After almost two decades of decline, Ghana's mineral sector has rebounded significantly and is currently the main foreign exchange earner. Gold mining is the principal activity within the sector and accounted for 41 percent of total export earnings in 1996. This paper presents an overview of Ghana's mineral industry and covers mineral resources, production and reserves; mining investments; the role of mining in the economy; and the structure of the industry. An overview of the national mineral policy is also presented to depict the current regulatory and fiscal environment in which the industry operates. The spectacular reversal in mineral sector performance can be attributed to the adoption of World Bank recommendations in a new national mineral policy, the 1986 Minerals and Mining Law, aimed at revitalizing the sector. 相似文献

Ideal free distribution (IFD) models are perhaps the group of mathematical models of behavior that have been the most widely
and successfully applied by empiricists. These models can be applied to nearly any situation in which consumers compete—by
any mechanism—for resources that are patchily distributed in their environment. Although IFD models have come to be broadly
accepted, experiments that simultaneously test more than a single prediction are rare. Instead, investigators normally either
test (1) for a relationship between the distribution of consumers and the distribution of resources or (2) whether average
fitnesses are equal across resource patches. We conducted experiments with pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris) feeding on two patches of fava beans (Vicia faba L.) to fully independently parameterize an IFD model with interference competition and then test quantitative predictions
about aphid spatial distributions and the payoffs of patch choice. We found a precise fit between aphids’ predicted and observed
reproductive successes. Furthermore, by varying patch “quality” in two ways, we were able to show that aphid distributions
vary with the mode of resource variation in the predicted manner: aphids (1) matched resources when patches varied in size
but not quality and (2) overmatched the good patch when patches varied in quality but not size (predicted as a consequence
of weak interference). The close correspondence between quantitative predictions of the model with observed behaviors suggests
that IFD theory is a framework with more explanatory power than is generally appreciated. 相似文献

Baboons adjust secondary sex ratio in response to predictors of sex-specific offspring survival 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Most theories of sex ratio adjustment assume that parents will adjust the sex ratio of births (secondary sex ratio) in a manner that maximizes offspring reproductive success (as long as this does not jeopardize parental reproductive success). Survival to maturity is typically the largest component of variance in offspring reproductive success. This should make environmental predictors of sex-specific offspring survival strong predictors of secondary sex ratio adjustment. We tested this survivorship maximization hypothesis for secondary sex ratio adjustment using data from a 17-year demographic study of 315 yellow baboon infants at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania. Sex differences were found in the degree to which several social and ecological conditions affected infant survival to 1 year. Female, but not male, infant survival was inversely correlated with birth order and the proportion of infant females in their birth cohort. Male, but not female, infant survival was inversely correlated with the amount of rainfall early in the year (January) and the proportion of infant males in their birth cohort; male survival also was positively correlated with maternal dominance rank. The consistency and timing of these effects across years suggested that such information was, in fact, available to females around the time of conception. Most importantly, social and ecological conditions that predicted improved survivorship of a given sex also were positively correlated with production of that sex. Early births were female-biased; and low January rainfall was correlated with a male-biased sex ratio, becoming increasingly female-biased as January rainfall increased. However, no sex ratio effects were correlated with maternal rank. Data supported the hypothesis that females adjusted secondary sex ratio in a manner that maximized sex-specific infant survival. This hypothesis also offered a plausible explanation for some of the contradictory data that have arisen from studies of maternal rank effects on sex ratio both within and between species.Correspondence to: S. Ophiurid basket stars belonging to the family Gorgonocephalidae are distributed from the Arctic to the Antarctic and from the shallow subtidal to the deep sea, but their biology remains poorly known. In situ observations at the mouth of the Oslofjord by a remotely operated vehicle showed that Gorgonocephalus caputmedusae had a patchy distribution at 85 to 120 m water depth and frequently occurred in association with the gorgonian Paramuricea placomus and the coral Lophelia pertusa. Morphological and histological studies show that G. caputmedusae is well adapted to capture macroplanktonic prey. Histological examination of the arms revealed the presence of a thick layer of dermal mutable connective tissue which is probably an energy-efficient way to maintain its feeding posture against the current. This layer is connected to the nerve cord suggesting that the passive mechanical properties (stiffness) is controlled by the nervous system. In the distal parts of the arms, each segment has a pair of sticky tube feet and a sophisticated system of spines and hooks, which are connected to muscles and collagenous tendons. In combination, these features were shown, in an experimental flume study, to be used for capturing the locally abundant krill species Meganyctiphanes norvegica. Small-seeded plant species are often reported to have high relative growth rate or RGR. However, because RGR declines as plants grow larger, small-seeded species could achieve higher RGR simply by virtue of their small size. In contrast, size-standardized growth rate or SGR factors out these size effects. Differences in SGR can thus only be due to differences in morphology, allocation, or physiology. We used nonlinear regression to calculate SGR for comparison with RGR for 10 groups of species spanning a wide range of life forms. We found that RGR was negatively correlated with seed mass in nearly all groups, but the relationship between SGR and seed mass was highly variable. We conclude that small-seeded species only sometimes possess additional adaptations for rapid growth over and above their general size advantage. 相似文献

