In systems where production is limited by the availability of a nutrient, nutrient input to and recycling within the system
is related to the resilience, or speed of recovery, of a system to its steady state following a disturbance. In particular,
it is shown that the return timeT
s
of the system to steady state, or the inverse of the resilience, is approximately equal to the mean turnover time of the
limiting nutrient in the system. From this relationship, it is possible to understand and predict how various properties of
food webs and their environments affect resilience. These properties include nutrient input rate, loss rate, size of the detritus
compartment, and trophic structure. The effects of these properties on resilience are described by using simple mathematical
models.
To test model predictions, experimental studies of the response of periphyton-dominated stream ecosystems to disturbance are
being conducted on a set of laboratory streams in which nutrient inputs and grazing intensity are regulated at different levels.
In streams without snail grazers (low-grazed streams), 90% recirculation of stream water to reduce nutrient inputs resulted
in longer turnover times (T
r
) of phosphorus within the stream compared with once-through flow. However, in streams with snail grazers (high-grazed streams),
there were no differences in phosphorus turnover time between once-through and partially recirculated treatments. Results
on the rate of recovery of periphyton from a flood/scour disturbance to each stream partially support the model prediction
of a positive relationship between ecosystem return time (T

Summary This paper examines the depletion of Nigeria's natural forest resources consequent upon exploitation without adequate conservation. It also examines plantation forestry as the government's strategy for replenishing the country's lumber resources. 129I is one of the more hazardous nuclides occurring in radioactive waste. In the form of I−, its most likely speciation, it is poorly sorbed on most geologic media. Several workers have suggested the use of silver to precipitate I− as the insoluble AgI, in a cemented waste form, or as a “getter”. The efficacy of this procedure is examined by experiment, in conjunction with thermodynamic predictions.The addition of AgNO3 to Portland cement leads to coprecipitation with C-S-H, with low Ag solubilities ( 10 μmg/L); 2–;3 orders of magnitude lower than predicted (from Ag2O). AgI is stable in these matrices, with low aqueous I concentrations (<2 mg/L). In 85% BFS-15% OPC pastes, AgI is unstable due to redox and complexation reactions, with much I− passing into solution; concentrations up to 900 mg/L were observed. It is shown that repository conditions, on closure, are also likely to induce solubilisation of I− from AgI. It is concluded that the use of Ag is unlikely to significantly improve the immobilisation properties of the near field for radioiodine. 相似文献

The distribution and impacts of different nitrogen pollutants are inextricably linked. To understand the problem fully, the interactions between the different pollutants need to be taken into account. This is particularly important when it comes to abatement techniques, since measures to reduce emissions of one nitrogen pollutant can often lead to an increase in another. This project represents a step towards greater understanding of these issues by linking together new and existing nitrogen flux models into a larger framework. Dissolved nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrate (NO3 -), and ammonium (NH4 +) concentrations in an agricultural field drain were intensively measured over the period of field nitrogen (N) fertilisation and for several weeks thereafter. Supersaturations of dissolved N2O were observed in field drain waters throughout the study. On entry to an open drainage ditch, concentrations of dissolved N2O rapidly decreased and a total N2O-N emission via this pathway of 13.2 g over the period of study (45 days) was calculated. This compared with a predicted emission of the order of 300 g, based on measured losses of NO3 - and NH4 + in the field drainage water, and the default IPCC emission factor of 0.01 kg N2O-N per kg Nentering rivers and estuaries. In contrast to widespread evidence of a clear relationship between the amount of N applied to agricultural land and subsequent direct N2O emission from the soil surface, the relationship between the amount of N2O in soil drainage waters and the amount of N applied was poor. We conclude that the complexity, both spatially and temporally, of the processes ultimately responsible for the amount of N2O in agricultural drainage waters make a straightforward relationship between N2O concentration and N application rate unlikely in all but the simplest of systems. 相似文献

It is well known that air pollution is one of the major factors affecting human health and the activities in a town. Among the various air pollutants an interesting one, especially for sunny climates, is the reactive O3. O3 varies significantly through the year; it is therefore very important to know the onset and the duration of the warm period of the year since at that time O3 concentrations increase significantly. In this work, an attempt was made to determine the onset of warm season of the year as well as its duration in various sites located in Northeastern Mediterranean. For this purpose, a fuzzy clustering method is used. The method was applied on the isobaric thickness between 1000 and 500 hPa for the period from 1974 to 1997. There is a growing recognition that knowledge of indigenous communities, based on accumulated observations and experience over time, is significant for sustainable environmental management in collaboration with modern scientific knowledge. A number of innovative policy initiatives are currently being implemented in New Zealand to enable indigenous Maori tribes and sub-tribes to rehabilitate and manage their local fisheries in accordance with customary values and practices. These policies are an important milestone from an historical perspective as they are meant to recognise and empower the role of Maori as Treaty partners. The fisheries management regime in New Zealand now provides for Maori representation at the local level within a co-management framework that enables local Maori communities to exercise their customary rights. These institutional arrangements have been crafted to facilitate Maori input, based on customary values and practices, to complement modern Western management practices for sustainable harvesting of marine resources. Nevertheless, the degree to which these initiatives constitute an adequate response to Maori Treaty aspirations is debatable. A major constraint in this respect is that the government is compelled to recognise the needs of other, economically and politically more dominant, non-Maori user-groups in allocating and managing access to fishery resources and the marine environment. 相似文献

Conventional surplus production models indicate that destruction of fish populations by overfishing is difficult, if not impossible, but catastrophic declines in abundance of exploited populations are common. Surplus production models also do not predict large continuing fluctuations in yield, but large fluctuations in yield are common. Conventional surplus production models assume that fisheries do not impact the population's capacity to increase, but changes in age structure or a decrease in age-specific fecundity resulting from fishing can decrease the coefficient of increase. A surplus production model is developed in which fishing reduces the capacity of a population to increase; the model is applied to describe the fluctuations observed in yield of lake herring (Coregonus artedii) from the upper Great Lakes. The fisheries of the Great Lakes were decimated by the combined effects of heavy fishing and a changing environment. For some species, yield increased to high levels and then the fisheries collapsed; for other species, yield and effort fluctuated greatly. 相似文献

The siting of facilities with undesirable environmental characteristics often leads to public conflict. Efforts to resolve the conflict and make siting decisions frequently exacerbate the problem. Environmental mediation, the process of negotiating an agreeable settlement, is an accepted approach to resolving conflict. This paper explores the use of incentive systems as a means of achieving equity in environmental mediation. Obnoxious and noxious characteristics of facilities are discussed as the basis of conflicts. Four types of incentives—mitigation, compensation, reward, and participation—are discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the utility and application of incentives for solving environmental conflicts. 相似文献
