Summary Breeding males or females were removed from groups of the cooperatively breeding acorn woodpecker to study (1) competition among individuals from different groups to fill the breeding vancancies, (2) conflict between parents and offspring within groups over replacement of the removed bird, and (3) conflict between parents and offspring for breeding status. Intense fights (power struggles) among nonbreeders from other groups to fill the breeding vacancies developed after the removals. In groups containing only helpers of the opposite sex as the removed bird, replacement was rapid, but in groups containing helpers of the same sex as the removed bird replacement was delayed substantially. In these latter groups parent-offspring conflict developed: helpers could not breed because their parent of the opposite sex was present, and they attacked potential replacements, while their remaining parent advertised for a new mate by calling. Once replacement had occurred, dominance interactions between parents and offspring and among siblings appeared to prevent some individuals from breeding. We conclude that the potential for competition among close kin is high in cooperative species because breeding opportunities are limited. 相似文献

Derbyshire was one of the best known centres of endemic goitre in Great Britain. Some 160 km from the coast in the direction of the prevailing wind, topsoils in the area are generally low in iodine (mean = 5.44 mg l/kg). Weathered rocks and soils are richer in iodine than the unweathered bedrocks, with soils developed over limestones being richer than those over sandstones, shales and dolomites. Highest iodine contents in soil profiles over limestones occur in the upper horizons while over sandstones, iodine concentrates in the lower horizons. The major cause of endemic goitre in north Derbyshire is likely to be relatively low levels of iodine, while the calcium rich soils of the area may contribute by reducing plant iodine uptake. 相似文献

Surface water enters the Haile Gold Mine, Lancaster County, South Carolina by means of a small stream and is ponded behind
a dam and in an abandoned pit. This water is affected by acidic drainage. In spite of the large exposures of potentially acid
producing pyritic rock, the flux of acid to the water is relatively low. Nevertheless, the resulting pH values of the mine
water are low (around 3.5) due to negligible buffering capacity. In view of the observed low release of acidity, the potential
for acid drainage abatement by limestone ameliorants appears feasible.
This study investigated the effects of limestone treatment on acid generation rates of the Haile mine pyritic rocks through
a series of leaching experiments. Below a critical alkalinity threshold value, solutions of dissolved limestone were found
consistently to accelerate the rate of pyrite oxidation by varying degrees. The oxidation rates were further accelerated by
admixing solid limestone with the pyritic rock. However, after a period of about a month, the pyrite oxidation rate of the
admixed samples declined to a level lower than that of untreated pyrite. Leachates produced by the pyrite and limestone mixtures
contained little if any iron. Further, in the mixtures, an alteration of the pyrite surface was apparent.
The observed behaviour of the treated pyrite appears to be related to the immersion of the pyrite grains within a high alkalinity/high
pH environment. The high pH increases the rate of oxidation of ferrous iron which results in a higher concentration of ferric
iron at the pyrite surface. This, in turn, increases the rate of pyrite oxidation. Above a threshold alkalinity value, the
precipitation of hydrous iron oxides at the pyrite surface eventually outpaces acid generation and coats the pyrite surface,
retarding the rate of pyrite oxidation. 相似文献

