In this paper, we review those data which have recently become available for brominated flame retardants (particularly the brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)) in samples from the European environment. Environmental compartments studied comprise the atmosphere, sediments and soils, sewage sludges, and a variety of biological samples and food chains. This is currently a very active research area, and we cite over 70 studies reported in the literature during 2003-04. Findings include that the input of BDEs (especially BDE209) to the Baltic Sea by atmospheric deposition now exceeds that of PCBs by a factor of almost 40 times. Sewage sludge samples from both industrial and background locations show concentrations of BDEs, HBCD and tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A) that are of a similar order, indicating that the major source is from diffuse leaching from products into wastewater streams from users, households and industries generally. Point-sources from industries using BFRs (e.g. the textile industry) also generate local hot-spots. Sediment core studies identified the presence of two of the three PBDE formulations. The penta-mix formulation was clearly present from the beginning of the 1970s, but the deca-mix only appeared in the late 1970s. BDE183, BDE209 and HBCD were detected in peregrine falcons from Sweden and other birds feeding on terrestrial food chains. BDEs are found widely distributed in fish, including those from high mountain lakes in Europe, as a consequence of long-range atmospheric transport and deposition. A temporal trend study in archived freeze-dried mussels from the Seine estuary, France, indicated an exponential increase in BDE concentrations during the period 1982-1993, which levelled off in 1999 and 2001 and then began to decline after 2002. HBCD was detected in liver and blubber samples from harbour seals and harbour porpoises from the Wadden and North Seas, though very few animals yielded positive values for TBBP-A. There are difficulties in comparing data on summation operatorBDE from studies in which different suites of BDE congeners have been determined, and we suggest a common suite which will allow the study of all three commercial PBDE formulations. 相似文献

We used microsatellite genetic markers to investigate adult population structure and the formation of a new year-class in
Sebastes mystinus (blue rockfish). Since S. mystinus may live as long as 45 years and reach reproductive age at approximately 5 years, the adult population may contain as many
as eight generations of reproductive adults. We investigated whether the juveniles of the 2000 year-class and the adult population
were genetically homogeneous along the California coast. We sampled approximately 100 juveniles from three sites, two sites
along the Monterey Peninsula (Carmel and Monterey) in central California and one at Fort Ross in northern California, and
approximately 50 adult S. mystinus from five sites throughout the population center. The adult sampling spanned approximately 700 km from the northern Channel
Islands to Fort Bragg. The juveniles showed significant heterogeneity in allele frequencies among distant locations and genetic
homogeneity among adjacent locations. In contrast, the adults showed genetic homogeneity over large distances (San Miguel
Island to Fort Bragg), indicating little limitation of gene flow in this region. Allele frequencies of juveniles differed
from adult samples and in some cases reduced genetic diversity indicative of sweepstakes recruitment (small sample of the
adult reproductive potential). The genetic structure of the 2000 year-class suggests that despite a genetically homogenous
adult population, settled juveniles can be genetically heterogeneous along the California coast. The results also suggest
that the adults, with several year-classes, are capable of maintaining a panmictic population despite the genetic distinctiveness

The host choice and sex allocation decisions of a foraging female parasitoid will have an enormous influence on the life-history
characteristics of her offspring. The pteromalid Pachycrepoideus vindemiae is a generalist idiobiont pupal parasitoid of many species of cyclorrhaphous Diptera. Wasps reared in Musca domestica were larger, had higher attack rates and greater male mating success than those reared in Drosophila melanogaster. In no-choice situations, na?ve female P. vindemiae took significantly less time to accept hosts conspecific with their natal host. Parasitoids that emerged from M. domestica pupae spent similar amounts of time ovipositing in both D. melanogaster and M. domestica. Those parasitoids that had emerged from D. melanogaster spent significantly longer attacking M. domestica pupae. The host choice behaviour of female P. vindemiae was influenced by an interaction between natal host and experience. Female P. vindemiae reared in M. domestica only showed a preference among hosts when allowed to gain experience attacking M. domestica, preferentially attacking that species. Similarly, female parasitoids reared on D. melanogaster only showed a preference among hosts when allowed to gain experience attacking D. melanogaster, again preferentially attacking that species. Wasp natal host also influenced sex allocation behaviour. While wasps from
both hosts oviposited more females in the larger host, M. domestica, wasps that emerged from M. domestica had significantly more male-biased offspring sex ratios. These results indicate the importance of learning and natal host
size in determining P. vindemiae attack rates, mating success, host preference and sex allocation behaviour, all critical components of parasitoid fitness.

