Waste management strategies in mining projects will depend to a large extent on the characteristics of the operational process, the type of ore and prevailing socio-environmental conditions, amongst other issues. The expenditures required by the management scheme and the implementation of remediation programs will be determined by the extent that the above issues were considered in the planning phase of the project. Several works have been published in the literature concerning the analysis of waste management programs and environmental impacts associated with uranium projects around the world. However, the vast majority do not report a comprehensive assessment integrating the various relationships among operational process, environmental impact, remediation strategy and costs. This study, divided into two papers, presents a detailed critical analysis of the waste management strategies adopted in two uranium production centres in Brazil, i.e., the Poços de Caldas Project (Part I) and the Caetité Project (Part II). The operational processes are described and the environmental impacts of the generated wastes as well as the adopted management strategies and costs are examined. Also, in Part II, a comparison between both production centres is made emphasizing the impacts of environmental and social-economical issues on the overall assessment. 相似文献

AbstractCresols are chemical contaminants derivative from phenol which can be found in sewage sludge. However, little attention has been given to monitoring these compounds in environmental matrices in the literature. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a simple method based on solid-liquid extraction with low temperature purification for determining three cresol isomers in sludge. The quantification of these compounds was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry with a previous derivatization step. After a detailed study, the cresol recovery was higher than 91%, with relative standard deviation lower than 12% and a limit of quantification of 20?μg kg?1. Linearity was achieved between 10 and 90?μg L?1 (R2 > 0.98) with the standard solutions prepared in matrix extracts due to the trouble caused by the matrix effect. The proposed method was applied with success for monitoring cresols in sewage sludge samples coming from six different wastewater treatment plants. All samples showed contamination by cresols, mainly p-cresol with values between 32.3 and 516.9?μg kg?1. The majority of the analyzed samples showed a total sum of the isomers higher than the maximum residue limit established by Brazilian legislation (160?μg kg?1). 相似文献

Polysaccharide natural seed coat from the tree Magonia pubescens, in the form of hydrogel was used to remove metals in aqueous solution. Swelling tests indicate that seed coat presents hydrogel
behavior, with maximum water absorption of 292 g water/g. Adsorption experiments performed using Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Cr3+, Fe3+ and Zn2+ demonstrated that the polysaccharide structure has a high capacity to extract these ions from the aqueous solution. Scanning
electron microscopy revealed significant morphological changes of the material before and after water contact. Differential
scanning calorimetry measurements indicate a signal shift of the water evaporation temperature in the material with adsorbed
zinc. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis combined with theoretical studies by the density functional theory and on
Hartree–Fock (HF) level evidence that the metallic ions were adsorbed through coordination with hydroxyl groups of polysaccharide.
In the case of Zn2+ the lowest HF energy was observed for the tetracoordination mode, where Zn2+ is coordinated by two hydroxyl groups and two water molecules. 相似文献
