There are numerous small populated islands near western Sumatra in Indonesia. The Weh, Banyak, Mentawai, and Enggano islands are home to many Indonesians. These small islands have been found to be effective at reducing tsunami wave energy on several occasions. At the same time, they are situated around Sumatras active subduction zone and are often among the areas most affected by tsunamisas in the case of Pulo Raya Island, in the western Aceh Jaya district about 800 m from Sumatra. Pulo Raya was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This study investigates the hydrodynamic processes of reflected tsunami waves and their impact on Pulo Raya, using a Cornell Multi-grid COupled Tsunami (COMCOT) model to simulate the tsunami wave runup and subsequent hydrodynamic processes. The simulation confirms eyewitness accounts that it was not the initial runup, but the reflected waves that devastated the worst-hit areas of the island. As a result, we can recommend that governments and communities on small islands need to anticipate the impacts of reflected waves following a tsunami, especially at lee side of of the island that was perceived to be a safer place by the island community before the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. 相似文献

Temporary streams are characterised by specific hydrological regimes, which influence ecosystem processes, groundwater and surface water interactions, sediment regime, nutrient delivery, water quality and ecological status. This paper presents a methodology to characterise and classify the regime of a temporary river in Southern Italy based on hydrological indicators (HIs) computed with long-term daily flow records. By using a principal component analysis (PCA), a set of non-redundant indices were identified describing the main characteristics of the hydrological regime in the study area. The indicators identified were the annual maximum 30- and 90-day mean (DH4 and DH5), the number of zero flow days (DL6), flow permanence (MF) and the 6-month seasonal predictability of dry periods (SD6). A methodology was also tested to estimate selected HIs in ungauged river reaches. Watershed characteristics such as catchment area, gauging station elevation, mean watershed slope, mean annual rainfall, land use, soil hydraulic conductivity and available water content were derived for each site. Selected indicators were then linked to the catchment characteristics using a regression analysis. Finally, MF and SD6 were used to classify the river reaches on the basis of their degree of intermittency. The methodology presented in this paper constitutes a useful tool for ecologists and water resource managers in the Water Framework Directive implementation process, which requires a characterisation of the hydrological regime and a ‘river type’ classification for all water bodies. 相似文献

Lithium is found in trace amounts in all soils. It is also found in plants and in nearly all the organs of the human body.
Low Li intake can cause behavioral defects. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the concentration and distribution
of water-soluble Li in soils of the Jordan Valley and its concentration in citrus trees and some important food crops in view
of the significant implications of Li for human health. The concentration of soluble Li was measured in 180 soil samples collected
at two depths (0–20 and 20–40 cm) whereas its content was determined in fully expanded leaves collected from citrus and different
vegetable crops. Concentrations of soluble Li in soils vary from 0.95 to 1.04 mg l−1 in topsoil and from 1.06 to 2.68 mg l−1 in subsoil, while Li concentration in leaves ranged from 2 to 27 mg kg−1 DM. Lithium concentrations in leaves of crops of the same family or different families vary with location in the valley;
i.e., they decreased from north to south. It is concluded that soluble Li in soils and the plant family did not solely affect
Li transfer in the food chain. In addition, soil EC, Ca, Mg, and Cl, which increased from north to south, might adversely
affect plant Li uptake. The current study also showed that consuming 250–300 g FW of spinach day−1 per person is recommended to provide consumers with their daily Li requirement necessary for significant health and societal

A Coastal Web Atlas (CWA) is a valuable resource for a range of users including coastal managers as it provides easy access
to maps, spatial data, coastal information and tools. A trans-Atlantic workshop on “Potentials and Limitations of Coastal
Web Atlases”, held in Ireland in July 2006, brought together atlas developers and coastal data experts from Europe and the
United States to examine state-of-the-art developments in CWAs and future needs. This paper focuses on workshop outcomes,
including what defines a CWA and an overview of international, national, state and regional atlas case studies from both sides
of the Atlantic. Results of discussions are presented concerning issues related to design, data, technology and institutional
capacity for existing CWAs based on the collective experience of workshop participants. Directions in CWA development and
applications since the workshop are also discussed. A major outcome of the workshop was the initiation of an International
Coastal Atlas Network. The insights provided give a framework for CWA developers and a useful point of reference for coastal
managers and policy makers on atlas potentials and limitations. 相似文献

From February to March 2005–2006, we surveyed wintering waterbirds to test effects of terracing on coastal pond use before
and after Hurricane Rita. Marsh terracing is intended to slow coastal marsh loss in the Chenier Plain by slowing marsh erosion
and encouraging vegetation expansion. Terraces also increase marsh edge in ponds, possibly benefiting waterbirds. We monitored
paired terraced and unterraced ponds in three sites within southwestern Louisiana’s Chenier Plain. Waterbirds were 75% more
numerous in terraced than unterraced ponds. Waterbird richness was similar among ponds when corrected for number of individuals,
suggesting terracing increased bird density but did not provide habitat unique from unterraced ponds. Birds were 93% more
numerous following Hurricane Rita, mostly due to an influx of migrating waterfowl. Year round residents were similar in number
before and after Hurricane Rita. Resident richness did not differ among years after correcting for number of observed individuals.
Wading and dabbling foragers were more abundant in terraced ponds and these two guilds represented 74% of birds observed.
We detected no difference among ponds for other guilds, i.e., probing, aerial, and diving foragers. Increasing proportion
of mash edge increased bird density disproportionately: On average ponds with 10% edge had 6 birds observed and ponds with
30% edge had 16 birds observed. Terraces increased habitat interspersion and were an effective tool for increasing numbers
of wintering waterfowl and wading birds. The extent to which terraces were sustainable following hurricane forces is unknown. 相似文献
