The specimens of Patella intermedia, Patella rustica, Patella ulyssiponensis and Patella vulgata were analysed for morphological and morphometric characters, and for the resistance to compression and crushing to a force applied at the apex. Shell shape in these species ranged from the high symmetrical cone, with a rounded base of P. rustica, to the flat, asymmetrical, narrow-pear-shaped base of P. ulyssiponensis. P. intermedia and P. vulgata showed intermediate morphologies. Shell thickness increased linearly with age, but differed in the four limpets. P. rustica had the thickest shells, and P. ulyssiponensis and P. vulgata had the thinnest shells. P. intermedia displayed intermediate shell thickness. Considering deformability and toughness, P. intermedia shells usually needed the highest force to compress in height, the highest pressure to collapse, and were appreciably deformed at collapse. On the opposite side, P. ulyssiponensis shells usually needed the lowest force to compress in height, the lowest pressure to collapse, and were much less deformed at collapse. P. intermedia shells were therefore the most deformable and tough, and P. ulyssiponensis, the most stiff and fragile. P. rustica and P. vulgata shells displayed intermediate behaviour. However, numerical simulations based on the finite element method using the experimentally determined shells’ geometry and thickness, but considering similar shells’ material and structure in the four species, predicted that shell toughness should be decreased in the order P. rustica >> P. intermedia > P. vulgata >> P. ulyssiponensis. P. rustica shells’ geometry (a high and centred cone) and thickness (very thick) were therefore, theoretically, the most fitted for shells to resist crushing by compression. Yet, in the experimental tests, they were not the most resistant shells. It was concluded that resistance to crushing was not a direct function of shell morphology and morphometry, but appeared to be mainly determined by shell deformability. This is most probably related to differences in the internal composition and architecture of the shell in the four species. By comparison with data reported in the literature on the pressures normally exerted by ocean waves, it was concluded that these limpets have resistances to crushing in far excess to pressures normally endured in nature, being therefore unlikely that these species are crushed by the action of even very strong waves on shores. Hard objects, like logs and boulders, can be hurled onto the shore by waves, and constitute a much greater threat to limpets than the waves themselves. The high toughness of the limpet shell can be related to resistance to the impact of incidental hard objects. There was no direct relationship between the habit preferences of these limpets and the resistance to crushing. Other factors are involved in the distribution of these species in the shores.  相似文献

Avian plumage colouration is one of the most impressive displays in nature and is frequently used as sexual signal. There is now considerable evidence that females consistently prefer males with the most elaborated colour displays. Bird colour vision expands into the ultraviolet (UV) range, which prompted several studies to test the importance of UV in mate choice, revealing that females are affected by the UV light component. These studies were mostly performed on structural plumage, whereas carotenoid-based plumage was rarely considered, although it also has a typical reflection peak in the UV. Our study tested the female choice over male yellow colouration, and whether it is influenced by UV removal, in the European serin (Serinus serinus), a sexually dichromatic cardueline finch, with males showing a conspicuous carotenoid-based yellow plumage. We shows that females preferred yellower males and that male attractiveness was lost when the UV colouration was blocked, with either of the UV-blocking techniques used. The results of our study indicate that the UV component of carotenoid colouration is important in the female mate assessment in serins and highlights the importance of considering colour perception in avian mate choice.  相似文献

Incubation of guanosine and Sudan III induces the formation of a stable adduct, which may be identified using a spectrophotometric technique and mass spectroscopy. The high nucleophilicity of the C8 position and its proximity to N7 makes the site susceptible to a nucleophilic attack, which explains the SN2 reaction detected between guanosine and Sudan III dye. In addition, direct interaction of Sudan III with calf thymus DNA was monitored using a simple spectrophotometric technique. The results presented indicate that a simple modification of the chemical structure of Sudan I (monoazo dye) to Sudan III (diazo dye) markedly alters reactivity towards nitrogenous DNA bases.  相似文献

In the winter of 2006/2007 approximately 200,000 m3 of high quality sand from the dredging of the local marina were placed at the ocean-side beaches in the vicinity of a tourism development in Tróia, Portugal. The beach-quality sediment provided a source of “sand of opportunity” which was used to increase the dry-beach width of the highly used coastal stretch. The sediment was placed along approximately 600 m of shoreline and a monitoring program has since being carried out twice a year. High-resolution topographic surveys and sediment analysis are being conducted to evaluate the performance and response of the fill to the local forcing factors and ultimately to evaluate the effectiveness of the fill project. Two years after the nourishment, the sediment has been distributed both cross-shore and alongshore. The pre-nourishment beach slope was attained and the new shoreline has acquired a natural shape. Berm width increased by a maximum of 100 m, and a set of new dune ridges has developed, due to sand accumulation promoted by the settlement of vegetation. In conclusion, 2 years after its completion, the beach nourishment in Tróia can be viewed as a successful project in which the beneficial use of dredged material resulted in: 1) area for increased dune field growth and development, 2) enhancement of potential shorebird nesting areas and habitat, and 3) increased area for recreation purposes.  相似文献

The Sete Cidades Lake (437 ha) is located in a volcanic crater of São Miguel Island (Azores). The watershed is 1923 ha, and 25% of it is covered with water. Extreme logging and the use of fertilizers in the cattle grazing areas have caused sedimentation and eutrophication of the main water body (Carlson Trophic State Index TSI = 40–50 mesoeutrophy). To deal with the issue, a linear programming model was created to generate efficient land-use scenarios for different amounts of phosphorus release. The model was calibrated for the present situation and then simulated to obtain 29 scenarios. It allowed us to derive parameters for each scenario. Then a multiobjective program was used to derive an acceptable weight for each indicator. The dominant solutions were discovered and discussed with different stakeholders.  相似文献

