This study assesses the biodegradation potential of a number of fatty amine derivatives in tests following the OECD guidelines for ready biodegradability. A number of methods are used to reduce toxicity and improve the bioavailability of the fatty amine derivatives in these tests. Alkyl-1,3-diaminopropanes and octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride are toxic to microorganisms at concentrations used in OECD ready biodegradability tests. The concentration of these fatty amine derivatives in the aqueous phase can be reduced by reacting humic, or lignosulphonic acids with the derivatives or through the addition of silica gel to the test bottles. Using these non-biodegradable substances, ready biodegradability test results were obtained with tallow-1,3-diaminopropane and octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride. Demonstration of the ready biodegradability of the water-insoluble dioctadecylamine under the prescribed standard conditions is almost impossible due to the limited bioavailability of this compound. However, ready biodegradability results were achieved by using very low initial test substance concentrations and by introducing an organic phase. The contents of the bottles used to assess the biodegradability of dioctadecylamine were always mixed. False negative biodegradability results obtained with the fatty amine derivatives studied are the result of toxic effects and/or limited bioavailability. The accuracy of biochemical and molecular prenatal diagnoses using chorionic villi as the fetal source was assessed by seven centres participating in the NICHD collaborative study on the safety and accuracy of chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis. Of 601 pregnancies studied, biochemical methods were used to determine the diagnosis in 283 fetuses at risk for 35 different metabolic disorders. Fifteen different lysosomal storage diseases accounted for 81 per cent of the biochemical prenatal diagnoses performed, with 57 per cent of these pregnancies at risk for Tay-Sachs disease. No errors were made in the biochemical diagnoses that predicted affected or unaffected fetuses. However, the diagnoses of certain disorders (e.g., mucopolysacchariodosis type IH, metachromatic leukodystrophy, and Krabbe disease) occasionally required confirmatory studies in cultured amniocytes because the enzyme results were inconclusive in direct and/or cultured villi or due to the presence of a pseudodeficiency allele. Of these, only the diagnosis of a fetus at risk for Krabbe disease remained inconclusive after special studies to discriminate between mutant and pseudodeficiency alleles. Recombinant DNA techniques were used to predict the diagnosis of 318 fetuses at risk for 16 different disorders in which the defective disease gene could be detected either directly or by linkage analysis to a nearby polymorphic marker. Of these, 32 per cent were for haemoglobinopathies, 25 per cent for cystic fibrosis, 24 per cent for Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy, and 7 per cent for haemophilias. Pregnancies at risk for known disorders with specific molecular lesions (e.g., sickle cell disease) were accurately diagnosed in direct and/or cultured villi. Diagnoses requiring analyses with closely linked polymorphic markers were occasionally uninformative or inconclusive. Maternal contamination was not reported in any biochemical or molecular-based diagnosis. The pollution of the atmosphere by sulfur dioxide is one of the gravest of all in public nuisance problems, especially in the industrial regions. A practically applicable method in industry for the removal of sulfur dioxide has been studied. The Kiyoura-T .I .T. process utilizes the oxidation method to convert S02 of the flue gas to S03 in the presence of vanadium oxide. A limited amount of water vapor present in the flue gas reacts with S03 to form H2SO4. Ammonia is then introduced to the gaseous mixture, which is now at the suitable temperature, to form ammonium sulfate. The principal deterrent of general acceptance of weak black liquor oxidation by mills pulping southern pine is the extensive foam produced during the oxidation of the liquor. The foam results from relatively high concentrations of fatty and rosin acid soaps remaining in the black liquor after roughly 75% of these compounds have been removed by skimming as marketable by-products. The foaming propensity of black liquor can be used to advantage to provide additional by-product recovery while the black liquor is being oxidized. Lead-rich solid industrial wastes were vitrified by the addition of glass formers in various concentrations, to produce non-toxic vitreous stabilized products that can be freely disposed or used as construction materials. Toxicity of both the as-received industrial solid waste and the stabilized products was determined using standard leaching test procedures. The chemically stable vitreous products were subjected to thermal annealing in order to investigate the extent of crystal separation that could occur during cooling of large pieces of glass. Leaching tests were repeated to investigate the relation between annealing process and chemical stability. X-ray, scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to identify the microstructure of stabilized products before and after thermal treatment.
