Abstract. The small group of wolves on Isle Royale has been studied for over three decades as a model of the relationship between large carnivores and their prey. During the last ten years the population declined from 50 individuals to as few as 12 individuals. The causes of this decline may be food shortages, disease, or reduced genetic variability. We address the issues of genetic variability and relationships of Isle Royale wolves using allozyme electrophoresis, mtDNA restriction-site analysis, and multilocus hypervariable minisatellite DNA analysis (genetic fingerprinting). Our results indicate that approximately 50% of the allozyme heterozygosity has been lost in the island population, a decline similar to that expected if no immigration had occurred from the mainland. The genetic fingerprinting data indicate that the seven sampled Isle Royale wolves are as similar as captive populations of siblings. Surprisingly, the Isle Royale wolves have an mDNA genotype that is very rare on the mainland, being found in only one of 144 mainland wolves ThFF suggests that the remaining Isle Royale wolves areprobably derived from a single female founder 相似文献

Pyjama sharks (Poroderma africanum) were exposed to a wide range of salinities, over which blood serum was analysed for osmolarity, chloride and urea concentrations. Fish were divided into two groups, those fed twice weekly (high intake), and those fed once a month (low intake). Both groups were exposed to the same salinity range. High intake fish showed the characteristic elasmobranch osmolarity picture, with serum values slightly hyper-osmotic at all times. Low intake fish, however, showed a degree of hypo-osmotic regulation. Serum values for both groups overlapped at very low salinities. Serum urea was also affected by diet, so that again two distinct sets of values were produced, again with overlap at the lower salinities. When previously well-fed fish were starved over a period of one month, serum urea and osmolarity decreased simultaneously. Consequently, it is felt that serum osmolarity is directly related to serum urea levels. Serum chloride was not found to be affected by diet, both groups showing the same change in blood values when exposed to the same change in salinity. It is shown, however, that a reduction in food intake, over a period of more than a fortnight, can reduce metabolic urea to the extent of depressing serum osmolarity and, hence, shift the ionic and osmotic equilibrium between the fish and the sea water. Rhabdopleura compacta (Hineks) has a motile larva. It is evenly ciliated, and swims by rotating about its long axis. The larva is lecithotrophic, and contains a considerable amount of yolk within the blastocoel. The blastocoel is lined with a layer of flattened cells early in development, before gastrulation has begun. The endoderm is formed by invagination. Initially, the endoderm cells are tall, columnar, and contain much yolk. Nerve fibres can be seen amongst the ectoderm cells very early in development. The ectoderm cells are separated from the inner layers and yolk by a basement lamella. There is yolk within the cells as well as in the blastocoel. Some of the yolk within the blastocoelic cavity is contained within cells and some of it is extracellular. The larvae settle during gastrulation, attaching themselves to the substratum. They tend to settle in the highest parts of upturned, empty, lamellibranch shells. Soon afterwards the body regions of the adult become recognisable. 相似文献

The reproductive biology of the solitary ahermatypic coral Monomyces rubrum was studied in northeastern New Zealand between January 1996 and January 1998. The period of oogenesis lasted around 11 months, from late January to December, while spermatogenesis was more rapid, starting in late August and culminating in a spawning period in early December. Reproduction commenced at a polyp size of around 1,000 mm3 (5-6 years old) and the maximum estimated fecundity of the largest corals (7,000 mm3) was no more than 200 eggs. Oocytes were probably fertilized while within the mesentery and were shed into the coelenteron where they developed, via a solid blastula stage, for approximately 1 month. Planulae were relatively large, 3-4 mm in length and 1-2 mm diameter at the time of release, and crawled or swam immediately to the substratum. Peaks of planula shedding were semi-lunar in January 1997, but only one peak was observed in January 1998. The production of a few large rapidly settling larvae by this member of the family Flabellidae is consistent with the trend for solitary short-lived corals from other families to brood larvae rather than spawn gametes. 相似文献

This paper sets out to test the hypothesis that vertical mixing due to the dissipation of the internal tide accounts for a significant proportion of the total vertical mixing in a fjordic basin during a period of deep water isolation. During July and August 1999 two locations in the Clyde Sea were instrumented with moored RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) and conductivity-temperature-pressure chains: Station C2, near the shallow entrance sill (55 m water depth), and station C1 in the deep basin (155 m water depth). A bottom pressure recorder was also deployed at station C3 by the seaward entrance to the Clyde Sea in the North Channel of the Irish Sea. A Free-falling Light Yo-yo shear microstructure profiler (FLY) was used to measure the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) throughout the water column over 25 h at both C1 and C2. These were interspersed with two-hourly conductivity-temperature-depth casts at both sites. The observations show agreement between the dissipation rate of TKE estimated by using a microstructure profiler and that estimated from the decay of the internal tide as measured by the two ADCPs. However, to account for all the implied mixing it is necessary to invoke an additional source of buoyancy flux, the most probable candidate mechanism is enhanced internal wave breaking near the sill and at the sloping boundaries of the deep basin. In addition, the vertical eddy diffusivity estimated from the micro-structure profiler (O(0.5 cm2 s–1) indicates that internal tide induced mixing away from any boundaries contributed significantly to the overall level of mixing which is required to account for the observed evolution of the deep basin water properties. 相似文献