Fisheries bycatch of marine megafauna is a worldwide conservation issue. In this study, we propose a method for generating reliable maps of sea turtle bycatch hotspots. Based on a well-defined area of fishing effort determined from the longline sets monitored in 2007 and 2010, we calculated the fishing area with the highest turtle bycatch density for both years. Our results show that it is important to consider all the components of fishing effort (area, number of hooks and soak time) in order to standardize the bycatch events, and thus the spatial density of the captures can be considered an index of abundance and aggregation of the species. Moreover, the high-resolution level of the analyses was useful for investigating the cumulative effect of the longline sets, which often overlap, and made it possible to correctly map the capture density and the intensity of the fishing effort at any given location.  相似文献

Plastics are present in a lot of aspects of everyday life. They are very versatile and resistant to microbial attack. Polyurethanes are used in several industries and are divided in polyester and polyether polyurethanes and there are different types among them. Despite their microbial resistance, they are susceptible to the attack of fungi and bacteria but the mechanism to elucidate its biodegradation are unknown. There are reports from bacteria and fungi that are capable of degrading polyurethane but the studies about the enzymes that attack the plastic are focused on bacterial enzymes only. The enzymes reported are of type esterase and protease mainly since these enzymes are very unspecific and can recognize some regions in the polyurethane molecule and hydrolyze it. Fungal enzymes have been studied prior the 1990s decade but recently, some authors report the use of filamentous fungi to degrade polyurethane and also report some characteristics of the enzymes involved in it. This review approaches polyurethane biodegradation by focusing on the enzymes reported to date.  相似文献

The timing of gamete release by fucoid algae, although known to be restricted to calm days is not clearly understood within a circadian time scale. The need for externally fertilizing species to avoid gamete dilution suggests that in wave-exposed areas spawning may occur during particular tidal phases. However, this may differ between mating systems, as selfing species may be less affected by gamete dilution. In this study, two different approaches were used to determine when egg release occurs during the tidal cycle in two sister species with different mating systems. First, egg settlement of Fucus vesiculosus (dioecious) and Fucus spiralis (selfing hermaphrodite) was quantified on removable substrates (egg settlement disks) every day for 2 months and settlement patterns were used to statistically estimate the radius of a circle that would encompass 99% of each patch of settled eggs (the egg dispersal radius). Also, egg release was quantified every 2 h during the tidal cycle. A significantly larger egg dispersal radius (P < 0.02) was found for F. spiralis than F. vesiculosus, and this difference was somewhat site dependent with a greater difference between species in exposed sites. The egg dispersal radius was negatively correlated with significant wave height and positively correlated with sea surface temperature for both the species (P < 0.05), with a greater effect of both the factors for F. spiralis than for F. vesiculosus. Egg release during the tidal cycle was variable between species and experiments, with F. vesiculosus releasing more eggs, later in the day, and at a lower tide, than F. spiralis, which released fewer eggs, throughout the day and at all tides. The dioecious species, F. vesiculosus, may have developed a specific adaptation for timing the egg release to periods when emersed in exposed habitats to avoid rapid dilution of gametes that require outcrossing for fertilization. On the other hand, egg release for F. spiralis, which can self-fertilize, occurred both when emersed and immersed, suggesting this species has developed less synchrony with specific environmental factors. Site dependence also suggests local wave conditions can modulate timing of release. The data are consistent with the relaxation of the selective constraints of water motion on fertilization success in a selfing hermaphrodite, relative to an obligate outcrossing species. Results support the idea that species with different mating systems evolve different sensitivities to environmental cues for gamete release with specific implications for inbreeding and successful external fertilization in the ocean.  相似文献

This paper deals with the diversity and seasonal variations of macro-benthic infauna and associated environmental factors influencing the benthic community in the inshore waters of southern Indian coast. Four seasonal collections (2006–2007) were made at three different depths (5, 15 and 25 m) in the inshore waters of Pazhayar, Parangipettai and Cuddalore and at 5 m near State Industrial Promotion Council of Tamilnadu (SIPCOT), covering 10 stations in Bay of Bengal. Altogether, 80 infaunal samples (Van-veen grab 0.1 m2) were collected which revealed the occurrence of 132 species representing five diverse groups. Polychaetes were the dominant group (45%), followed by bivalves (31%) and gastropods (16%). Diversity (H’log2) was maximum (4.601) at Parangipettai 25 m during the pre-monsoon season, and the minimum (0.954) was in SIPCOT during monsoon. Toxic blooms of golden alga (Prymnesium parvum) have caused substantial ecological and economic harm in freshwater and marine systems throughout the world. In North America, toxic blooms have impacted freshwater systems including large reservoirs. Management of water chemistry is one proposed option for golden alga control in these systems. The main objective of this study was to assess physicochemical characteristics of water that influence golden alga presence, abundance, and toxicity in the Upper Colorado River basin (UCR) in Texas. The UCR contains reservoirs that have experienced repeated blooms and other reservoirs where golden alga is present but has not been toxic. We quantified golden alga abundance (hemocytometer counts), ichthyotoxicity (bioassay), and water chemistry (surface grab samples) at three impacted reservoirs on the Colorado River; two reference reservoirs on the Concho River; and three sites at the confluence of these rivers. Sampling occurred monthly from January 2010 to July 2011. Impacted sites were characterized by higher specific conductance, calcium and magnesium hardness, and fluoride than reference and confluence sites. At impacted sites, golden alga abundance and toxicity were positively associated with salinity‐related variables and blooms peaked at ~10°C and generally did not occur above 20°C. Overall, these findings suggest management of land and water use to reduce hardness or salinity could produce unfavorable conditions for golden alga.  相似文献
