ABSTRACT: Biotic indices and sediment trace element concentrations for 43 streams in northeastern Illinois (Chicago area) from the 1980s and 1990s were examined along an agricultural to urban land cover gradient to explore the relations among biotic integrity, sediment chemistry, and urbanization. The Illinois fish Alternative Index of Biotic Integrity (AIBI) ranged from poor to excellent in agricultural/rural streams, but streams with more than 10 percent watershed urban land (about 500 people/mi2) had fair or poor index scores. A macroinvertebrate index (MBI) showed similar trends. A qualitative habitat index (PIBI) did not correlate to either urban indicator. The AIBI and MBI correlated with urban associated sediment trace element concentrations. Elevated copper concentrations in sediment occurred in streams with greater than 40 percent watershed urban land. The number of intolerant fish species and modified index of biotic integrity scores increased in some rural, urbanizing, and urban streams from the 1980s to 1990s, with the largest increases occurring in rural streams with loamy/sandy surficial deposits. However, smaller increases also occurred in urban streams with clayey surficial deposits and over 50 percent watershed urban land. These data illustrate the potentially complex spatial and temporal relations among biotic integrity, sediment chemistry, watershed urban land, population density, and regional and local geologic setting. 相似文献

The success of a regulatory regime in decreasing point-source emissions of some harmful chemicals has highlighted the significance
of other sources. A growing number of potentially harmful chemicals have been incorporated into an expanding range of domestic
household products and are sold worldwide. Tighter regulation has been proposed, and the European Commission has introduced
the Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of Chemicals to address this concern. However, it is clear
that in addition to the regulation, there is a potential to effect change through retailer and consumer attitudes and behaviours.
Interviews were conducted with 7 key stakeholder groups to identify critical issues, which were then explored using a public
survey questionnaire (1,008 respondents) and 8 subsequent focus groups. The findings demonstrated that the issue of chemicals
in products is of concern to consumers for reasons of personal health rather than environmental protection. Key obstacles
to the wider purchase of “green-alternative” products included perceived high cost and poor performance, lack of availability
of products, and poor information concerning such products. Although improved regulation was seen as part of the solution,
consumers must also play a role. It was clear from this study that consumers are not currently able to make informed choices
about the chemicals they use but that they would be receptive to moving toward a more sustainable use of chemicals in the

The life history of the dorvilleid polychaete Stauronereis rudolphi (Delle Chiaje) was studied through the F2 generation under laboratory conditions. The species released its gametes into the water where fertilization occurred. The pelagic larvae swam for one week before settling. Segments were added successively and sexual maturity was reached in one year of laboratory culture. Spawned adults recovered and began feeding a few days after spawning. The culture techniques and foods used to rear developing eggs, larvae, juveniles, and adults were described. Comparisons were made with other developmental studies in the superfamily Eunicea.This study was a portion of a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Biology, California State College at Long Beach. The “triple bottom line” approach emphasizes not only economic goals, but social and environmental objectives as well. The “telework” option—in which employees work from home or a satellite office rather than from a central location—would appear to advance all three of these aims. But a close look at the specifics of teleworking makes clear that more data are needed to determine its ultimate impact. Moreover, despite its apparent advantages, teleworking is gaining acceptance less quickly than might be expected. Cultural ecosystem services are a function of people and place, so may change as a location transitions from rural to urban. Singapore has undergone rapid urbanization after its independence in 1965, with a concomitant decline in natural habitat extent and accessibility. Using coastal mangrove forests as a case study habitat, changing cultural values were explored with a novel array of techniques, including qualitative archival analysis (photographs, oral histories), current sources (publically uploaded social media photographs), and surveys of (a) the general public and (b) visitors to publically accessible mangroves. Cultural value changed through time, with a significant transition from intrinsic, intrapersonal values (spiritual, cultural heritage) to instrumental, interpersonal values (recreation, education). Additionally, cultural value varied between different mangroves depending on their public accessibility, and the evolving degree of human interaction with the ecosystem as urban development occured. Cultural values change as development transitions, though mangroves still play an important cultural role in a heavily urbanized environment. 相似文献

