A novel approach for measuring vertical profiles of HCs and particle number concentrations was described and applied in the low troposphere over Milan (Italy) during typical spring and summer days. Particle profiles yielded nearly homogeneous concentrations below the mixing height, with level-to-ground concentration ratios of 92-97%, while HCs showed a more pronounced decrease (74-95%). Vertical mixing and photochemical loss of HCs were demonstrated to cause these gradients. Much lower concentrations were observed for the profiles above the mixing height, where the HC mixtures showed also a different composition, which was partially explained by the horizontal advection of air with HC sources different to those prevailing at the site. The application of pseudo-first order kinetics for reactions between HCs and the hydroxyl radical allowed for the estimation of the vertical mixing time scale in the order of 100 ± 20 min. 相似文献

As previous work proposed commercial expectations for soluble bio-organic substances (SBO) isolated from compost of urban food, gardening and park trimming residues as chemical auxiliaries, nine urban bio-wastes (BW) treated by aerobic and anaerobic digestion for 0-360 days were used to extract SBO and investigate source variability effects on product chemical composition and properties. The bio-wastes were collected over a 13732 km2 area populated by 2.9 millions from 565 municipalities. The SBO were characterized by their content of different C types and functional groups and by their distribution coefficient (KPEGW) between polyethylene glycol and water. A significant linear correlation was found between KPEGW and the lipophilic/hydrophilic C ratio. The investigated SBO exhibited up to sixfold change of KPEGW demonstrating that BW available from densely populated urban areas are an interesting exploitable source of a wide variety of potential products for the chemical market. 相似文献

Louisiana (LA) ranks fifth in the United States in cancer mortality rate. LA's infamous “cancer alley” is a well evidenced region near the southeast part of the Mississippi river surrounding the petrochemical hub of the state. LA has also experienced a high COVID-19 death rate and incidences compared to other states during the recent pandemic. In this study we analyzed publicly available datasets related to health and socio-economic parameters in LA to determine the factors triggering high incidences and deaths caused by COVID-19. Correlation analysis was performed to find the impact of different parameters on the outcome of COVID-19. Our analysis showed higher COVID-19 incidences in the parishes which are in and around the “cancer alley” with a correlation of r = 0.9. Interestingly, results also indicated a strong correlation (r = 0.9) between the death rates caused by asbestos toxicity to COVID-19 caused death rate. Furthermore, we found that office-administration related employment has a positive correlation to COVID-19 incidences in the “cancer alley.” However, we also found both white and black races are equally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the “cancer alley” region. In conclusion, our analysis strongly suggests that inhabiting “cancer alley” could significantly enhance the chances of getting affected by SARS-CoV-2 virus compared to other regions in LA. 相似文献

Several samples of airborne particulate matter (PM), collected from 6th November to 6th December 2003 at a coastal site in the south-east of Italy, have been analyzed by different techniques to characterize elemental composition and morphological properties of the inorganic PM fraction and obtain preliminary results on anthropogenic contributions. Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, V, Pb, Ti, Ca and Zn mass concentrations, evaluated by an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer, account for up to l% of the bulk PM mass in the investigated samples. According to geochemical calculations, Ca, Al, Fe and Mn are predominantly of crustal origin, while Cr, Cu, Pb, V, Ti and Zn heavy metals are of anthropogenic origin. Ion chromatography analyses have identified sulfate (SO(4)(2-)) nitrate (NO(3)(-)), sodium (Na(+)), and ammonium (NH(4)(+)) as the main ionic components accounting for up to 38% of the total PM mass and up to 90% of the total ionic mass. Besides ion chromatography, X-ray energy dispersive (EDX) microanalyses have revealed the high variability of Cl: its weight concentration varies from about 24% to below the detection limit (>or=0.5%) in the investigated samples. The marked anti-correlation between the excess of S and the Cl/Na ratio has allowed inferring that reactions between sea salt particles and acidic sulfates, which liberate HCl gas to the atmosphere leaving particles enriched in non-sea-salt sulfates, have significantly contributed to chloride depletion. Municipal bio-refuse (CVD), containing kitchen wastes, home gardening residues and public park trimmings, was treated with alkali to yield a soluble bio-organic fraction (SBO) and an insoluble residue. These materials were characterized using elemental analysis, potentiometric titration, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and then applied as organic fertilizers to soil for tomato greenhouse cultivation. Their performance was compared with a commercial product obtained from animal residues. Plant growth, fruit yield and quality, and soil and leaf chemical composition were the selected performance indicators. The SBO exhibited the best performance by enhancing leaf chlorophyll content, improving plant growth and fruit ripening rate and yield. No product performance-chemical composition relationship could be assessed. Solubility could be one reason for the superior performance of SBO as a tomato growth promoter. The enhancement of leaf chlorophyll content is discussed to identify a possible link with the SBO photosensitizing properties that have been demonstrated in other work, and thus with photosynthetic performance. 相似文献

The gas/particle partitioning coefficient K p , of a semivolatile compound is a key parameter for its atmospheric fate. The most complete method of predicting K p for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is offered by the dual model, as it describes both the adsorption on soot and absorption into organic matter processes. However, experimental and model data exist almost exclusively for PAHs. In order to bridge this gap, experimental data on the phase partitioning of both PAHs and n-alkanes were collected at an urban and a remote site. Moreover, all the necessary parameters (e.g., octanol–air and soot–air partitioning coefficients) for the dual model have been collected and updated or (if missing) estimated for the first time. The results point out that both absorption and adsorption seem to contribute to the partitioning of PAHs and n-alkanes. However, it seems that the dual model always underestimates the particle sorption not only for PAHs but also for n-alkanes. 相似文献

Amphipods Eurythenes gryllus were collected at 7800?m depth in the Atacama Trench (South Pacific) for studying their biochemical composition (in terms of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates and fatty acid content) and to gather information on bioenergetic strategies and trophic habits of organisms living in this extreme environment. The effect of long-term formalin storage on the biochemical determinations was also determined. Proteins were the dominant biochemical class of organic compounds (39–53%D.W.), whereas carbohydrates accounted for a very small fraction (1–2%D.W.). Lipid concentrations of E. gryllus accounted for 7–18%D.W. and were much lower than those reported for other deep-sea amphipods. These differences are likely to be more dependent upon food availability in the Atacama Trench rather than upon temperature. Lipid composition of E. gryllus revealed the dominance of monounsaturated fatty acids with polyunsaturated fatty acids accounting for a very small fraction, suggesting that hadal amphipods are higher dependent upon lipid reserves than amphipods inhabiting at shallow depths. The ratio of C18:1Δ9 to C18:1Δ11 was >11 confirming the necrophagous trophic habits of this hadal amphipod. 相似文献
