Seasonal and spatial differences in the fish assemblage of the non-estuarine Sulaibikhat Bay,Kuwait 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

In the period September 1986 to August 1987 fish were captured once a month, using an otter trawl, from the intertidal and subtidal regions of Sulaibikhat Bay, Kuwait. Correlation analysis revealed that numbers were not directly related to temperature at the time of sampling. The recruitment of large numbers of young of the year Liza carinata (Valenciennes) during March was related to low temperatures in November, the probable time of spawning of this species. Salinity at the time of sampling was inversely correlated with numbers. This result indicates that large numbers of 0+fish recruit to the Bay during the period of maximum fresh water outflow through the Shatt-al-Arab. Numbers of fish were significantly greater in the intertidal region, where they were present almost entirely as 0 group fish, than in the subtidal. The three dominant species of the assemblage are shown to use the two depth intervals in differnt ways. L. carinata was capture a almost exclusively in the intertidal region as 0+ fish. Pomadasys stridens (Forsskål) was captured as 0+ fish in both the intertidal and subtidal regions but in greater numbers in the intertidal region. Leiognathus brevirostris (Valenciennes) was captured as small, mostly 0+ individuals in the intertidal region and as larger fish in the subtidal region. The use made by the smaller fish of the intertidal region is related to the avoidance of sublittoral predators and reduction of intraspecific competition, whilst larger fish in the sublittoral region may be avoiding predation by piscivorous birds. 相似文献

Bacterial productivity in sandy sediments on reef flats at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef was determined from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. The study was conducted during January 1982 and July 1983. A small diurnal increase occurred in sediments having a dense population of microalgae. Bacterial production was 120 to 370 mg C m-2 d-1 in summer on reef flats, which was equivalent to 30–40% of primary production by benthic microalgae. In winter, rates of primary production by benthic microalgae and secondary production by bacteria were about one-half to one-fifth of those in summer. There was much variation in production, due to patchiness in the distribution of benthic microbes, especially microalgae. Doubling times for the bacteria in surface sediment were 1 to 2 d in summer and 4 to 16 d in winter on the reef flats. These high productivity values for bacteria indicated that a net input of organic matter to the sediment was needed to support the growth of bacteria. Sediment bacteria thus have a very important role in transforming organic matter on the reef flats. Grazing by Holothuria atra depressed both primary production and bacterial production. It was estimated that these holothurians ate about 10 to 40% of bacterial carbon produced each day in summer, and thus have an important role in the carbon cycle. Harpacticoid copepods were numerically important components of the benthic meiofaunal community and probably had a significant impact on bacterial density as grazers. 相似文献

Carbon fixation in marine phytoplankton: carboxylase activities and stable carbon-isotope ratios; physiological and paleoclimatological aspects 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We measured the activity of three carboxylases: RuBP carboxylase, PEP carboxylase and PEP carboxykinase of marine phytoplankton species in culture and in natural communities. Activities of the three carboxylases were measured simultaneously with stable carbon-isotope ratios. The enzymatic activities have been used to estimate the importance of carboxylation and its impact on the 13C:12C ratio (expressed as 13C). The marine phytoplankton species in culture were Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Nitzschia turgiduloides, Skeletonema costatum, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella marina, and Prorocentrum micans, and the field samples were collected from different depths off the coast of Portugal (August/September, 1981). Our results indicate that, as in terrestrial plants, the 13C value is a good indicator of the extent of carboxylation. RuBP carboxylase activity was always predominant, whereas the 13C value never reached values typical of the C4 pathway. The carboxylases could be PEP carboxylase (in dinoflagellates) or PEP carboxykinase (in diatoms). carboxylation increased at the end of the exponential growth phase in a diatom culture and with increased biomass in natural samples. During cadmium uptake by the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.), cadmium appears in both haemolymph and urine within 1 h, and comes into equilibrium with the haemolymp after some 60 h. The equilibrium concentration for haemolymph cadmium is always considerably less than that of the external medium, whether the latter is close to background level or at the artificially high concentration of 2.2 mg l-1. Despite earlier evidence that cadmium entering the haemolymph is mainly bound to protein, current results show most of this to be freely labile and quickly displaced by cadmium taken up subsequently. There is some evidence to suggest that cadmium is passed on from the haemolymph to the hepatopancreas. A large proportion of whole-body cadmium is adsorbed onto the exoskeleton and gills. The comparatively rapid efflux of 109Cd from loaded crabs over a period of 1 week is mainly due to desorption of this cadmium from the outer body surface. 相似文献

A Comparison of Corridors and Intrinsic Connectivity to Promote Dispersal in Transient Successional Landscapes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Low-vagility organisms that specialize on transitory successional habitats may be especially dependent upon habitat connectivity to maintain population viability. We analyzed the theoretical intrinsic connectivity of successional landscapes (i.e., the natural juxtaposition of similar habitats that allows dispersal) as a function of patch geometry coupled with the disperser's habitat specificity. Habitat specialists living in poorly connected landscapes (approximating hexagonal patches) have only a 26.5% chance of colonizing a new site when their resident patch becomes unsuitable. In contrast, generalists living in well connected landscapes can virtually always colonize a new site when needed. We infer from our simulation that for some habitat specialists, such as the rare, endemic Florida scrub lizard (Sceloporus woodi), anthropogenic control of successional dynamics for commercial logging may significantly reduce intrinsic connectivity. Lizard population viability may now depend upon the extrinsic connectivity provided by artificial corridors. However, the use of corridors will not serve as a general solution to the problem of anthropogenically reduced intrinsic connectivity until key logistical design problems have been resolved. Moreover, efforts to enhance intrinsic connectivity by modifying patch geometry may produce undesirable edge effects and conflict with old-growth preservation. Future research should focus on developing spatially explicit corridor models, documenting natural levels of intrinsic connectivity, quantifying anthropogenic disruption of natural connectivity, and describing species-specific mechanisms of inter-patch dispersal. 相似文献