The effect of sludge processing (digested dewatered, pelletized, alkaline-stabilized, composted, and incinerated), soil type and initial soil pH on trace metal mobility was examined using undisturbed soil columns. Soils tested were Hudson silt loam (Glossaquic Hapludalf) and Arkport fine sandy loam (Lamellic Hapludalf), at initial pH levels of 5 and 7. Sludges were applied during four accelerated cropping cycles (215 tons/ha cumulative application for dewatered sludge; equivalent rates for other sludges), followed by four post-application cycles. Also examined (with no sludge applications) were Hudson soil columns from a field site that received a heavy loading of sludge in 1978. Romaine (Lactuca sativa) and oats (Avena sativa) were planted in alternate cycles, with oats later replaced by red clover (Trifolium pratense). Soil columns were watered with synthetic acid rainwater, and percolates were analyzed for trace metals (ICP spectroscopy), electrical conductivity and pH. Percolate metal concentrations varied with sludge and soil treatments. Composted sludge and ash had the lowest overall metal mobilities. Dewatered and pelletized sludge had notable leaching of Ni, Cd and Zn in Arkport soils, especially at low pH. Alkaline-stabilized sludge had the widest range of percolate metals (relatively insensitive to soils) including Cu, Ni, B and Mo. Old site column percolate concentrations showed good agreement with previous field data. Little leaching of P was observed in all cases. Cumulative percolate metal losses for all treatments were low relative to total applied metals. Leachate and soil pH were substantially depressed in dewatered and pelletized sludge soil columns and increased for alkaline-stabilized and ash treatments. 相似文献

The optical properties of sight paths in the atmosphere are reviewed, and it is shown that it is necessary to measure two optical parameters to characterize visibility. It is recommended that both the transmittance and path radiance be determined when the optical properties of sight paths are measured for visibility research studies. A practical method for monitoring these quantities is discussed and the calculations to derive the values of parameters related to human perception from these data are described. The limitations associated with monitoring visual parameters, such as contrast, are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) for regional haze uses the deciview haze index (dv) as the indicator for visibility impairment and proposes a change of 1 dv as "a small but noticeable change in haziness under most circumstances." All previous visibility rules have specified human perception as the indicator for visibility impairment. This article examines the technical basis cited in the NPR for this new indicator for visibility impairment and for the perception threshold of approximately 1 dv. Derivations based on the assumptions and approximations cited in the NPR show that the deciview haze index does not have the correct functional form to relate changes in haze within federal Class I areas to the visual perception of those changes. The just-noticeable change in light extinction is, in most cases, inversely proportional to the sight path length instead of proportional to the light-extinction coefficient. These derivations also indicate that a 1-dv change in haziness is typically too small to be perceived in most Class I areas. 相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants that are distributed worldwide. Although industrial PCB production has stopped, legacy contamination can be traced to several different commercial mixtures (e.g., Aroclors in the USA). Despite their persistence, PCBs are subject to naturally occurring biodegradation processes, although the microbes and enzymes involved are poorly understood. The biodegradation potential of PCB-contaminated sediments in a wastewater lagoon located in Virginia (USA) was studied. Total PCB concentrations in sediments ranged from 6.34 to 12,700 mg/kg. PCB congener profiles in sediment sample were similar to Aroclor 1248; however, PCB congener profiles at several locations showed evidence of dechlorination. The sediment microbial community structure varied among samples but was dominated by Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. The relative abundance of putative dechlorinating Chloroflexi (including Dehalococcoides sp.) was 0.01–0.19% among the sediment samples, with Dehalococcoides sp. representing 0.6–14.8% of this group. Other possible PCB dechlorinators present included the Clostridia and the Geobacteraceae. A PCR survey for potential PCB reductive dehalogenase genes (RDases) yielded 11 sequences related to RDase genes in PCB-respiring Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain CG5 and PCB-dechlorinating D. mccartyi strain CBDB1. This is the first study to retrieve potential PCB RDase genes from unenriched PCB-contaminated sediments. 相似文献

Temporal Changes in Allele Frequencies and a Population's History of Severe Bottlenecks 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Monitoring temporal changes in genetic variation has been suggested as a means of determining if a population has experienced a demographic bottleneck. Simulations have shown that the variance in allele frequencies over time ( F ) can provide reasonable estimates of effective population size ( Ne ). This relationship between F and Ne suggests that changes in allele frequencies may provide a way to determine the severity of recent demographic bottlenecks experienced by a population. We examined allozyme variation in experimental populations of the eastern mosquitofish ( Gambusia holbrooki ) to evaluate the relationship between the severity of demographic bottlenecks and temporal variation in allele frequencies. Estimates of F from both the fish populations and computer simulations were compared to expected rates of drift. We found that different methods for estimating F had little effect on the analysis. The variance in estimates of F was large among both experimental and simulated populations experiencing similar demographic bottlenecks. Temporal changes in allele frequencies suggested that the experimental populations had experienced bottlenecks, but there was no relationship between observed and expected values of F . Furthermore, genetic drift was likely to be underestimated in populations experiencing the most severe bottlenecks. The weak relationship between F and bottleneck severity is probably due to both sampling error associated with the number of polymorphic loci examined and the loss of alleles during the bottlenecks. For populations that may have experienced severe bottlenecks, caution should be used in making evolutionary interpretations or management recommendations based on temporal changes in allele frequencies. 相似文献
