Summary Life stages of the primitive Australian ithomiine butterflyTellervo zoilus and its larval hostplant, the apocynaceous vineParsonsia straminea, were quantitatively assayed for pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). PAs were found in all stages, mainly as N-oxides, being most concentrated in larvae and freshly-emerged adults. Although adults feed at various confirmed PA sources this probably does not compensate for losses, as wild-caught adults had considerably lower concentrations of PAs. The main alkaloid present in both freshly-emerged adults and in leaves of the host-plant was lycopsamine (1b), stored by butterflies in the N-oxide form. Its presence in higher proportion, in relation to intermedine (1a), in larvae, pupae and adults ofTellervo in relation to the host-plants suggests the inversion of intermedine to lycopsamine by the insects. No 14-member ring macrocyclic PAs were detected in either food-plant or butterflies. Several other PAs were found in wild-caught adults reflecting visits to other PA sources. PAs were also found in high concentrations in freshly-emerged individuals of the danaineEuploea core bred onParsonsia straminea. Wild-caughtDanaus affinis had high PA levels acquired from adult feeding. Freshly emergedEuploea raised onIschnocarpus frutescens andDanaus raised onIschnostemma carnosum (both PA-free) were preyed on by the orb weaving spiderNephila maculata, and showed no PAs. In all cases where PAs were present, most butterflies were liberated, usually cut out of the web unharmed, byNephila. The spider's response was not closely linked to PA concentration, however, and may also depend on hunger levels and previous experience with PA-containing butterflies. All control and other non-PA containing butterflies were consumed although rejection of some body parts of freshly-emergedDanaus affinis suggests that compounds other than PAs may be involved.  相似文献

Tourists are particularly vulnerable when natural disasters occur in regions that they are visiting. It is assumed that they lack awareness and understanding of the actions that they need to take in such circumstances. This study examines the responses of tourists in times of disaster, building on empirical data collected through large‐scale surveys conducted in Bali and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2015. Both are important tourist destinations in the country that have suffered major disasters in recent years. The different types of responses to these events are framed using a grid/group analysis stemming from cultural theory. The study resulted in three key findings: (i) current disaster management planning largely follows a single rationale; (ii) tourists are not a homogeneous group, but rather a complex, diverse, and dynamic body of stakeholders; and (iii) the focus of disaster management planning should shift from a single rationale to a polyrational methodology. Disaster managers need to consider, therefore, these different aspects in the context of preparedness.  相似文献

Ash deposition is still an unresolved problem when retrofitting existing air-fired coal power plants to oxy-fuel combustion. Experimental data are quite necessary for mechanism validation and model development. This work was designed to obtain laboratory combustor data on ash and deposits from oxy-coal combustion, and to explore the effects of oxy-firing on their formation. Two bituminous coals (Utah coal and Illinois coal) and one sub-bituminous coal (PRB coal) were burned on a down-fired combustor under both oxy- and air-firing. Two oxy-fired cases, i.e., 27 vol% O2/73 vol% CO2 and 32 vol% O2/68 vol% CO2, were selected to match the radiation flux and the adiabatic flame temperature of air combustion, respectively. Once-through CO2 was used to simulate fully cleaned recycled flue gas. The flue gas excess oxygen was fixed at 3 vol%. For each case, both size-segregated fly ash and bulk fly ash samples were obtained. Simultaneously, ash deposits were collected on an especially designed un-cooled deposition probe. Ash particle size distributions and chemical composition of all samples were characterized. Data showed that oxy-firing had insignificant impacts on the tri-modal ash particle size distributions and composition size distributions in the size range studied. Bulk ash compositions also showed no significant differences between oxy- and air-firing, except for slightly higher sulfur contents in some oxy-fired ashes. The oxy-fired deposits were thicker than those from air-firing, suggesting enhanced ash deposition rates in oxy-firing. Oxy-firing also had apparent impacts on the deposit composition, especially for those components (e.g., CaO, Fe2O3, SO3, etc.) that could contribute significantly to ash deposition. Based on these results, aerodynamic changes in gas flow and changes in combustion temperature seemed more important than chemical changes of ash particles in determining deposit behavior during oxy-coal combustion.  相似文献

