An isolated root uptake test (IRUT) was used to characterize the bioaccumulation of 14C-naphthol in excised root segments obtained from 6-month-old hydroponically grown plants: two varieties of fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb.) and one variety of clover (Trifolium pratense L.). Naphthol uptake rates were directly related to naphthol concentration in the range 0.01 to 0.2 uM. The incubation time required for equilibrium to be reached between naphthol in root tissue and in solution was between 9 and 12 h. Tests using metabolic inhibitors, KCN, NaN3, and DNP, indicated that naphthol uptake may be the result of both passive and active mechanisms. Recent attention has focused on resource management initiatives at the watershed scale with emphasis on collaborative, locally driven, and decentralized institutional arrangements. Existing literature on limited selections of well-established watershed-based organizations has provided valuable insights. The current research extends this focus by including a broad survey of watershed organizations from across the United States as a means to estimate a national portrait. Organizational characteristics include year of formation, membership size and composition, budget, guiding principles, and mechanisms of decision-making. These characteristics and the issue concerns of organizations are expected to vary with respect to location. Because this research focuses on organizations that are place based and stakeholder driven, the forces driving them are expected to differ across regions of the country. On this basis of location, we suggest basic elements for a regional assessment of watershed organizations to channel future research and to better approximate the organizational dynamics, issue concerns, and information needs unique to organizations across the country. At the broadest level, the identification of regional patterns or organizational similarities may facilitate the linkage among organizations to coordinate their actions at the much broader river basin or ecosystem scale. 相似文献

Performance rating research about individual performance may not necessarily generalize to rating performance of dyads. Using data from the 1992 Winter Olympics, this study demonstrates that observed interdimensional correlations are higher when dyads rather than individuals are being rated, particularly when raters have the opportunity to form prior general impressions of ratees. This study uses California data to compare redevelopment for properties subject to mandatory and voluntary cleanup. CalSites are subject to the CERCLA liability approach, while properties in the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) are subject to a risk-based approach (RBA) that allows some contamination to remain for non-residential redevelopment. The expectation is that VCPs will show a greater proportion of industrial redevelopment, which has the least stringent standard, and a smaller proportion of residential redevelopment. The results show an overall trend toward more residential redevelopment of contaminated properties, but consistent with expectations, the trend is weaker for VCP properties than CalSites. 相似文献

We present the first life history data for Oncothrips morrisi, a species in a clade of haplodiploid, Australian gall-inducing thrips that has a micropteran fighting morph in the first generation of the gall. Micropterans in other species in the clade have lower fecundity than their mother, and these species are considered eusocial. There is no such reproductive skew in O. morrisi, and the species is not eusocial by any definition. The volume of O. morrisi galls is between 4 and 20 times greater in than eusocial species in the clade and the dispersing-brood size varies between 5 and 15 times larger than that of other species. The lack of skew in O. morrisi could be associated with large gall volume, reducing competition between females for space and feeding sites for their offspring. As O. morrisi is in a lineage basal to eusocial Oncothrips, we also discuss selective factors for the evolution of a non-dispersing fighting morph in this clade. The costs involved in dispersal and latency to reproduction may have lowered the selective threshold for the evolution of a non-dispersing morph. Once non-dispersal evolved, selection to defend one's offspring may have promoted the evolution of soldier-like morphology and behaviour. 相似文献

Although the permissible emission limits for new motor vehicles are continuously being reduced year after year, the proportion of citizens in the Federal Republic of Germany who are affected by such traffic noise continues to remain practically constant. Thus, aside from the innovations in motor-vehicle technology, the question must be raised concerning what other possibilities are actually available for achieving a reduction in the emission of traffic noises. In the following, planning possibilities are presented for the traffic routes themselves and for their direct vicinities. An evaluation is also made concerning their efficiency. Climate change is a significant environmental, social and environmental problem that has been identified by scientists in
consensus internationally. The Australian Government’s response is considered by environmental non-government organisations
(NGOs) to be inadequate. NGOs are ‘change agents’ of society, and in this role they are agitating to influence political decision-making
on climate change response.
This paper outlines the campaign strategies being used by Australian NGOs to attract public and political attention to the
issue of climate change. Using seven NGOs as case studies, the archival materials of these organisations were accessed and
analysed. Current academic and other literature also was used to reflect on their effectiveness. Four campaign themes and,
within these, fifteen activities were identified.
The results indicate that the notion of whether NGOs are undertaking an ‘revolutionary’ or ‘incremental’ approach, or any
other narrow strategic approach put forward by various scholars is too simple for analysing campaigns: none of the NGOs appear
to intentionally favour one type of strategy. The question raised by this finding is whether the NGOs’ current ‘multi-strategic’
approach is effective. This research contributes to filling the information gap with regard to NGO campaign strategies on

Static bioassays of 96 h duration were conducted in the laboratory using fry of common carp (Cyprinus carpio), adult tubificid worm (Branchiura sowerbyi) and adult copepod plankton (Cyclops viridis) to determine LC50 values of Cu and CaO to these organisms and effects of interaction between Cu and CaO. Ninety-six hour LC(50) values of Cu to fry of common carp, worm and copepod were found to be 1.40 mgl(-1), 0.08 mgl(-1) and 0.03 mgl(-1) respectively. CaO up to 500 mgl(-1) did not produce any mortality of the fry of common carp up to 96 h. But 96 h LC50 values of CaO to worm and copepod were 83.00 mgl(-1) and 27.80 mgl(-1) respectively. When common carp fry, worm and the copepod were exposed to respective LC50 dose of Cu in presence of varying concentration of CaO, mortality of the organisms significantly reduced and was found inversely correlated with the doses of CaO [y = 48.36-0.807x, r = -0.99 (n = 7) for fish; y = 44.46-0.146x, r = -0.97 (n = 7) for worm; y = 49.46-0.66x, r = -0.99 (n = 7) for the copepod]. The present results indicate that CaO is non-toxic to fish and is capable of reducing the toxicity of Cu to fish while CaO and Cu are antagonistic to each other for the worm and the copepod. Potential of using CaO as antitoxic agent for Cu in water is discussed. 相似文献

Feeding behavior and acquisition of zooxanthellae by planula larvae of the sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Symbiotic associations between cnidarians and photosynthetic dinoflagellates (i.e., zooxanthellae) are common in the marine environment. Many symbiotic cnidarians produce offspring that are initially nonsymbiotic. These new hosts must acquire symbiotic algae from environmental sources. We examined zooxanthella acquisition by laboratory-reared planula larvae of the temperate sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima. Larvae ingested zooxanthellae while they were feeding. However, the signal that prompted larval feeding behavior did not originate from the symbiotic algae; the addition of algal cells to larval cultures never elicited a feeding response. In contrast, the addition of macerated animal tissue from several sources invariably generated a strong feeding response, which resulted in the larvae indiscriminately ingesting any particulate matter that was present, including zooxanthellae or other unicellular algae. Ingested zooxanthellae were incorporated into endodermal cells, where they remained undigested, while all other ingested material was digested or expelled within 24 h. Our results provide evidence that one source of zooxanthellae likely to serve as a route of infection in the natural environment is zooxanthella-laden mucus egested by anemones. This egested material fulfilled both of the criteria necessary for successful infection: it prompted larvae to begin feeding and provided an abundant supply of zooxanthellae that were ingested and taken up into endodermal cells of the new host. 相似文献
