Lead (Pb) is a toxin that after childhood exposure poses a lifetime of health risks. One route of exposure is soil-Pb as a result of ∼12 million metric tons of Pb residue in paint and gasoline sold in the US during the 20th Century. Pb accumulated in soil of the community is a good predictor for blood Pb of children living there. This retrospective study compares the soil-Pb on Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) properties with adjacent private residential (RES) properties within a 0.8 km (0.5 mile) radius. The sample subset (n = 951) is from two soil-Pb surveys (total n = 9,493) conducted between 1989 and 2000. The properties were in both the inner city (CORE) and outlying (OUTER) communities. The data were analyzed using multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP). The soil-Pb results differ significantly (P-value < 0.001) on same-aged HANO properties at different locations; thus, year of construction does not give adequate explanation for the soil-Pb differences. HANO and RES soils are significantly more Pb contaminated in the CORE than in OUTER communities (P-value < 0.001). The CORE has many more years of traffic congestion than OUTER communities; therefore, the lead additives to gasoline, and not lead-based paint, best elucidate the differences of the soil-Pb footprint at HANO and RES properties in the CORE and OUTER communites. Currently HANO properties are being redeveloped with cleaner soil, but soil on RES properties in the CORE of New Orleans remains a large source of Pb (median = 707 mg/kg in this study) for human exposure, especially children.  相似文献

Home ranges of animals are generally structured by the selective use of resource-bearing patches that comprise habitat. Based on this concept, home ranges of animals estimated from location data are commonly used to infer habitat relationships. Because home ranges estimated from animal locations are largely continuous in space, the resource-bearing patches selected by an animal from a fragmented distribution of patches would be difficult to discern; unselected patches included in the home range estimate would bias an understanding of important habitat relationships. To evaluate potential for this bias, we generated simulated home ranges based on optimal selection of resource-bearing patches across a series of simulated resource distributions that varied in the spatial continuity of resources. For simulated home ranges where selected patches were spatially disjunct, we included interstitial, unselected cells most likely to be traveled by an animal moving among selected patches. We compared characteristics of the simulated home ranges with and without interstitial patches to evaluate how insights derived from field estimates can differ from actual characteristics of home ranges, depending on patchiness of landscapes. Our results showed that contiguous home range estimates could lead to misleading insights on the quality, size, resource content, and efficiency of home ranges, proportional to the spatial discontinuity of resource-bearing patches. We conclude the potential bias of including unselected, largely irrelevant patches in the field estimates of home ranges of animals can be high, particularly for home range estimators that assume uniform use of space within home range boundaries. Thus, inferences about the habitat relationships that ultimately define an animal's home range can be misleading where animals occupy landscapes with patchily distributed resources.  相似文献

The EQuilibrium Criterion (EQC) model developed and published in 1996 was recently revised to include improved treatment of input partitioning and reactivity data, temperature dependence and an easier sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. This New EQC model was used to evaluate the multimedia, fugacity-based fate of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5; CAS No. 541-02-6) in the environment over a temperature range of 1–25 °C. In addition, Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis was used to quantitatively determine the influence of temperature and input partitioning and reactivity data on the behavior of D5 under various emission scenarios. Results indicated that emission mode was the most influential factor determining the fate and distribution of D5 in the model environment. When emitted to air and soil, D5 partitioned to and remained in the air compartment where rates of removal from degradation and advection processes were relatively rapid. In contrast, D5 emitted to water resulted in a substantial mass fraction of D5 being accumulated in the sediment compartment, where rates of removal from degradation and advection processes were slow. The mass distributions and fate of D5 in the model environment were strongly influenced by multiple input parameters, including temperature, the mode of emission (especially emission rate to water), KOC and half-life in air. As temperature decreased from 25 °C to 1 °C, KOC and half-life in air became increasingly more influential such that the mass distribution of D5 increased in air and decreased in sediment, resulting in decreased overall persistence.  相似文献

Since the early seventies, hospital waste incineration has been an ever increasing issue in Alberta because of the emissions of particles, hydrochloric acid and chlorine which result from burning plastic-rich hospital waste. These stack emissions were measured from various hospital incinerators in the Province of Alberta and most were found to be above the standards adopted by the Alberta Department of Environment. Compliance with particulate and HC1 emission standards are mandatory in order to receive final approval for a hospital incinerator in Alberta. Adequate control measures are available to meet Alberta Environment requirements for hospital incinerator emissions.  相似文献

The adsorption behavior of 241Am, 60Co, 137Cs and 85Sr in the presence and absence of chelating ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ethylenediaminediacetic acid, hydroxyethyliminodiacetic acid, iminodiaceiticacid and methyliminodiacetic acid) was investigated. Sorption affinity in the absence of chelating ligands followed: Am(III) > Co(II) > Cs(I) > Sr(II). The presence of chelating ligands generally had little effect on sorption of 85Sr and 137Cs with Kd values 110 and 690 mL g−1, respectively. But at 0.02 M of ethylenediaminetetraacetic or hydroxyethyliminodiacetic, the Kd decreased to 5 or 63 mL g−1, respectively, where thermochemical modeling indicated almost all 85Sr is complexed with these ligands. The Kd values for 241Am and 60Co generally decreased with increasing chelating agent concentrations. In notable cases, the Kd values for Am increased at specific concentrations of 10−3 M for IDA, MIDA and 10−4 M for EDDA. This is proposed to be due to formation of a ternary surface complex.  相似文献

