Chemical composition data for fine and coarse particles collected in Phoenix, AZ, were analyzed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). The objective was to identify the possible aerosol sources at the sampling site. PMF uses estimates of the error in the data to provide optimum data point scaling and permits a better treatment of missing and below-detection-limit values. It also applies nonnegativity constraints to the factors. Two sets of fine particle samples were collected by different samplers. Each of the resulting fine particle data sets was analyzed separately. For each fine particle data set, eight factors were obtained, identified as (1) biomass burning characterized by high concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and K; (2) wood burning with high concentrations of Na, K, OC, and EC; (3) motor vehicles with high concentrations of OC and EC; (4) nonferrous smelting process characterized by Cu, Zn, As, and Pb; (5) heavy-duty diesel characterized by high EC, OC, and Mn; (6) sea-salt factor dominated by Na and Cl; (7) soil with high values for Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe; and (8) secondary aerosol with SO4(-2) and OC that may represent coal-fired power plant emissions. For the coarse particle samples, a five-factor model gave source profiles that are attributed to be (1) sea salt, (2) soil, (3) Fe source/motor vehicle, (4) construction (high Ca), and (5) coal-fired power plant. Regression of the PM mass against the factor scores was performed to estimate the mass contributions of the resolved sources. The major sources for the fine particles were motor vehicles, vegetation burning factors (biomass and wood burning), and coal-fired power plants. These sources contributed most of the fine aerosol mass by emitting carbonaceous particles, and they have higher contributions in winter. Dynamics of airborne mercury deposited onto catchment areas is investigated within the framework of a simulation model. Model results show that, for a particular atmospheric deposition rate, significant interannual variability in mercury transport flux in catchments is caused by climatology and corresponding differences in catchment soil loss rates; in comparison to the normal year, runoff flux increased by a factor of 2-3 for the wet year (rainfall 35% above normal) while for the dry year (rainfall 18% below normal) runoff flux decreased by factors of 5-7. The interaction of parameters describing soil type, topography and vegetation cover causes variability in both transport and emission fluxes among catchments; as soil loss rate increases by a factor of 5 due to variations in these parameters among the examined catchments, annual average transport flux increases by a factor of 3; and annual average emission flux of mercury (as Hg0) from soil to the atmosphere decreases by a factor of 2 due to the decreased levels of soil mercury associated with catchment soil loss increases. Seasonal variability of transport flux is associated with seasonal changes in precipitation and soil loss rates while seasonal changes of emission flux are primarily due to changes in soil moisture regime and temperature. 50% effective inhibition concentration 48h-EC50 of 40 substituted benzenes to the algae (Scenedesmus obliquus) was determined. The energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (E(LUMO)) was calculated by the quantum chemical method MOPAC6.0-AM1. By using E(LUMO) and the hydrophobicity parameter log K(OW) the quantitative structure-activity relationship model (QSAR) was developed: log1/EC50=0.272 logK(OW) - 0.659E(LUMO) + 2.54, R2 = 0.793, S.E. = 0.316, F = 71.07, n = 40. A series of equations were obtained about the measured EC50 values of different subclasses of compounds. For those compounds containing double -NO2, their toxicity may be related chiefly to the intracellular reduction of -NO2 obtaining electron, while for anilines and phenols, K(OW) contributes most to the QSAR and E(LUMO) very little. 相似文献

Germination rate and root elongation, as a rapid phytotoxicity test method, possess several advantages, such as sensitivity, simplicity, low cost and suitability for unstable chemicals or samples. These advantages made them suitable for developing a large-scale phytotoxicity database and especially applicable for developing quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) to study mechanisms of phytotoxicity. In this paper, the comparative inhibition of germination rate and root elongation of Cucumis sativus by selected halogen-substituted phenols and anilines were determined. The suitability of germination rate and root elongation as phytotoxicity endpoints was evaluated. Excellent reproducibility and stability of germination rate and root elongation in the control test, relatively greater sensitivity and similar dose–response relations for all tested compounds were observed. These results together with those of a 2-day test were used to demonstrate the suitability of this phytotoxicity test method. A QSAR was developed for the phytotoxicity mode of action of the tested compounds to C. sativus seeds. Models that combined the logarithm of 1-octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (Elumo) were developed for both germination rate inhibition and root elongation inhibition. The results of these studies indicate that phytotoxicity of substituted phenols and anilines to C. sativus seeds could be explained by a polar narcosis mechanism. This paper will promote the application of germination rate and root elongation method and the development of large-scale phytotoxicity database, which will provide the fundamental data for QSAR and ecological risk assessment of organic pollutants. 相似文献

Comparison of two biological treatment processes using attached-growth biomass for sanitary landfill leachate treatment 总被引:19,自引:0,他引:19
The objective of this investigation was to compare two biological systems using attached-growth biomass, for treatment of leachates generated in a typical municipal solid waste sanitary landfill. A moving-bed biofilm process, which is a relatively new type of biological treatment system, has been examined. It is based on the use of small, free-floating polymeric (polyurethane) elements, while biomass is being grown and attached as biofilm on the surface of these porous carriers. A granular activated carbon (GAC) moving-bed biofilm process was also tested. This method combines both physico-chemical and biological removal mechanisms for the removal of pollutants. The presence of GAC offers a suitable porous media, which is able to adsorb both organic matter and ammonia, as well as to provide an appropriate surface onto which biomass can be attached and grown. A laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was used for the examination of both carriers. The effects of different operation strategies on the efficiency of these biological treatment processes were studied in order to optimize their performance, especially for the removal of nitrogen compounds and of biodegradable organic matter. It has been found that these processes were able to remove nitrogen content almost completely and simultaneously, the removal of organic matter (expressed as BOD5 and COD), color and turbidity were sufficiently achieved. 相似文献