Multiple behavioral and chemical studies indicate that ant nestmate recognition cues are low-volatile substances, in particular hydrocarbons (HCs) located on the cuticular surface. We tested the hypothesis that in the ant Camponotus fellah, nest environment, in particular nest volatile odors, can modulate nestmate-recognition-mediated aggression. Workers were individually confined within their own nest in small cages having either a single mesh (SM = limited physical contact permitted) or a double mesh (DM = exposed to nest volatiles only) screen. Individual workers completely isolated outside their nest (CI) served as control. When reintroduced into a group of 50 nestmates, the CI workers were attacked as alien ants after only 2 weeks of separation, whereas the SM workers were treated as nestmates even after 2 months of separation. Aggression towards DM ants depended on the period of isolation. Only DM workers isolated for over 2 months were aggressed by their nestmates, which did not significantly differ from the CI nestmates. Cuticular HC analyses revealed that the profile of the non-isolated ants (NI) was clearly distinct from that of CI, SM and DM ants. Profile differences matched the aggressive response in the case of CI ants but were uncorrelated in the case of SM or DM ants. This suggests that keeping the ants within the nest environment affected nestmate recognition in additional ways than merely altering their HC profile. Nest environment thus appears to affect label–template mismatch by modulating aggressive behavior, as well as the direction at which cuticular HCs diverged during the separation period.  相似文献

In the 1980s an explosive increase of the introduced Nile perch ( Lates sp.; Harrison 1991) in Lake Victoria caused the destruction of approximately 65% of the endemic haplochromine cichlids. The eradication of approximately 200 vertebrate species in less than a decade may well represent the largest extinction event among vertebrates during this century. The introduction of the Nile perch can be considered as a large-scale, albeit unintended, experiment. Farreaching changes in the food web are taking place. We present data on the importance of haplochromines in the ecosystem prior to the Nile perch boom. An analysis of the pelagic community in the sublittoral area of the Mwanza Gulf revealed that the phytoplanktivores formed 18% of the biomass of the total haplochromine community. In the benthic community, the detritivores that frequently included phytoplankton in their diet comprised 31% of the biomass. We examine the hypothesis that algal grazing was reduced by the disappearance of haplochromine phytoplanktivores and detritivores. The disappearance of these groups may have contributed to the recent algal blooms. To investigate this hypothesis we consider a second major change in the system. Coinciding with the decrease of the haplochromines, the number of atyid prawns, Caridina nilotica , has strongly increased. We present preliminary evidence that the stock of the detritivorous haplochromines that formerly comprised most of the demersal ichthyomass has (partially?) been replaced by the prawn. We discuss the possible mechanisms underlying this major change in the food web. With respect to the conservation of the Great African Lakes, tbe collapse of Lake Victoria's ecosystem should serve as an example of how easily a complex ecosystem can be irreversibly destroyed.  相似文献

Here long-term monitoring data taken at 33 sites in southern and central California coast and islands were used to evaluate the size structure of the large intertidal limpet, Lottia gigantea in restricted-access and in easily accessible intertidal zones that encompass a wide range of ecological variables. Using multi-dimensional analysis of population size structures, we found that sites on islands and strictly protected mainland sites have significantly larger median limpet sizes and a greater range of limpet sizes than unprotected mainland sites, while no pattern occurs in latitudinal or regional comparison of sites. Although intertidal predators such as oystercatchers were not the primary focus of the monitoring efforts, extensive natural history notes taken during sampling visits support the argument that predation was not a primary cause for the size structure differences. Finally, substratum differences were determined not to have biased the observation of larger limpets in protected sites. In regard to human interactions with limpets, we conclude that the degree of enforcement against poaching is the better predictor of limpet size structure than proximity to population centers or visitation to intertidal sites.  相似文献

