Eusociality in mammals is defined in the present paper by the following criteria: reproductive altruism (which involves reproductive division of labor and cooperative alloparental brood care), overlap of adult generations, and permanent (lifelong) philopatry. We argue that additional criteria such as the existence of castes, colony size, reproductive skew, and social cohesion are not pertinent to the definition of eusociality in mammals. According to our definition of mammalian eusociality, several rodent species of the African family Bathyergidae can be considered eusocial, including the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber), Damaraland mole-rat (Cryptomys damarensis), and several additional, if not all, species in the genus Cryptomys. Furthermore, some species of social voles (like Microtus ochrogaster) may also fulfill criteria of mammalian eusociality. Understanding the evolution of eusociality in mole-rats requires answers to two primary questions: (1) What are the preconditions for the development of their eusocial systems? (2) Why do offspring remain in the natal group rather than dispersing and reproducing? Eusociality in mammals is by definition a special case of monogamy (more specifically: monogyny one female breeding), involving prolonged pair bonding for more than one breeding period. We argue that eusociality in mole-rats evolved from a monogamous mating system where cooperative brood care was already established. A tendency for group living is considered to be an ancestral (plesiomorph) trait among African bathyergid mole-rats, linking them to other hystricognath rodents. A solitary lifestyle seen in some genera, such as Bathyergus, Georychus, and Heliophobius, is assumed to be a derived trait that arose independently in different lineages of bathyergids, possibly as a consequence of selective constraints associated with the subterranean environment. In proximate terms, in eusocial mole-rats either puberty is assumed to be developmentally delayed so that under natural conditions most animals die before dispersal is triggered (e.g., in the case of Heterocephalus) or dispersal is induced only by an incidental encounter with an unfamiliar, yet adequate sexual partner (e.g., in the case of Cryptomys). Ultimately, a combination of strategies involving either dispersal and/or philopatry can be beneficial, especially in a highly unpredictable environment. If genetic relatedness among siblings is high (e.g., a coefficient of relatedness of 0.5 or more), then philopatry would not invoke an appreciable loss of fitness, especially if the cost of dispersing is higher than staying within the natal group. High genetic relatedness is more likely in a monogamous mating system or a highly inbred population. In this paper, we argue that the preconditions for eusociality in bathyergid mole-rats were a monogamous mating system and high genetic relatedness among individuals. We argue against the aridity food-distribution hypothesis (AFDH) that suggests a causal relationship between cooperative foraging for patchily distributed resources and the origin of eusociality. The AFDH may explain group size dynamics of social mole-rats as a function of the distribution and availability of resources but it is inadequate to explain the formation of eusocial societies of mole-rats, especially with respect to providing preconditions conducive for the emergence of eusociality.  相似文献

Coral-spawn slicks in the Great Barrier Reef: preliminary observations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Aerial surveys and surface samples in the spring of 1985, showed that slicks of coral eggs and embryos (coral spawn) formed in large numbers within and between reefs in the Central Great Barrier Reef Region. Coral-spawn slicks appeared on the days immediately following the annual mass multispecific spawning of reef corals. They were white or pink in colour, and were often highly elongate in form extending up to 5 km in length, and 10 m in width. Over 99% of each slick sampled during the surveys consisted of dead eggs, embryos and their breakdown products, which formed dense, highly viscous patches readily recognizable during aerial surveys. Despite the low proportion of live material, the slicks contained high concentrations of live embryos (15 to 230 per litre) which were over two orders of magnitude greater than concentrations in adjacent water masses. The distinctive colour, shape and texture of the coral-spawn slicks generally distinguished them from slicks formed by blooms of the blue-green alga Oscillatoria erythraea, which also occur commonly in the region. Many of the slicks were closely associated with surface oceanographic features, such as fronts between water parcels, and wakes and eddies behind reefs. Although more detailed sampling and surveys are required, these results suggest that it may be possible to track the movements of coral embryos and larvae directly for the first one or two days following mass spawning, and indirectly thereafter by monitoring other surface features.  相似文献

In a laboratory colony of the asexual solitary endoparasitoid Venturia canescens Grav. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), two genetically and phenotypically distinct lines (RP and RM) appear to coexist sympatrically, with the reproductive success of the RM-line being greater under con-specific superparasitism but lower under self superparasitism. To investigate the basis of the RM-lines advantage under con-specific superparasitism, we examined the outcome of inter-larval physical combat under in-vitro conditions. The results showed that the outcome depended on both the relative and absolute ages of the contestants, and that the competitive abilities of the two lines were not symmetric. In contests involving a larva and an egg, the unhatched wasp lost. In contests involving two larvae, at least one of which was newly hatched, the RP-larva tended to lose. Finally, if both larvae were at least 8–10 h post-hatching when the contest occurred, then the larger larva tended to lose, with the probability increasing with the difference in length between the two larvae. Thus, the higher reproductive success of the RM-line under competing superparasitism with the RP-line is due to a physiological difference between the newly hatched larvae of the two lines, which results in an advantage to the RM-larva independent of the order or time interval between ovipositions.Communicated by P. Yanornis martini is an Early Cretaceous basal ornithurine bird. Its fish-eating diet was previously recognized from a discrete mass of disarticulated fish remains discovered in its abdominal region. A new complete and articulated specimen of Yanornis martini preserves abundant in-situ gastroliths such as have been associated with a herbivorous diet. We suggest that the occurrence of gastroliths in this specimen, fish remains in a second, and the lack of gastroliths in three others, is consistent with diet-switching in Yanornis martini. Incompatibility of the preserved data with explanations of the grit as an artifact of preservation or result of accidental ingestion is discussed. This discovery indicates the earliest presence of intermittent diet change (and associated gizzard plasticity) observed in extant birds seasonally and in response to changes in available food sources.  相似文献

As it is practically impossible in an industrial society to reduce impacts into ecosystems to a level that would preclude any damages, the need for damage valuation arises. One of the available valuation tools is the economic approach. Subsequent publications present this approach using the example of soils. In the first part, soils as part of ecosystems are considered from an ecological and a conventional economic point of view. In the following so-called ecological-economic perspective, more recent developments in economic valuation research are introduced. It is shown how ecological and economic valuation can complement one another. It is emphasized that economic valuations should be restricted to a critical soil structure which, in economic terms, is determined by the non-substitutable services of the ecological asset.  相似文献

Diphenylamine (DPA), the simplest secondary aromatic amine, is a compound from the third European Union (EU) list of priority pollutants. It was assigned to Germany to assess and control its environmental risks. DPA is most commonly used as a stabilizer agent in nitrocellulose-containing explosives and propellants, in the perfumery, and as an antioxidant in the rubber and elastomer industry. DPA is also widely used to prevent the post-harvest deterioration of apple and pear crops. It is a parent compound of many derivatives which are used for the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, photography chemicals and further small-scale applications. At the beginning of the eighties, the estimated world production of DPA was ?40,000 tons per year (in Germany ?4,000 tons per year). The compound is still produced world-wide by the chemical industries. Recently published reports showed that DPA was found in soil and groundwater (within the ppb to ppm range). Some ecotoxicological reports demonstrated the potential hazard of various diphenylamines to the aquatic environment and to bacteria and animals as well. Studies on the biodegradability of DPA and its derivatives are very sparse. Therefore, further investigations are required to determine the complete dimensions of the potential environmental hazard and to introduce possible (bio)remediation techniques for sites that are contaminated with this compound or its derivatives. This review summarizes the environmental relevance of DPA as has been published in the literature thus far. It may possibly support the German authorities in their assessment of the risks of this priority pollutant.  相似文献
