This paper evaluates the speciation and partitioning of mercury in two Spanish pulverised coal combustion power plants (PP1 and PP2), equipped with wet limestone-based flue gas desulphurisation facilities (FGD) operating with forced oxidation and re-circulation of FGD water streams. These plants are fed with coal (PP1) and coal/pet-coke blends (PP2) with different mercury contents. The behaviour, partitioning and speciation of Hg were found to be similar during the combustion processes but different in the FGD systems of the two power plants. A high proportion (86-88%) of Hg escaped the electrostatic precipitator in gaseous form, Hg2+ being the predominant mercury species (68-86%) to enter the FGD. At this point, a relatively high total Hg retention (72% and 65%) was achieved in the PP1 and PP2 (2007) FGD facilities respectively. However, during the second sampling campaign for PP2 (2008), the mercury removal achieved by the FGD was much lower (26%). Lab-scale tests point to liquid/gas ratio as the main parameter affecting oxidised mercury capture in the scrubber. The partitioning of the gaseous mercury reaching the FGD system in the wastes and by-products differed. In the low mercury input power plant (PP1) most of the mercury (67%) was associated with the FGD gypsum. Moreover in PP2 a significant proportion of the gaseous mercury reaching the FGD system remained in the aqueous phase (45%) in the 2007 sampling campaign while most of it escaped in 2008 (74%). This may be attributed to the scrubber operating conditions and the different composition and chemistry of the scrubber solution probably due to the use of an additive.  相似文献

Increasing evidence confirms that elemental carbon (EC) is not only a light-absorbing constituent that warms the atmosphere but also a significant environmental pollutant. Investigations were conducted to identify carbonaceous pollution signatures in road dusts and urban soils and to evaluate potential sources in Xi'an. Average concentrations of EC, char-EC, and soot-EC in soils were 0.90, 0.51, and 0.39 mg g?1, respectively, a little higher than or comparable to prior studies on the Loess Plateau. Vertical profiles in soils revealed soot-EC concentrations from pre-industrialized samples close to ~0.20 mg g?1, while EC and char-EC varied widely, with no distinct pattern. Enrichment factor analysis indicated that EC, char-EC, and soot-EC in road dusts were all elevated by an order of magnitude. The spatial distribution of total EC, char-EC, and soot-EC in road dusts revealed close correspondence with human activities such as coal combustion and vehicle emissions. The average char-EC/soot-EC ratio was 1.66 for road dusts, suggesting that the main sources of carbonaceous particles are local coal combustion and vehicle emissions. The study demonstrated that EC, char-EC, and soot-EC levels in road dusts are effective indicators of anthropogenic pollution.  相似文献

New mathematical and laboratory methods have been developed for simulating groundwater flow and solute transport in karst aquifers having conduits imbedded in a porous medium, such as limestone. The Stokes equations are used to model the flow in the conduits and the Darcy equation is used for the flow in the matrix. The Beavers–Joseph interface boundary conditions are adopted to describe the flow exchange at the interface boundary between the two domains. A laboratory analog is used to simulate the conduit and matrix domains of a karst aquifer. The conduit domain is located at the bottom of the transparent plexiglas laboratory analog and glass beads occupy the remaining space to represent the matrix domain. Water flows into and out of the two domains separately and each has its own supply and outflow reservoirs. Water and solute are exchanged through an interface between the two domains. Pressure transducers located within the matrix and conduit domains of the analog provide data that is processed and stored in digital format. Dye tracing experiments are recorded using time-lapse imaging. The data and images produced are analyzed by a spatial analysis program. The experiments provide not only hydraulic head distribution but also capture solute front images and mass exchange measurements between the conduit and matrix domains. In the experiment, we measure and record pressures, and quantify flow rates and solute transport. The results present a plausible argument that laboratory analogs can characterize groundwater water flow, solute transport, and mass exchange between the conduit and matrix domains in a karst aquifer. The analog validates the predictions of a numerical model and demonstrates the need of laboratory analogs to provide verification of proposed theories and the calibration of mathematical models.  相似文献

Chicken organs, animal feed, droppings, and ambient air were sampled at a farm in Beijing to determine the concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and metabolites (DDTs). Mean fresh weight concentrations of HCHs and DDTs were 0.122 ± 0.061 ng/g and 0.051 ± 0.038 ng/g in the muscles. These values are 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than those reported in China in 1980. Contaminated feed was the main source of HCHs and DDTs. Only 12.8% of HCH and 3.3% of DDT of the amount consumed were excreted. Accumulated quantities of HCHs and DDTs increased during growth. However, concentrations of HCHs and DDTs did not increase because of dilution from rapid growth. Based on the observed residual levels in mature chicken and the average diet of residents of China, the contributions from chicken and egg consumption to per capita daily intake of HCHs and DDTs were 487% and 88% of those of fish consumption.  相似文献