Ant social parasites use chemical warfare to facilitate host colony takeover, which is a critical but recurring step in their life cycle. Many slave-making ants use the secretion of the Dufour gland to manipulate host behaviour during parasitic nest foundation and slave raids. Harpagoxenus sublaevis applies this chemical weapon onto defending Leptothorax host workers, which elicits deadly fights amongst them. Host species are expected to evolve counter-adaptations against this behavioural manipulation and in this study we investigated the geographic structure of this co-evolving trait. We compared the effectiveness of the parasitic gland secretion from different H. sublaevis populations in host colonies from various sites and analysed the occurrence of local adaptation. The two host species L. muscorum and L. acervorum generally showed different responses to the parasites’ chemical weapon: L. acervorum attacked nestmates treated with Dufour gland secretion, while L. muscorum workers fled. Flight, instead of intraspecific fights, is an adaptive host reaction as it results in fewer host fatalities during raids. Beside interspecific host differences, we found a geographic mosaic of host resistance: parasites from a German population strongly manipulated the behaviour of both sympatric Leptothorax populations. Russian or Italian hosts instead did not react with intracolonial aggression, but fled when confronted with the gland secretion of their sympatric parasite. Not only variation in host resistance explains differences in the effectiveness of the parasitic gland secretion but also interpopulational differences in its chemical composition, which were revealed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Between 1986 and 2009 nine submersible and remote-operated vehicle expeditions were carried out to study the population biology of the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae in the Comoro Islands, located in the western Indian Ocean. Latimeria live in large overlapping home ranges that can be occupied for as long as 21 years. Most individuals are confined to relatively small home ranges, resting in the same caves during the day. One hundred and forty five coelacanths are individually known, and we estimate the total population size of Grande Comore as approximately 300–400 adult individuals. The local population inhabiting a census area along an 8-km section of coastline remained stable for at least 18 years. Using LASER-assisted observations, we recorded length frequencies between 100 and 200 cm total length and did not encounter smaller-bodied individuals (<100 cm total length). It appears that coelacanth recruitment in the observation areas occur mainly by immigrating adults. We estimate that the mean numbers of deaths and newcomers are 3–4 individuals per year, suggesting that longevity may exceed 100 years. The domestic fishery represents a threat to the long-term survival of coelacanths in the study area. Recent changes in the local fishery include a decrease in the abundance of the un-motorized canoes associated with exploitation of coelacanths and an increase in motorized canoes. Exploitation rates have fallen in recent years, and by 2000, had fallen to lowest ever reported. Finally, future fishery developments are discussed.  相似文献

Summary. Field collected exocrine defensive secretions of nine neotropical Platyphora species were analyzed for the presence of plant acquired pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and pentacyclic triterpene saponins. All species secrete saponins. In addition, five species feeding on Tournefortia (Boraginaceae), Koanophyllon (Asteraceae, tribe Eupatorieae) and Prestonia (Apocynaceae) were shown to sequester PAs of the lycopsamine type, which are characteristic for species of the three plant families. The PA sequestering species commonly store intermedine, lycopsamine and their O3′-acetyl or propionyl esters as well as O7- and O9-hydroxyisovaleryl esters of retronecine. The latter as well as the O3′-acyl esters were not found in the beetles’ host plants, suggesting the ability of the beetles to esterify plant derived retronecine and intermedine or its stereoisomers. Despite the conformity of the beetles’ PA patterns, considerable inconsistencies exist regarding the PA patterns of the respective host plants. One host plant was devoid of PAs, while another contained only simple necines. Since the previous history of the field collected beetles was unknown this discrepancy remains obscure. In contrast to the Palearctic chrysomeline leaf beetles, e.g. some Oreina species which ingest and store PAs as their non-toxic N-oxides, Platyphora leaf beetles absorb and store PAs as the toxic free base (tertiary PA), but apparently avoid to accumulate PAs in the haemolymph. This suggests that Chrysolina and Platyphora leaf beetles developed different lines of adaptations in their parallel evolution of PA mediated chemical defense.