Growth and moulting of Neomysis integer (Crustacea: Mysidacea) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The growth and moulting of Neomysis integer (Leach) was investigated in the field and the laboratory. In the Ythan estuary, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, monthly samples taken from November 1976 to October 1978 revealed that the summer generation juveniles and mature individuals grew at a rate of 4 to 5 mm and 1 to 2 mm monthly, respectively. The winter generation had a growth rate of 3 to 4 mm monthly for juveniles and about 1 mm for mature individuals; during the winter there was a period of 3 mo when growth was almost completely stopped. Mysids reared in the laboratory on Artemia sp. nauplii had an average daily growth rate of 0.06 mm at 9°C and 0.09 mm at 16°C. The growth factors of N. integer ranged from 3 to 17% for mature and immature individuals, respectively. Intermoult periods ranged from 3 to 7 d in immature mysids to 12 to 18 d in mature mysids. Average laboratory growth curves calculated from information on growth factors and intermoult periods indicate that at 9°C (winter generation) it takes N. integer 277 d to grow to be a 15 mm mature individual, whereas at 16°C (summer generation) it takes 188 d. Cadmium contamination in the agricultural soil of the region Leipzig-Halle was determined at 63 sites covering an area of ca. 7 000 km2. Normalization according to lutum and organic matter lead to effective exposure values; their distribution was compared with NOEC data taken from literature. The deposition of heavy metals bound to air dust and their ecological effects depend, to a large degree, on particle size, which influences the transport processes in the environment. To estimate the size range of the particles mainly taken up by the pine needles, concentration gradients along a sector leeward of Leipzig were modelled according toGauss plume calculations. Summary In this study, we combine both field and laboratory experiments to address the effects of female preference for certain call characteristics on a large-male mating advantage in the treefrog H. chrysoscelis. In laboratory-choice experiments, females always chose the call with the lower fundamental frequency when call rate and call intensity were held constant and the difference in frequency between the two calls was 15%. The lower frequency call was preferred by 8 out of 12 females when the difference in fundamental frequency was 7.4%. These results are consistent with field comparisons of the size of unmated males calling within 2 m of a mated male: Male body size was negatively correlated with fundamental frequency and the greater the size difference, the more likely that the larger male mated. In field choice experiments, females preferred males with higher call rates. Since size differences between males used in this experiment averaged only 2.3 mm, we would not expect the fundamental frequency of a male's call to be the best predictor of mating success. Laboratory results demonstrated that call rate could override female preference for the low frequency call over the high frequency call, while intensity could at least dilute this preference. However, individual males in the field varied both call rate and the call intensity as perceived by the female. We suggest that the interaction between call rate, male size and mating success should be studied further through the use of field-choice experiments. 相似文献

The lipids of 2 species and 1 group of copepods, 4 species of euphausiids, 2 species of mysids, and 6 species of decapods, taken from different depths in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean and Western Mediterranean Sea, have been analysed specifically for their wax ester content. The mid-water animals living below 500 m contained large amounts of wax ester (30 to 80% total lipid), while those animals living in the upper 600 to 700 m or on the sea floor had only small wax ester fractions (5 to 10% total lipid). It is suggested that the wax esters are laid down by those animals living in areas of low food density, where energy conservation is important, partly to achieve a more neutral buoyancy. Version 4.10s of the comprehensive air-quality model with extensions (CAMx) photochemical grid model has been developed, which includes two options for representing particulate matter (PM) size distribution: (1) a two-section representation that consists of fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5-10) modes that has no interactions between the sections and assumes all of the secondary PM is fine; and (2) a multisectional representation that divides the PM size distribution into N sections (e.g., N = 10) and simulates the mass transfer between sections because of coagulation, accumulation, evaporation, and other processes. The model was applied to Southern California using the two-section and multisection representation of PM size distribution, and we found that allowing secondary PM to grow into the coarse mode had a substantial effect on PM concentration estimates. CAMx was then applied to the Western United States for the 1996 annual period with a 36-km grid resolution using both the two-section and multisection PM representation. The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) and Regional Modeling for Aerosol and Deposition (REMSAD) models were also applied to the 1996 annual period. Similar model performance was exhibited by the four models across the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) and Clean Air Status and Trends Network monitoring networks. All four of the models exhibited fairly low annual bias for secondary PM sulfate and nitrate but with a winter overestimation and summer underestimation bias. The CAMx multisectional model estimated that coarse mode secondary sulfate and nitrate typically contribute <10% of the total sulfate and nitrate when averaged across the more rural IMPROVE monitoring network. 相似文献
