There is currently considerable scientific interest in finding a chemical technique capable of predicting bioavailability; non-exhaustive extraction techniques (NEETs) offer such potential. Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD), a NEET, is further validated through the investigation of concentration ranges, differing soil types, and the presence of co-contaminants. This is the first study to demonstrate the utility of the HPCD-extraction technique to predict the microbial availability to phenanthrene across a wide concentration range and independent of soil-contaminant contact time (123 d). The efficacy of the HPCD-extraction technique for the estimation of PAH microbial availability in soil is demonstrated in the presence of co-contaminants that have been aged for the duration of the experiment together in the soil. Desorption dynamics are compared in co-contaminant and single-PAH contaminated spiked soils to demonstrate the occurrence of competitive displacement. Overall, a single HPCD-extraction technique proved accurate and reproducible for the estimation of PAH bioavailability from soil. 相似文献

A pilot-scale horizontal flow constructed wetland (HFCW) system planted with common reed (Phragmites sp.) was constructed to study how hydraulic loading rate (HLR), aspect ratio, water depth, and granular medium affect to the fate of several organic matter degradation intermediates namely, acetic acid (HAc), isovaleric acid (Isoval), and dimethylsulfide (DMS). ANOVA statistical analysis performed on the data set of 8 months of operation shows that the HLR and the water depth are two major factors that control the performance of HFCWs for the target analytes. A clear difference in the HFCW effluent concentrations was obtained according to water depth. Effluents of the shallow water depth contained lower DMS (1.05-1.44 microg l-1), HAc (7.91-10.9 mg l-1), and Isoval (0.11-0.15 mg l-1) concentrations than the deeper beds (DMS: 1.68-2.40 microg l-1; HAc: 9.29-14.4 mg l-1, and Isoval: 0.20-0.31 mg l-1). Such differences could be accounted to the different formation and consumption rates of the organic matter degradation intermediates, which is related with the redox potentials (E). Indeed, it could lead to different biochemical reactions of organic matter degradation according with the E value. HLR has a statistically significant influence on the effluent HAc, Isoval, and DMS concentrations. Seasonal variability of effluent HAc concentration shows that it is independent on the HAc loading. While the loading showed no seasonal pattern, the removal efficiency was clearly higher in cold months, which suggests a predominant internal production of HAc in HFCWs in the warm season from the accumulated organic particulate matter. Two important issues in the studies of harmful algae include ecological role of the toxic compounds and their fate through the food web. The aims of this study were to determine whether the production of domoic acid is a strategy evolved to avoid predation and the role of copepods in the fate of this toxic compound through the food web. The copepod Acartia clausi was fed with single and mixed cultures of the toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries and the non-toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima. Ingestion rate as a function of diatom abundance was the same for the toxic and non-toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species, indicating no selective feeding behaviour against P. multiseries. The toxins ingested by the copepods did not affect mortality, feeding behaviour, egg production and egg hatching of the copepods. Copepods assimilated the 4.8% of the total domoic acid ingested. Although the amount of toxins daily detoxificated by the copepods was 63.6%, the copepods accumulated domoic acid in their tissues. We conclude that domoic acid is not toxic for copepods and, probably for this reason, this toxin does not act as feeding deterrent for copepods. However, even though the production of domoic acid has apparently not evolved to deter predation, copepods may play an important role on the fate of this toxic compound through the marine food web. 相似文献

Floral scents are important information cues used to organize foraging-related tasks in honeybees. The waggle dance, apart
from encoding spatial information about food sources, might facilitate the transfer of olfactory information by increasing
the dissipation of volatiles brought back by successful foragers. By assuming that food scents are more intensive on specific
body parts of returning foragers, i.e., the posterior legs of pollen foragers and mouthparts of nectar foragers, we quantified
the interactions between hive mates and foragers during dances advertising different types of food sources. For natural sources,
a higher proportion of hive mates contacted the hind legs of pollen dancers (where the pollen loads were located) with their
heads compared to non-pollen dancers. On the other hand, the proportion of head-to-head contacts was higher for non-pollen
foragers during the waggle runs. When the food scent was manipulated, dancers collecting scented sugar solution had a higher
proportion of head-to-head contacts and a lower proportion around their hind legs compared to dancers collecting unscented
solution. The presence of food odors did not affect in-hive behaviors of dancers, but it increased the number of trophallaxes
in-between waggle runs (i.e., during circle phases). These results suggest that the honeybee dance facilitates the olfactory
information transfer between incoming foragers and hive mates, and we propose that excitatory displays in other social insect
species serve the same purpose. While recent empirical and theoretical findings suggested that the colony level foraging benefits
of the spatial information encoded in the waggle dance vary seasonally and with habitats, the role of the dance as a compound
signal not only indicating the presence of a profitable resource but also amplifying the information transfer regarding floral