Teleost fishes capture prey using ram, suction, and biting behaviors. The relative use of these behaviors in feeding on midwater
prey is well studied, but few attempts have been made to determine how benthic prey are captured. This issue was addressed
in the wrasses (Labridae), a trophically diverse lineage of marine reef fishes that feed extensively on prey that take refuge
in the benthos. Most species possess strong jaws with stout conical teeth that appear well-suited to gripping prey. Mechanisms
of prey capture were evaluated in five species encompassing a diversity of feeding ecologies: Choerodon anchorago (Bloch, 1791), Coris gaimard (Quoy and Gaimard, 1824), Hologymnosus doliatus (Lacepède, 1801), Novaculichthys taeniourus (Lacepède, 1801) and Oxycheilinus digrammus (Lacepède, 1801). Prey capture sequences were filmed with high-speed video at the Lizard Island Field Station (14°40′S, 145°28′E)
during April and May 1998. Recordings were made of feeding on pieces of prawn suspended in the midwater and similar pieces
of prawn held in a clip that was fixed to the substratum. Variation was quantified among species and between prey types for
kinematic variables describing the magnitude and timing of jaw, hyoid, and head motion. Species differed in prey capture kinematics
with mean values of most variables ranging between two and four-fold among species and angular velocity of the opening jaw
differing seven-fold. The kinematics of attached prey feeding could be differentiated from that of midwater captures on the
basis of faster angular velocities of the jaws and smaller movements of cranial structures which were of shorter duration.
All five species used ram and suction in combination during the capture of midwater prey. Surprisingly, ram and suction also
dominated feedings on attached prey, with only one species making greater use of biting than suction to remove attached prey.
These data suggest an important role for suction in the capture of benthic prey by wrasses. Trade-offs in skull design associated
with suction and biting may be particularly relevant to understanding the evolution of feeding mechanisms in this group.

Recruitment of juvenile fishes to coral grids, each comprising 4 colonies of 3 species of coral (Acropora formosa, Seriatopora hystrix and Pocillopora damicornis), was examined at 4 widely separated sites within the lagoon of One Tree Reef over two successive summers and intervening months (November 1976–January 1978). Recruitment was highly seasonal, with most recruitment occurring during summer. For many species, numbers settling differed greatly from year to year with total numbers (over all sites) differing as much as an order of magnitude between summers. Many fish species demonstrated marked preference among the three coral species as settling sites. The distribution of each of the 20 commonest species across the 4 lagoon sites differed significantly from a random pattern. Differences of an order of magnitude were common in the numbers of a given species recruited to different sites. Each site was preferred by at least one species. In each of 5 cases examined, the pattern of settlement of the species across the 4 sites changed significantly from one summer to the next. The distribution of recruits of a number of species corresponded to the distribution of adults, but for other species there was no correspondence. It is concluded that, at the spatial scale examined, patterns of recruitment of some taxa are consistently more variable than those of other taxa. The implications of spatial variability of recruitment for the distribution of adult fish is discussed and the importance of being able to discriminate such natural variability from other kinds of change is stressed. 相似文献

Samples were taken from a 2 900 m deep permanent station (centred on 54°40N; 12°16W) in the southern Rockall Trough, from November 1975 to September 1980, inclusive. Revision of juvenile size frequencies was necessary after removal of postlarvae of an annual non-viable settlement of Ophiocten gracilis (G. O. Sars) that were mistakenly included in a previous analysis. The present study of the revised data shows that settlement of Ophiura ljungmani (Lyman) occurs in summer when disk-size frequencies are dominated by the newly metamorphosed postlarvae. The likely age composition in larger sizes was suggested from the progression of modes along the size axis in juvenile size classes in consecutive were developed from Gaussian mixtures fitted by constrained computer search using, as starting values, component parameter values suggested from the frequency histograms. Choice between competing solutions was made on the basis both of goodness-of-fit and biological plausibility. However, identification of year-class structure amongst sizes >3 to 4 mm disk diameter remained conjectural owing to the low frequencies of adults in the samples. Comparison of the fitted component-means in the time series suggested a marked seasonal growth pattern, with maximal growth in spring. Probable age composition amongst adult sizes was extrapolated from von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from the means of juvenile year classes.Communicated by J. Mauchline, Oban 相似文献
