A pure culture of Acinetobacter lwoffi was grown in a batch and continuous culture using phenol as the limiting substrate. Five kinetic models were applied to the data to determine the kinetic parameters governing growth of the organisms. A non-linear leastsquares technique was used to fit the data to the different functions. No significant differences were found on statistical basis between the models and so a choice was made on the grounds of mathematical simplicity. The so-called ‘Haldane function’ was chosen as the best and utilised in the model describing the steady-state behaviour of the chemostat. This model takes into account the inhibitory character of phenol and also the maintenance energy of the bacteria. Analysis of local stability shows that one can expect to obtain three steady states of which one is the trivial washout state, another is unstable and the third is a high conversion stable steady state.This model was tested with a pure culture of Acinetobacter lwoffi and phenol inlet concentrations of 200, 500 and 1000 mgl?1. This study examines the relationship of Type A behaviour to career experiences associated with feelings of personal failure (Korman and Korman, 1980). Seventy-five managers completed the Jenkins Activity Survey, a widely used paper-and-pencil index of Type A behaviour, and measures of various career experiences. The data provided concurrent validation of the Korman's model and also showed Type A behaviour to be significantly related to career outcomes reflecting disappointment, alienation and personal failure. A case is made for the inclusion of Type A in career research. Implications for careerists and their organizations are offered. 相似文献

Eleven urinary metabolites from [14C]propachlor were either identified or characterized by mass spectrometry. Those identified were 2-[S-(N-acetyl)cysteinyl]-N-isopropylacetanilide, 2-(methylsulfonyl)-acetanilide, 4'-hydroxy-2-(methylsulfonyl)-acetanilide, and 4'-hydroxyacetanilide. As part of its work on marine environmental protection the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's, Fisheries Laboratory at Burnham-on-Crouch, undertook a mussel survey in England and Wales in 1978. Trace metal, organochlorine pesticide and PCB residue concentrations were determined. The survey comprised about 80 samples covering the whole of England and Wales.
The results of the survey showed that in general the contaminant concentrations reflected the expected environmental distributions of the compounds of interest. Samples from areas with significant anthropogenic inputs such as industrial estuaries generally contained the highest concentrations and samples from areas influenced mainly by natural sources usually contained much lower contaminant concentrations, although there were some notable exceptions. The survey indicates the usefulness of a mussel watch approach to monitoring in England and Wales and the suggestion is made that if used on a local more intensive scale the technique should be able to identify in greater detail the likely sources of pollution. 相似文献

“Black Spot” a necrotic shell disease in crustacea, is a naturally occurring condition in crabs (Cancer pagurus) and is more common in older animals, where the moult frequency is reduced. The results of field observations in various commercial crab fisheries suggest that the incidence of “Black Spot” shell disease is higher in lightly fished populations (e.g. S. W. Ireland) than in established fisheries, where intensive exploitation results in the removal of larger (older) crabs from the stock. These observations are used to explain suggestions by other workers that the incidence of shell necrosis is high in areas used for dumping sewage sludge where fishing intensity is low. 相似文献

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA) for metolachlor (2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamid e) detection in river water and soil was developed using serum obtained from rabbits immunized against the acid of metalaxyl ((N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-N-(methoxy-acetyl)-DL-alanine methyl ester) conjugated to bovine serum albumin. The assay had a linear working range from 1 to 50 ng/ml with a mean I50 value of 13.6 ng/ml and a lower detection limit of 2.0 ng/ml. Both the mean interwell and interassay coefficients of variation were less than 4% over the range of the standard curves for samples which had been prepared in phosphate buffered saline (PBS), river water, or soil extract. Assay cross-reactivity to the following four structurally related chloro-acetanilide pesticides were: propachlor (0%), metazachlor (0%), alachlor (23%), and metalaxyl (5,000%). Mean recoveries of metolachlor in spiked (2.0 to 32.0 ng/ml range) PBS, river water, and soil extract were 102%, 103%, and 110%, respectively. Soil samples were taken over a 56-d period from field plots treated with metolachlor and analyzed by GC and EIA. The correlation coefficient for comparison of the two methods was 0.96 with the slope of the linear regression line being 0.78. Furthermore, no statistical difference (P less than 0.05) was found between the dissipation curves of metolachlor derived from GC data versus EIA data. 相似文献

The loss of carbofuran was studied from rice paddy water treated with a granular formulation of the insecticide, and from ponds filled with drainage from the paddy. The average half-life (t 1/2) for carbofuran loss was 57 hr. Controlled experiments indicated that pH was the predominating factor governing carbofuran loss from water in the environment studied. The loss due to hydrolysis was over 700 times more rapid at pH (t 1/2 = 1.2 hr.) than at pH (t 1/2 = 864 hr.) in buffered deionized water. The average pH of the rice paddy was 8, but diurnal fluctuations of 7 to 9.5 are common in similar environments. Impurities in the water, sunlight, and temperature influence the rate of carbofuran loss but not nearly so much as pH. There was no evidence for significant loss due to evaporation or oxidation. The results have important implications for the duration of the insecticide's activity and the effect on fish within or downstream from treated paddies. 相似文献

This paper argues that the environmental changes witnessed in the past decade call for a new approach to environmental management; an approach based not on the principle of the assimilative capacity of the environment but on the precautionary principle, and the emerging preventive environmental paradigm. Uncertainties in scientific knowledge and complexities in ecological systems have presented specific failures of the assimilative capacity methodology. It is argued that these failures are not circumstantial in nature, nor are they the result of misapplication of science by scientists. Rather, they represent inherent problems in the use of the assimilative capacity concept in environmental management. The emergence of the precautionary principle is discussed and a formulation of the principle is presented. In conjunction with the operational approach of clean production, we believe that this principle offers a sounder basis for the prevention of marine pollution in the next decade. 相似文献

Whole samples of Palaemon elegans Rathke, 1837 and eggs of Paracentrotus lividus Lamarck, 1816 were collected on the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon in the summer and fall of 1977 and the spring of 1978. All were analysed for lead, cadmium, copper and other heavy metals. Lead concentrations in both the prawns and sea urchin eggs appeared to be highest in the summer and lowest in the spring, whereas cadmium was low in all seasons with only a few elevated readings. The strongest tendency towards seasonal variation was seen in the copper levels of the prawns, which were high in summer, much lower in fall, and then high again in spring. Results of the analyses for nickel, iron, zinc and chromium are also discussed. Of the various possible sources of heavy metals in the Ras Beirut coastal area, untreated sewage, pesticide residues, and automobile exhaust are the most important. 相似文献