The EQuilibrium Criterion (EQC) model developed and published in 1996 has been widely used for screening level evaluations of the multimedia, fugacity-based environmental fate of organic chemicals for educational, industrial, and regulatory purposes. Advances in the science of chemical partitioning and reactivity and the need for more rigorous regulatory evaluations have resulted in a need to update the model. The New EQC model is described which includes an improved treatment of input partitioning and reactivity data, temperature dependence and an easier sensitivity and uncertainty analysis but uses the same multi-level approach, equations and environmental parameters as in the original version. A narrative output is also produced. The New EQC model, which uses a Microsoft Excel platform, is described and applied in detail to decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5; CAS No. 541-02-6). The implications of these results for the more detailed exposure and risk assessment of D5 are discussed. The need for rigorous evaluation and documentation of the input parameters is outlined.  相似文献

The feasibility of reducing children's exposure to lead (Pb) polluted soil in New Orleans is tested. Childcare centers (median = 48 children) are often located in former residences. The extent of soil Pb was determined by selecting centers in both the core and outlying areas. The initial 558 mg/kg median soil Pb (range 14-3692 mg/kg) decreased to median 4.1 mg/kg (range 2.2-26.1 mg/kg) after intervention with geotextile covered by 15 cm of river alluvium. Pb loading decreased from a median of 4887 μg/m(2) (454 μg/ft(2)) range 603-56650 μg/m(2) (56-5263 μg/ft(2)) to a median of 398 μg/m(2) (37 μg/ft(2)) range 86-980 μg/m(2) (8-91 μg/ft(2)). Multi-Response Permutation Procedures indicate similar (P-values = 0.160-0.231) soil Pb at childcare centers compared to soil Pb of nearby residential communities. At ~$100 per child, soil Pb and surface loading were reduced within hours, advancing an upstream intervention conceptualization about Pb exposure prevention.  相似文献

In spite of the controversy that they have generated, neutral models provide ecologists with powerful tools for creating dynamic predictions about beta-diversity in ecological communities. Ecologists can achieve an understanding of the assembly rules operating in nature by noting when and how these predictions are met or not met. This is particularly valuable for those groups of organisms that are challenging to study under natural conditions (e.g., bacteria and fungi). Here, we focused on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities and performed an extensive literature search that allowed us to synthesize the information in 19 data sets with the minimal requisites for creating a null hypothesis in terms of community dissimilarity expected under neutral dynamics. In order to achieve this task, we calculated the first estimates of neutral parameters for several AMF communities from different ecosystems. Communities were shown either to be consistent with neutrality or to diverge or converge with respect to the levels of compositional dissimilarity expected under neutrality. These data support the hypothesis that divergence occurs in systems where the effect of limited dispersal is overwhelmed by anthropogenic disturbance or extreme biological and environmental heterogeneity, whereas communities converge when systems have the potential for niche divergence within a relatively homogeneous set of environmental conditions. Regarding the study cases that were consistent with neutrality, the sampling designs employed may have covered relatively homogeneous environments in which the effects of dispersal limitation overwhelmed minor differences among AMF taxa that would lead to environmental filtering. Using neutral models we showed for the first time for a soil microbial group the conditions under which different assembly processes may determine different patterns of beta-diversity. Our synthesis is an important step showing how the application of general ecological theories to a model microbial taxon has the potential to shed light on the assembly and ecological dynamics of communities.  相似文献

Federal and state regulations are being promulgated under the Clean Air Act to reduce hazardous air emissions from livestock operations. Few data are available on emissions from livestock facilities in the USA and the management practices that may minimize emissions. The objective of this study was to measure seasonal and bedding impacts on ammonia emissions from tie-stall dairy barns located in central Wisconsin. Four chambers each housed four Holstein dairy heifers (approximately 17 mo of age; body weights, 427-522 kg) for three 28-d trial periods corresponding to winter, summer, and fall. A 4x4 Latin Square statistical design was used to evaluate four bedding types (manure solids, chopped newspaper, pine shavings, and chopped wheat straw) in each chamber for a 4-d ammonia monitoring period. Average ammonia-N emissions (g heifer(-1) d(-1)) during summer (20.4) and fall (21.0) were similar and twice the emissions recorded during winter (10.1). Ammonia-N emissions accounted for approximately 4 to 7% of consumed feed N, 4 to 10% of excreted N, and 9 to 20% of manure ammonical N. Cooler nighttime temperatures did not result in lower ammonia emissions than daytime temperatures. Ammonia emissions (g heifer(-1) d(-1)) from chambers that contained manure solids (20.0), newspaper (18.9), and straw (18.9) were similar and significantly greater than emissions using pine shavings (15.2). Chamber N balances, or percent difference between the inputs feed N and bedding N, and the outputs manure N, body weight N, and ammonia N were 105, 90, and 89% for the winter, summer, and fall trials, respectively. Relatively high chamber N balances and favorable comparisons of study data with published values of ammonia emissions, feed N intake, and manure N excretion provided confidence in the accuracy of the study results.  相似文献