Average 21st century concentrations of urban air pollutants linked to cardiorespiratory disease are not declining, and commonly exceed legal limits. Even below such limits, health effects are being observed and may be related to transient daytime peaks in pollutant concentrations. With this in mind, we analyse >52,000 hourly urban background readings of PM10 and pollutant gases throughout 2007 at a European town with legal annual average concentrations of common pollutants, but with a documented air pollution-related cardiorespiratory health problem, and demonstrate the hourly variations in PM10, SO2, NOx, CO and O3. Back-trajectory analysis was applied to track the arrival of exotic PM10 intrusions, the main controls on air pollutants were identified, and the typical hourly pattern on ambient concentrations during 2007 was profiled. Emphasis was placed on “worst case” data (>90th percentile), when health effects are likely to be greatest. The data show marked daytime variations in pollutants result from rush-hour traffic-related pollution spikes, midday industrial SO2 maxima, and afternoon O3 peaks. African dust intrusions enhance PM10 levels at whatever hour, whereas European PM incursions produce pronounced evening peaks due to their transport direction (across an industrial traffic corridor). Transient peak profiling moves us closer to the reality of personal outdoor exposure to inhalable pollutants in a given urban area. We argue that such an approach to monitoring data potentially offers more to air pollution health effect studies than using only 24 h or annual averages.  相似文献

Speciation plays a crucial role in elemental mobility. However, trace level selenium (Se) speciation analyses in aqueous samples from acidic environments are hampered due to adsorption of the analytes (i.e. selenate, selenite) on precipitates. Such solid phases can form during pH adaptation up till now necessary for chromatographic separation. Thermodynamic calculations in this study predicted that a pH < 4 is needed to prevent precipitation of Al and Fe phases. Therefore, a speciation method with a low pH eluent that matches the natural sample pH of acid rain-soil interaction samples from Etna volcano was developed. With a mobile phase containing 20 mM ammonium citrate at pH 3, selenate and selenite could be separated in different acidic media (spiked water, rain, soil leachates) in <10 min with a LOQ of 0.2 μg L−1 using 78Se for detection. Applying this speciation analysis to study acid rain-soil interaction using synthetic rain based on H2SO4 and soil samples collected at the flanks of Etna volcano demonstrated the dominance of selenate over selenite in leachates from samples collected close to the volcanic craters. This suggests that competitive behavior with sulfate present in acid rain might be a key factor in Se mobilization. The developed speciation method can significantly contribute to understand Se cycling in acidic, Al/Fe rich environments.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the characteristics, provenance, and particle-related pollution of an intense dustfall event that occurred in Beijing on 16–17 April 2006. Satellite images reveal that the aeolian dust originated in northeastern Alxa League of Inner Mongolia and passed southeastward across northern Ningxia, middle Inner Mongolia, northern Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces. The dust then moved out of continental China in the vicinity of Beijing and Tianjin. The floating dust led to severe air pollution in Huhhot, Datong, and Beijing. We measured dustfall by collecting dust samples, investigated particle morphology, and calculated the mass medium diameter (MMD) of the dustfall using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Major elements and mineral content of the dust particles were determined by electron probe and powder X-ray diffractometer, respectively. The relative abundance of dustfall during this event was 12.5–15.0 g m?2, making up about 10% of the total annual dustfall in Beijing. Dustfall amounted to 205 thousand tons in Beijing, the largest amount observed in recent years. The dust particles were mostly angular, subangular and subrounded in morphology, and the MMD was nearly 12 μm. Particles <10 μm accounted for 54.7% by number, but fine sand particles (larger than 50 μm) made up 53.7% by volume. Particles with diameters larger than 20 μm made up of the predominant volume of the samples (90.35%). Hence, this dustfall event was characterized by a high content of fine sand and coarse silt particles. The principal elements in the dust particles were C, O, Si, Al, Fe, and Ca, whereas the major minerals were quartz, Na-feldspar, calcite, and clay minerals.  相似文献

Measurements in the exhaust plume of a petrol-driven motor car showed that molecular cluster ions of both signs were present in approximately equal amounts. The emission rate increased sharply with engine speed while the charge symmetry remained unchanged. Measurements at the kerbside of nine motorways and five city roads showed that the mean total cluster ion concentration near city roads (603 cm?3) was about one-half of that near motorways (1211 cm?3) and about twice as high as that in the urban background (269 cm?3). Both positive and negative ion concentrations near a motorway showed a significant linear increase with traffic density (R2 = 0.3 at p < 0.05) and correlated well with each other in real time (R2 = 0.87 at p < 0.01). Heavy duty diesel vehicles comprised the main source of ions near busy roads. Measurements were conducted as a function of downwind distance from two motorways carrying around 120–150 vehicles per minute. Total traffic-related cluster ion concentrations decreased rapidly with distance, falling by one-half from the closest approach of 2 m to 5 m of the kerb. Measured concentrations decreased to background at about 15 m from the kerb when the wind speed was 1.3 m s?1, this distance being greater at higher wind speed. The number and net charge concentrations of aerosol particles were also measured. Unlike particles that were carried downwind to distances of a few hundred metres, cluster ions emitted by motor vehicles were not present at more than a few tens of metres from the road.  相似文献