The significance of hatch date for the growth and survival of the sandeel,Ammodytes marinus, was investigated using otolith microstructure. Hatch dates of 2 to 6 mo-old juvenileA. marinus caught near Shetland were compared between 1990 and 1992, during which period year-class strength varied by more than an order of magnitude. The hatch-date distribution of juveniles in the 1992 year-class was compared with that estimated directly from the abundance of newly emerged larvae on the spawning grounds. The extent of larval hatching periods in 1990 and 1991 was also estimated from continuous plankton-recorder data. There were significant differences in hatching periods between all three years, hatching in 1990 and 1992 being markedly earlier than the long-term mean peak in hatching indicated from archival data. Most individuals from the 1991 year-class attained a larger size by July than those in other year-classes, despite hatching later. Variation in individual growth rates both within and between year-classes indicated that there was a seasonal cycle of growth opportunity in all years investigated. The study suggests that the degree of coupling between hatching and the onset of spring secondary production may be an important contributory factor to year-class variability in this species. 相似文献

Inbreeding Depression, Environmental Stress, and Population Size Variation in Scarlet Gilia (Ipomopsis aggregata) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Despite a large body of theory, few studies have directly assessed the effects of variation in population size on fitness components in natural populations of plants. We conducted studies on 10 populations of scarlet gilia, Ipomopsis aggregata , to assess the effects of population size and year-to-year variation in size on the relative fitness of plants. We showed that seed size and germination success are significantly reduced in small populations (those 100 flowering plants) of scarlet gilia. Plants from small populations are also more susceptible to environmental stress. When plants from small and large populations were subjected to an imposed stress (combined effects of transplanting and experimental clipping, simulating ungulate herbivory) in a common garden experiment, plants from small populations suffered higher mortality and were ultimately of smaller size than plants from large populations. In addition, experimental evidence indicates that observed fitness reductions are genetic, due to the effects of genetic drift and/or inbreeding depression. When pollen was introduced from distant populations into two small populations, seed mass and percentage of germination were bolstered, while pollen transferred into a large population had no significant effect. Year-to-year variation in population size and its effects on plant fitness are also discussed. In one small population, for example, a substantial increase in size from within did not introduce sufficient new (archived) genetic material to fully overcome the effects of inbreeding depression. 相似文献

Among sedentary species, mate and site fidelity may be imposed by year-round territoriality and high annual survivorship, both of which theoretically lead to few opportunities to move between mates and breeding territories. We examined mate and territory fidelity in sedentary neotropical buff-breasted wrens (Thryothorus leucotis) in relation to the opportunities to divorce (vacancies on neighbouring territories), breeding experience and site of origin (within vs outside local breeding population). Overall, buff-breasted wrens showed high rates of mate and territory fidelity between years, with individuals significantly more faithful to their territories than to their partners. Mate and territory fidelity was not forced upon buff-breasted wrens, as most individuals had opportunities to switch mates and territories. However, this was not uniform among all individuals. Individuals that had bred together displayed 100% mate and territory fidelity despite the fact that males and females in almost all experienced pairs had opportunities to switch mates and territories. Local recruits (philopatric offspring that acquired territories in the local breeding population) also displayed mate and territory fidelity, but fidelity occurred because recruits rarely had the opportunity to divorce prior to initiating their first breeding attempt. By contrast, almost half of all territorial individuals that originated outside the local breeding population (immigrants) had opportunity to divorce, with approximately two thirds of them switching mates and territories. Divorces occurred within the first 5 months of pairing, suggesting that immigrants may have sampled mates and territories before forming permanent partnerships. 相似文献

Summary Female burying beetles Necrophorus vespilloides Herbst (Coleoptera: Silphidae) were allowed to lay eggs on a carcass and their subsequent behavior towards larvae added to the carcass was observed. Females did not discriminate against unrelated larvae if these were added within an hour after the females' own first larva had hatched (at the right time). Changing the spatial surroundings of the carcass had no effect on the females' readiness to exhibit care behavior. Neither did the age of the larvae added or the condition of the carcass affect the onset of maternal care. However, the females' response to larvae encountered was strongly time-dependent: most females killed and ate larvae that could not have hatched from their own eggs because they were added long before their own larvae hatched. The proportion of females accepting larvae added to early increased as the time their own larvae hatched approached. Larvae added to the carcass 2 or 3 days after the test females' own first larva had hatched were always accepted by females that had already started to feed larvae, but were often killed by females that were not feeding larvae. In the latter group of females, the tendency to kill larvae added was most pronounced if the females had already started to produce a second clutch of eggs at the time larvae were added.