Ever-increasing heavy metal accumulation in the urban environment of Guangzhou, the largest light industrial production base and one of the most rapidly developing cities in China, poses a serious threat to environment as well as to human health in the region. As a sink or source, urban deposits are good indicators of the level and extent of heavy metal accumulation in the surface environment. The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the distribution of heavy metal contamination in the urban environment of Guangzhou. It was based on a systematic sampling of road dusts and corresponding gully sediments along major roads running mainly through commercial and residential to industrial districts of the city. In addition to road dusts and gully sediments, ceiling dusts from the Pearl River Tunnel were also collected to characterize anthropogenic emissions dominated by traffic-related activities. In general, the level of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn contaminations were more severe on the industrialized side of Guangzhou than on the western side where heavy traffic and industrial activities were limited. The primary determinants of the level of heavy metal contamination and the distribution of this contamination in the urban environment of Guangzhou were the site-specific conditions of its urban setting, particularly the types of industries, the nature of the traffic flow, sample residence times and variations in grain size of the particulate contaminants. This study highlights the complexity of the urban system and indicates that in just such a system individual urban components should be interlinked to assess the long-term environmental and health effects of heavy metal contamination. Among the heavy metals tested – Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn – the level of Zn contamination was the most severe and widespread, and thus requires immediate attention. 相似文献

Florasulam is a three azole and pyrimidine sulfonamide herbicide, mainly used for weeds prevention and control in winter wheat fields. The main purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of different doses of Florasulam on soil residues and on the enzymatic activity of wheat cultivated in drylands, and to provide the theoretical basis for a scientific use of florasulam. Five doses (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 mL/667 m2) of Florasulam were applied in order to detect differences in soil residue content and enzymatic activities. Soil residues and enzymatic activities (catalase, phosphatase, urease, dehydrogenase) were measured and analyzed after the 5 different doses of Florasulam were processed. The residual amount of Florasulam in the soils decreased gradually with the growth phase of wheat, and was lower than that of 0.01 mg/kg. The residual amount of Florasulam in different soil layers gradually decreased with the increase of soil thickness. The enzymatic activity of soils treated with Florasulam was basically T3 > T2 > T1 > CK > T4, where T3 was the highest, whereas T4 could inhibit the enzymatic activity. Under these experimental conditions, in order to decrease soil pollution and lower Florasulam residues, it is recommended to apply Florasulam at a concentration range of 30 to 45 mL/667 m2 © 2018 Science Press. This paper aimed to find an efficient bacterium for decolorizing azo dyes. A strain which could decolorize Congo Red efficiently was isolated from Congo Red. The strain was identified as Paenibacillus dendritiformis GGJ7 (GGJ7, in short) by 16S rRNA gene sequence (NCBI accession No. KY655213). Strain GGJ7 was applied to the decolorization of azo dyes in this research, and influencing factors of decolorization were investigated, including diverse nutritional conditions, culture conditions (pH, temperature, oxygen conditions), and various dyes. The results demonstrated that the decolorization rate of Congo Red by strain GGJ7 was much higher than that of the other eight strains (e.g., YRJ1, YRJ2 etc.) in our previous work. The optimal conditions for Congo Red decolorization were 25 g/L LB broth as nutrient source, 30 °C, pH 7, and an anaerobic environment. The mechanism of decolorization was mainly biodegradation, and the decolorization process of strain GGJ7 was conformed to the first-class kinetics model: -ln (At /A0) = 0.6058t - 0.1082. For different azo dyes, the decolorization rate was up to 95%. Strain GGJ7 only needed 1 h to decolorize 50 mg/L Methyl Orange, 25 mg/L Croceine Scarlet, and 25 mg/L Methyl Red, needed 3 h to decolorize 50 mg/L Orange G and 50 mg/L Orange G6, and needed 4 h to decolorize 50 mg/L Congo Red. The growth of Cladophora spp. is vigorous in the field, but not good under indoor culture conditions. In order to promote the study on ecology, water environment treatment characteristics, and the development and utilization of Cladophora, the effects of three different culture methods (standing, ventilating, water flowing + ventilating) on biomass, morphology, and photosynthetic activity of C. oligoclona were compared in order to find a suitable method for its indoor culture. The results showed that the culture method of water flowing + ventilating could effectively promote C. oligoclona biomass accumulation; the morphologies in the three culture methods were different. C. oligoclona with increased single cell length and reduced cell diameter was found in the culture method involving water flowing + ventilating; in this method, the length of the main branch and branch of the cell, plant height, and branch length of C. oligoclona were significantly higher than that in the standing and ventilating culture methods (P < 0.05). C. oligoclona cultured in the water flowing + ventilating method also showed a higher photosynthetic activity. In conclusion, among the three culture methods, the water flowing + ventilating culture method is the most suitable for the indoor culturing of C. oligoclona; this method can also provide a technical reference for the further indoor mass culture of C. oligoclona. © 2018 Science Press.
