Since the original formulation of the notion of safety climate, many people have developed safety climate measures and conducted factor analyses to identify distinct dimensions. Typically, these analyses were based on samples of workers in a limited number of workplaces, but since they did not allow for the non-independence of the data, they are incorrect. An appropriate analysis should use a multi-level method. This flaw in the analyses to date may at least partly explain the different factor structures of safety climate reported in the literature. 相似文献

Abstract Landfills represent a source of distributed emissions source over an irregular and heterogeneous surface. In the method termed “Other Test Method-10” (OTM-10), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a method to quantify emissions from such sources by the use of vertical radial plume mapping (VRPM) techniques combined with measurement of wind speed to determine the average emission flux per unit area per time from nonpoint sources. In such application, the VRPM is used as a tool to estimate the mass of the gas of interest crossing a vertical plane. This estimation is done by fitting the field-measured concentration spatial data to a Gaussian or some other distribution to define a plume crossing the vertical plane. When this technique is applied to landfill surfaces, the VRPM plane may be within the emitting source area itself. The objective of this study was to investigate uncertainties associated with using OTM-10 for landfills. The spatial variability of emission in the emitting domain can lead to uncertainties of –34 to 190% in the measured flux value when idealistic scenarios were simulated. The level of uncertainty might be higher when the number and locations of emitting sources are not known (typical field conditions). The level of uncertainty can be reduced by improving the layout of the VRPM plane in the field in accordance with an initial survey of the emission patterns. The change in wind direction during an OTM-10 testing setup can introduce an uncertainty of 20% of the measured flux value. This study also provides estimates of the area contributing to flux (ACF) to be used in conjunction with OTM-10 procedures. The estimate of ACF is a function of the atmospheric stability class and has an uncertainty of 10–30%. 相似文献

Abstract During the spring and summer of 2000, 2001, and 2002, gaseous and particulate matter (PM) fuel-based emission factors for ~150,000 low-tailpipe, individual vehicles in the Las Vegas, NV, area were measured via on-road remote sensing. For the gaseous pollutants (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide), a commercial vehicle emissions remote sensing system (VERSS) was used. The PM emissions were determined using a Lidar-based VERSS. Emission distributions and their shapes were analyzed and compared with previous studies. The large skewness of the distributions is evident for both gaseous pollutants and PM and has important implications for emission reduction policies, because the majority of emissions are attributed to a small fraction of vehicles. Results of this Las Vegas study and studies at other geographical locations were compared. The gaseous pollutants were found to be close to those measured by VERSS in other U.S. cities. The PM emission factors for spark ignition and diesel vehicles are in the range of previous tunnel and dynamometer studies. 相似文献

Thermally derived carbon fractions including organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) have been reported for the U.S. Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) network since 1987 and have been found useful in source apportionment studies and to evaluate quartz-fiber filter adsorption of organic vapors. The IMPROVE_A temperature protocol defines temperature plateaus for thermally derived carbon fractions of 140 degrees C for OC1, 280 degrees C for OC2, 480 degrees C for OC3, and 580 degrees C for OC4 in a helium (He) carrier gas and 580 degrees C for EC1, 740 degrees C for EC2, and 840 degrees C for EC3 in a 98% He/2% oxygen (O2) carrier gas. These temperatures differ from those used previously because new hardware used for the IMPROVE thermal/optical reflectance (IMPROVE_TOR) protocol better represents the sample temperature than did the old hardware. A newly developed temperature calibration method demonstrates that these temperatures better represent sample temperatures in the older units used to quantify IMPROVE carbon fractions from 1987 through 2004. Only the thermal fractions are affected by changes in temperature. The OC and EC by TOR are insensitive to the change in temperature protocol, and therefore the long-term consistency of the IMPROVE database is conserved. A method to detect small quantities of O2 in the pure He carrier gas shows that O2 levels above 100 ppmv also affect the comparability of thermal carbon fractions but have little effect on the IMPROVE_TOR split between OC and EC. 相似文献

Wild game management for hunting in Western society has become increasingly complex as stakeholders have multiplied and as ‘sustainability’ influences the contemporary debate. This paper questions whether the current legal framework for game management, which has evolved from early European civilisations to focus on ‘hunting rights’, is relevant to regulate the contemporary environmental, social and economic dimensions of wild game and their management. Employing a narrative analysis to focus on deer, the study identifies key legislative tenets and highlights the pertinence of historical laws to contemporary conflicts. The analysis suggests that current legislation is increasingly divergent from contemporary trends and has created inertia with respect to sustainable deer management. The paper offers four options to redress this: state intervention; voluntary collaboration; financial incentives; and establishing a legal responsibility for management. It is concluded that significant innovation is required in one or more of these four areas to facilitate the contemporary sustainable management of wild deer in Britain. 相似文献

Ambient air concentrations of fluorocarbon 11 (fluorotrichloromethane) and fluoro-carbon 12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) have been measured using a gas chro-matograph equipped with a pulsed, electron capture detector. Air samples taken on a moderately smoggy day in July 1970, at several locations near Los Angeles gave average readings of fluorocarbon 12, 0.7 ppb and fluorocarbon 11, 0.56 ppb. These readings were contrasted with those taken in early February 1973 when the air was clear and marked with turbulence due to several seasonal rain storms. The readings of both fluorocarbon 1 1 and 12 averaged about 25% less during clear weather than those taken during moderate smog. The effects of weather conditions on the concentration were also dramatically pointed out by the February samples, in that as much as a tenfold change in concentrations of both fluorocarbons from location to location and from day to day at the same location was observed. A concentration versus altitude study clearly revealed that fluorocarbons are trapped by an inversion layer. Examination of air samples taken in the vicinity of factories known to be users of fairly large quantities of fluorocarbons revealed in part how large users contribute to the atmospheric concentrations of fluorocarbons. A comparison of fluorocarbon levels in homes and public buildings with ambient outside air levels revealed that the concentrations in some homes and buildings may be as much as several thousand times as high as levels in outside air. Inside the homes and public buildings, levels were as high as one-half of a part per million. Long term photolysis studies in simulated sunlight of both fluorocarbons 11 and 12 in ambient air samples and in air samples with 1 ppm of hydrocarbon and 1 ppm of nitrogen oxides revealed that the two fluorocarbons are photochemically stable even when photolyzed for several weeks. 相似文献