In order to avoid environmental threats, organisms may respond by altering behavior or phenotype. Using experiments performed in high-latitude Siberia and in temperate Sweden, we show for the first time that, among freshwater crustacean zooplankton, the defense against threats from ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a system where phenotypic plasticity and behavioral escape mechanisms function as complementary traits. Freshwater copepods relied mainly on accumulating protective pigments when exposed to UV radiation, but Daphnia showed strong behavioral responses. Pigment levels for both Daphnia and copepods were generally higher at higher latitudes, mirroring different UV threat levels. When released from the UV threat, Daphnia rapidly reduced (within 10 days) their UV protecting pigmentation-by as much as 40%--suggesting a cost in maintaining UV protective pigmentation. The evolutionary advantage of protective pigments is, likely, the ability to utilize the whole water column during daytime; conversely, since the amount of algal food is generally higher in surface waters, unpigmented individuals are restricted to a less preferred feeding habitat in deeper waters. Our main conclusion is that different zooplankton taxa, and similar taxa at different latitudes, use different mixes of behavior and pigments to respond to UV radiation. 相似文献

The solubility data for a series of non‐hydrogen bonding, monosubstituted benzenes in binary mixtures of water and non‐hydrogen bonding cosolvents is presented. Good correlation between log solubility and fraction cosolvent is obtained, therefore the estimation of solubility in mixed solvents by a log‐linear relationship can be attained. Slight positive or negative deviations from predicted solubility values are seen at high volume fractions of cosolvents. These deviations are attributed to the cosolvent‐water interactions. 相似文献

Bottom trawling is associated with reduced biomass and production in the marine benthic community. Abundance of hard-bodied
organisms such as bivalves, crustaceans and echinoderms typically declines in favour of soft-bodied opportunists such as polychaetes.
Trawling effects vary with habitat; impact and recovery time are typically greater for more complex substrates/communities
and those with lower rates of natural disturbance. Benthic organisms represent the prey base of a large component of the demersal
fish assemblage. Hence, trawling-induced change in benthic community structure and function may exert an indirect effect on
feeding success and growth of important commercially exploited fishes such as plaice Pleuronectes platessa. We present habitat-specific mixed effects models of plaice length as a function of age, bottom-trawling effort, population
density and near-bottom temperature, with sampling year and area, and fish sex incorporated as random effects. Across an observed
gradient of trawling effort in the Celtic Sea, plaice on gravel habitat showed significant declines in length at age while
plaice on sand habitat showed significant increases in length at age. Contrasting trawling effects likely reflect dietary
differences between habitats. Plaice on sand substrates are known to consume predominately polychaetes, which may proliferate
at moderate trawling intensity in this habitat. Conversely, plaice on gravel substrates are reported to consume more of the
fragile organisms such as echinoderms and bivalves that show marked declines with bottom trawling. An indirect effect of trawling
on prey availability and growth of demersal fish has substantial implications for fisheries sustainability via reduced ecosystem
carrying capacity and production of commercial fish. 相似文献
