquill–Gifford
(PG), Turner, σ–θ and Richardson number. It also has the option of using two types of plume rise formulations – Briggs and
Holland’s. The model, applicable for both rural and urban roughness conditions, uses meteorological and emission data as its
input parameters, and calculates concentrations of pollutant at the center of each cell in a predefined grid area with respect
to the given source location. Its performance was tested by comparing with 4-h average field data of continuous releases of
SO2 from Dadri thermal power plant (Uttar Pradesh, India). Results showed that the Turner scheme used with Holland’s equation
gives the best outcome having a degree of agreement (d) of 0.522. 相似文献
The varying traffic parameters such as traffic volume, speed, shape and size, and terrain roughness conditions play a vital
role on dispersion of pollutants in the near field of roadways. Simulation experiments were carried out in the Environmental
Wind Tunnel (EWT) to evaluate the traffic induced effects on vertical dispersion parameter (σz) for heterogeneous traffic conditions in the near field of roadways for evaluating the effect of variations in traffic volume,
terrain roughness condition and approaching wind direction. The model vehicle movement system was fabricated and made operational
in the EWT, which allowed the variation in traffic volume, speed and wind road inclination. Sixty-six hydrocarbon tracer experiments
were performed to evaluate σz in the near field of roadways for variable traffic volume, three terrain roughness conditions and two approaching wind directions
(i.e., 90° and 60°). The values of σz for heterogeneous traffic conditions were found to be higher for low roughness conditions in comparison to other two higher
roughness conditions for various traffic volumes and approaching wind directions.

Cellulose is naturally available most abundant biopolymer. Most of research has been focusing of extraction of cellulosic material from natural sources and waste sources. These waste sources are of two types: industrial waste and non-industrial wastes. However, industrial wastes are grabbing more interest as these could be available in enormous quantity, reduce environment pollution and also benefit commercially. To address this subject, in the present work, we have successfully converted the cellulosic wastes from viscose industry to high value materials such as Micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC) and Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). Furthermore, an important correlation between yield and crystallinity of produced NCC to molecular weight of cellulosic raw material was established. The above finding was characterized by different characterization techniques, such as Zeta sizer, Zeta potential and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
