Foraging behaviour in the South American sunstar Heliaster helianthus (Lamarck) was investigated quantitatively on a subtropical rocky shore in central Peru. H. helianthus feeds mainly on two mussel species, Semimytilus algosus (Gould) and Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck). A sequence of foraging behaviour was described and observations were made of the timing of attacks on mussel beds by sun-stars. Although H. helianthus is capable of foraging out of water, an unusual trait for asteroids, the timing of such foraging appears to be well adjusted to avoid the risk of prolonged heat and desiccation. Foraging activity began 4 h 52 min before high tide and 3 h 19 min after high tide, with a mode between 2 h 30 min and 2 h before high tide. Fifty-two percent of all foraging activity began between 3 h 30 min and 2 h before high tide, while only 12.4% began after high tide. This suggests that H. helianthus mainly relies upon changes in the rate of tidal increase as a cue to begin foraging. Foraging activity ceased between 3 h 40 min before and 4 h 29 min after high tide, with 48% ending between 2 and 0.5 h before high tide. The duration of foraging ranged from 19 to 190 min, with values between 30 and 80 min accounting for 67.4% of all observations. The median duration was 62 min. No significant correlation was detected between the time when foraging activity commenced and its duration. The intensity of foraging activity varied on consecutive days, with a general pattern of decreasing intensity after a day of relatively high activity. Foraging location in relation to a mussel bed was analysed on a marked, 8 m stretch of rocky shore. The numbers of foraging H. helianthus observed on different sections of the shore were related neither to the width of the mussel zone nor to the vertical position of the lower edge of the mussel zone, indicating that sun-stars do not rely upon these factors to assess prey availability and that ideal free distribution with regard to prey abundance does not occur on the spatial scale examined. 相似文献

The distribution coefficient of (137)Cs has been determined in 58 soils from 12 sampling points from Biscay by treating 10 g with 25 ml of an aqueous solution with an activity of 1765 Bq in the radionuclide, by shaking during 64 h and measuring the residual activity with a suitable detector. Soils were characterised by sampling depth, particle size analysis and the usual chemical parameters. Soils were thereafter treated to fix the chemical forms of (137)Cs speciation by successive extractions in order to determine fractions due to exchangeable, associated with carbonates, iron oxide and organic matter fractions, obtaining by difference the amount taken by the rest of the soil constituents. For this research, 16 soils from four points were selected from the previous samples. The greatest mean percentages of (137)Cs sorption were with the rest (69.93), exchangeable (13.17) and organic matter (12.54%) fractions. Agricultural water management is a complex decision-making problem involving multiple criteria of different nature as well as multiple decision agents with different interests. To handle this multiplicity of objectives and interests a pragmatic approach based on compromise programming is proposed in this paper. The methodology is applied to an agricultural water management problem in Tauste, Spain. Public, environmentalist and private decision makers are considered. The approach proposed reveals itself as a pragmatic alternative to other approaches based on aggregate utility functions with very sound theoretical underpinnings but with few possibilities of actually being put into practice. 相似文献

Background
Little evidence is available on the influence of socioeconomic factors on exposure to persistent organic pollutants, especially during vulnerable periods such as pregnancy and early life.Objective
To investigate the relationship of maternal social class with placental concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and their combined estrogenic activity measured with a biomarker of exposure.Methods
Exposure to 16 OCPs (DDTs, endosulfans, and seven other compounds) and the total effective xenoestrogenic burden (TEXB) were analyzed in placentas from a mother-child cohort. OCP concentrations were quantified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and TEXB was assessed with the E-Screen bioassay. Social class was classified according to maternal occupation. Multivariate regression analysis was conducted to examine variations in pesticide exposure and TEXB as a function of maternal social class in 257 subjects.Results
Placental p,p′-DDT concentrations were higher in social classes III and IV than in classes I-II (the most affluent); concentrations of the sum of DDTs were higher in class IV; and exposure to the sum of endosulfans was greater in class III. HCB concentrations were higher among women in class IV than in classes I-II and among manual (classes III-V) than non-manual workers. However, the trend across social classes was only statistically significant for HCB. Social class significantly explained 10% of the variability in concentrations of the sum of endosulfans.Conclusion
There is a need to explore whether more disadvantaged populations suffer higher levels of exposure to pesticides or other environmental chemicals and how different social processes contribute to this exposure. 相似文献96.

