Pollutants and the health of green sea turtles resident to an urbanized estuary in San Diego, CA 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Rapid expansion of coastal anthropogenic development means that critical foraging and developmental habitats often occur near highly polluted and urbanized environments. Although coastal contamination is widespread, the impact this has on long-lived vertebrates like the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is unclear because traditional experimental methods cannot be applied. We coupled minimally invasive sampling techniques with health assessments to quantify contaminant patterns in a population of green turtles resident to San Diego Bay, CA, a highly urbanized and contaminated estuary. Several chemicals were correlated with turtle size, suggesting possible differences in physiological processes or habitat utilization between life stages. With the exception of mercury, higher concentrations of carapace metals as well as 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and γ chlordane in blood plasma relative to other sea turtle studies raises important questions about the chemical risks to turtles resident to San Diego Bay. Mercury concentrations exceeded immune function no-effects thresholds and increased carapace metal loads were correlated with higher levels of multiple health markers. These results indicate immunological and physiological effects studies are needed in this population. Our results give insight into the potential conservation risk contaminants pose to sea turtles inhabiting this contaminated coastal habitat, and highlight the need to better manage and mitigate contaminant exposure in San Diego Bay. 相似文献

Coastal land subsidence is a serious problem in Taiwan. Starting in 1995, the goal of the “Land Subsidence Prevention and
Treatment Implementation Program” is to restructure the aquaculture industry to reduce groundwater consumption and reduce
coastal land subsidence problems. However, this goal has not been met. This study aims to determine the reasons for its failure
through a literature review and an analysis of questionnaires of stakeholders taken over a 5-year period, and design a new
program to resolve these problems. The study was conducted in 2005–2009. According to the literature, over-pumping of groundwater
around densely concentrated coastal fish ponds is the primary cause of coastal land subsidence. However, the key measure of
the program was to establish aquaculture districts primarily in subsiding coastal areas, which failed to reduce land subsidence.
In addition, the program did not consider reductions in agricultural and industrial groundwater use. Results of the questionnaire
survey were in accord with the literature review results. This paper proposes to establish a “Fish Farming Abandonment Program”
offering compensation payments and job training to fish farmers who leave the aquaculture business, thus reducing the amount
of coastal land devoted to fish farming, decreasing groundwater consumption, and halting further coastal subsidence. In addition,
the proposal also suggests adjustments to the structure of the agriculture industry. The results of this study can serve as

Synthetic detergents are among the commonly used chemicals in everyday life. Detergents, reaching aquatic environments through domestic and municipal wastewater, can cause many different effects in aquatic organisms. The present study was aimed at the toxicity evaluation of a commonly used laundry detergent, Ariel, using the freshwater flagellate Euglena gracilis as a biotest organism. Different parameters of the flagellate like motility, swimming velocity, cell shape, gravitactic orientation, photosynthesis and concentration of light harvesting pigments were used as end points for the toxicity assessment. No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) and EC50 values were calculated for the end point parameters at four different incubation times, i.e. 0, 6, 24 and 72 h. After 72 h incubation, swimming velocity of the cells was found to be the most sensitive parameter giving NOEC and EC50 values of 10.8 and 34 mg L−1, respectively. After 72 h exposure to the detergent, chlorophyll a and total carotenoids were significantly decreased in cultures treated with Ariel at concentrations of 50 mg L−1 and above while chlorophyll b significantly decreased at concentrations above 750 mg L−1. The maximum inhibitory effect on the quantum yield of photosystem II was observed after 24 h exposure and thereafter a recovery trend was observed. Motility, gravitaxis and cell shape were strongly impaired immediately upon exposure to the detergent, but with increasing exposure time these parameters showed acclimatization to the stress and thus the NOEC values obtained after 72 h were higher than those immediately after exposure. 相似文献

Corruption is a threat to the purpose of humanitarian assistance. Until fairly recently, humanitarian assistance has not been considered an important arena in broader efforts aimed at curbing corruption, and corruption has not always been considered a particularly important concern for humanitarian assistance despite the obviously challenging nature of the context of humanitarian emergencies. Corruption, though, is a threat to humanitarian action because it can prevent assistance from getting to the people who most need it, and because it can potentially undermine public support for such assistance. This paper examines perceptions of corruption and its affects, documents best practices, and outlines gaps in understanding. It suggests recommendations for improving the capacity of humanitarian agencies to prevent and manage the risk of corruption. Agencies have taken steps to combat corruption and improve accountability--downwards and upwards--but scope remains for improvement and for greater sharing of learning and good practice. 相似文献