The European Water Framework Directive commits partner countries to evolve uniform protocols for monitoring the environmental
condition of natural water bodies, crucially integrating biological and ecological criteria from the associated ecosystems.
This has encouraged considerable research on the development of bioindicator-based systems of water quality monitoring. A
critical step towards this end is providing evidence that the proposed bioindicator system adequately reflects the human pressures
to which a specific water body is submitted. Here we investigate the utility of pulse-amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorometry,
a fast, non-destructive and increasingly popular bioindicator-based method, in assessing water quality based on the widespread
Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica, an important constituent of submersed benthic vegetation. Specifically, we evaluated the ability of PAM to discriminate
between sites along a pre-established gradient of anthropogenic pressures and the consistency and reliability of PAM parameters
across spatial scales. Our results show that the maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), representing the structural photosynthetic
efficiency of the plant, responds significantly to the degree of site-level anthropogenic pressure. However, Fv/Fm values
in our study increased with increasing pressure, in striking contrast with other studies that report declines in Fv/Fm values
with increasing stress. A potential explanation for this discrepancy is that our study sites were influenced by multiple diffuse
stressors (characteristic of most coastal waters) that could potentially interact with each other to influence Fv/Fm values
in often unpredictable ways. The photosynthetic variables calculated from rapid light curves (ETRmax, maximum electron transport rate; α, initial slope of the curve; I
k, saturating irradiance), which represent an instant picture of the photosynthetic activity of the plant, were unable to clearly
discriminate between sites subject to different anthropogenic pressures due to considerable small-scale variability. Taken
together, these results suggest that even though PAM fluorometry may be a good candidate tool for monitoring water bodies
in terms of costs and applicability, considerably more needs to be understood about how its parameters respond to real-world
stressors, particularly when they act in concert with each other. With our present understanding of seagrass photosynthetic
responses to anthropogenic stress, it would be ill advised to employ PAM as anything but a complementary tool to validate

The demand for low cost and effective materials to remove contaminants such as residues of oil spills has encouraged studies on new biosorbents produced from wastes. Considering the overgeneration of fishing residues and the necessity to provide an alternative purpose for such materials, this study aimed to evaluate squid gladius and its derivatives (β-chitin and chitosan) as sorbents to remove marine diesel oil (MDO) from fresh and artificial seawater. It was also executed an attempted to improve their performances through a high-intensity ultrasound treatment (UT-gladius and UT-β-chitin). All sorbents removed MDO at both salinities. Contact surface area, salinity, and water retention seemed to play a key role in the outcomes. UT-β-chitin’s performance was significantly superior to β-chitin’s and chitosan’s in MDO removal at salinity 0, as well as at salinity 30, where gladius and UT-gladius also excelled. Ultrasound treatment improved the oil removal performance of UT-β-chitin by increasing its contact surface area. This is the first report on the efficiency of gladius and UT-β-chitin for such purpose, and brought up huge possibilities and new questions that can lead to the achievement of biosorbents of great efficiency. 相似文献

The sinking of the 'Prestige' oil tanker in front of the Galician coast (NW of Spain) in November 2002 offered a unique opportunity to analyze intermediate cytogenetic and endocrine effects among people exposed to the complex mixture of substances that oil constitutes, including several toxic heavy metals. In this work we evaluated the relationship between exposure to heavy metals (blood concentrations of aluminium, cadmium, nickel, lead and zinc) and genotoxic parameters (sister chromatid exchanges, micronucleus test and comet assay) or endocrine parameters (plasmatic concentrations of prolactin and cortisol) in subjects exposed to 'Prestige' oil during cleaning tasks developed after the spillage. Concentrations of lead were significantly related to the comet assay even after adjusting by age, sex and smoking. Cortisol concentrations were significantly influenced by aluminium, nickel (both, inversely) and cadmium (positively). Women had clearly higher concentrations of prolactin and cortisol, even when adjusting by age, smoking, cadmium, aluminium or nickel. Plasmatic cortisol was jointly influenced by gender, smoking and aluminium or nickel (all p<0.05). In women there was a strong relationship between concentrations of cadmium and prolactin (beta=0.37, p=0.031). When the effects of cadmium, aluminium and nickel on cortisol were simultaneously assessed, only the latter two metals remained statistically significant. Among parameters analysed, cortisol appeared to be the most sensitive to the effects of metal exposure. Plasma levels of cortisol deserve further evaluation as a potentially relevant biomarker to assess the effects of exposure to heavy metals. 相似文献