Water pollution is one of the major threats to public health in Pakistan. Drinking water quality is poorly managed and monitored. Pakistan ranks at number 80 among 122 nations regarding drinking water quality. Drinking water sources, both surface and groundwater are contaminated with coliforms, toxic metals and pesticides throughout the country. Various drinking water quality parameters set by WHO are frequently violated. Human activities like improper disposal of municipal and industrial effluents and indiscriminate applications of agrochemicals in agriculture are the main factors contributing to the deterioration of water quality. Microbial and chemical pollutants are the main factors responsible exclusively or in combination for various public health problems. This review discusses a detailed layout of drinking water quality in Pakistan with special emphasis on major pollutants, sources of pollution and the consequent health problems. The data presented in this review are extracted from various studies published in national and international journals. Developmental maternal effects are a potentially important source of phenotypic variation, but they can be difficult to distinguish
from other environmental factors. This is an important distinction within the context of social evolution, because if variation
in offspring helping behavior is due to maternal manipulation, social selection may act on maternal phenotypes, as well as
those of offspring. Factors correlated with social castes have been linked to variation in developmental nutrition, which
might provide opportunity for females to manipulate the social behavior of their offspring. Megalopta genalis is a mass-provisioning facultatively eusocial sweat bee for which production of males and females in social and solitary
nests is concurrent and asynchronous. Female offspring may become either gynes (reproductive dispersers) or workers (non-reproductive
helpers). We predicted that if maternal manipulation plays a role in M. genalis caste determination, investment in daughters should vary more than for sons. The mass and protein content of pollen stores
provided to female offspring varied significantly more than those of males, but volume and sugar content did not. Sugar content
varied more among female eggs in social nests than in solitary nests. Provisions were larger, with higher nutrient content,
for female eggs and in social nests. Adult females and males show different patterns of allometry, and their investment ratio
ranged from 1.23 to 1.69. Adult body weight varied more for females than males, possibly reflecting increased variation in
maternal investment in female offspring. These differences are consistent with a role for maternal manipulation in the social

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in the environment; there are concerns about them due to their toxic
properties. Human activities could significantly contribute to the total PAH burden in river sediments. In this work, we document
the analysis of PAHs in sediments taken in the middle stretch of the Biobio River in south central Chile. This river is a
principal system, draining more than 24,000 km2 and subjected to a diverse variety of human-made stressors (pulp mill and urban effluents, agricultural drainage systems,
etc). During 2003, several sediment samples were taken in more than 45 sampling sites located in the river’s middle stretch.
Due to the granulometric characteristics (mainly sandy sediments), only 17 samples were analyzed, taking into consideration
the presence of a fine section within the sediment sample. Using HPLC with fluorescence detection, 15 EPA priority PAHs and
perylene were analyzed. The composition of PAHs in the sediment samples is rather similar between sites and levels averaged
104 ± 78 ng g−1 d.w. The highest levels were detected downstream from an industrial discharge. A good correlation was observed between PAH
levels and organic carbon content in the tested sediments; however, concentrations above 134 ng g−1 d.w. did not indicate correlation. The samples PAH ratios (Flu/Pyr and Chr/B(a)A) reveal a strong pyrolytic PAH pattern in
the sediments tested, supporting evidence indicating that PAHs come mainly from pyrolytic sources. This result contrasts with
previous records that have shown a natural influence in the upper basin and a petrogenic pattern near the mouth. 相似文献

Eighteen representative sites for the Austrian grain-growing and eight for the potato-growing zones (soils and crops) were
investigated. On each site, total element contents (B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, P, Sr and Zn) were determined
in 4–12 varieties of winter wheat (n = 136), 6 varieties of spring durum wheat (n = 30), 5 varieties of winter durum wheat (n = 15), 7 varieties of rye (n = 49), 5 varieties of spring barley (n = 30) and 5 varieties of potatoes (n = 40). Element accumulations in grain species and potato tubers varied significantly with site conditions, with the main
exceptions for B in potatoes and wheat as well as for Zn, Cu and Co in durum wheat. On average, across all investigated sites,
differences in varieties occurred concerning the elements Ca, Cd, Ba, Sr and Zn (except Zn in potatoes and winter durum).
A rough estimation revealed that an average Austrian consumer of wheat, rye and potatoes meets more than 50% of the needs
of daily element intake for K, P and Mg, between 36 and 72% for Fe, Zn and Cu, and more than 100% for Co, Mo and Mn. In particular,
the elements Ca and Na have to be added from other sources. 相似文献