Batch anaerobic digesters were used to stabilize microwave (MW)-irradiated waste activated sludge (WAS). A low temperature range (50-96 degrees C) MW irradiation was applied. Effects of pretreatment temperature (T) and intensity (I), concentration (C) and percentage of sludge pretreated (PT) were investigated in a multilevel factorial statistical design containing 54 mesophilic batch reactors by monitoring cumulative biogas production (CBP). Variance analysis (ANOVA) determined that the most important factors affecting WAS solubilization were temperature, intensity, and sludge concentration. Improvements in CBP from WAS were significantly affected by sludge percentage pretreated, temperature, and concentration. Pretreatment resulted in 3.6 +/- 0.6 and 3.2 +/- 0.1 fold increases in soluble to total chemical oxygen demand (SCOD/TCOD) at high and low sludge concentrations, respectively. WAS, microwaved to 96 degrees C, produced the greatest improvement in CBP with 15 +/- 0.5 and 20 +/- 0.3% increases over controls after 19 d of digestion at low and high WAS concentrations. A significant problem with UV disinfection of wastewater is the accumulation of fouling materials at sleeve-water interfaces. It has been shown that automated chemical and/or mechanical cleaning can remove most fouling materials satisfactorily. However, permanent foulants, which cannot be removed completely by typical cleaning operations, always remain on the quartz sleeves. These permanent foulants reduce UV transmittance, in turn reducing disinfecting effectiveness. This research investigated the origins, formation, and composition of permanent fouling. Four instrumental analyses were used: atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM/EDX), and sleeve UV transmittance (SUVT). It appeared that permanent foulants were trapped initially by microscale holes and peaks on fresh sleeve surfaces. Based on the topography and roughness measurements from the AFM, after long-term regular chemical and mechanical cleaning, the wipers of cleaning systems damage sleeve surfaces, creating scratches or holes with larger surface areas. Foulants are trapped more easily, and are attached tightly to the surfaces of these scratches or to each other. The results from XRF and SEM/EDX showed that the main fouling components were aluminum, iron, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. These could not be related to wastewater quality. For the specific cases studied, chemical plus mechanical cleaning is more effective in removing foulants and avoiding the accumulation of permanent foulants than mechanical cleaning alone; in most cases, SUVT was higher than 90% after chemical plus mechanical cleaning, whereas mechanical cleaning alone achieved only approximately 30% SUVT after long-term usage. 相似文献

Understanding the relationship between human disturbance and ecological response is essential to the process of indicator development. For large-scale observational studies, sites should be selected across gradients of anthropogenic stress, but such gradients are often unknown for a population of sites prior to site selection. Stress data available from public sources can be used in a geographic information system (GIS) to partially characterize environmental conditions for large geographic areas without visiting the sites. We divided the U.S. Great Lakes coastal region into 762 units consisting of a shoreline reach and drainage-shed and then summarized over 200 environmental variables in seven categories for the units using a GIS. Redundancy within the categories of environmental variables was reduced using principal components analysis. Environmental strata were generated from cluster analysis using principal component scores as input. To protect against site selection bias, sites were selected in random order from clusters. The site selection process allowed us to exclude sites that were inaccessible and was shown to successfully distribute sites across the range of environmental variation in our GIS data. This design has broad applicability when the goal is to develop ecological indicators using observational data from large-scale surveys. 相似文献

An index system developed for Louisiana lakes was based on correlations between measurable water quality parameters and perceived lake quality. Support data was provided by an extensive monitoring program of 30 lakes coordinated with opinion surveys undertaken during summer 1984. Lakes included in the survey ranged from 4 to 735 km2 in surface area with mean depths ranging from 0.5 to 8.0 m. Water quality data indicated most of these lakes are eutrophic, although many have productive fisheries and are considered recreational assets. Perception ratings of fishing quality and its associated water quality were obtained by distributing approximately 1200 surveys to Louisiana Bass Club Associaton members. The ability of Secchi disc transparency, total organic carbon, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a to discriminate between perception classes was examined using probability distributions and multivariate analyses. Secchi disc and total organic carbon best reflected perceived lake conditions; however, these parameters did not provide the discrimination necessary for developing a quantitative risk assessment of lake trophic state. Consequently, an interim lakes index system was developed based on total organic carbon and perceived lake conditions. The developed index system will aid State officials in interpretating and evaluating regularly collected lake quality data, recognizing potential problem areas, and identifying proper management policies for protecting fisheries usage within the State. 相似文献

The flow of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd, Zn, Pb) and cyanide in the Kokomo, Indiana collection system and wastewater treatment plant is analyzed. The primary objective is to determine the relative contributions of domestic and non-domestic sources to the total pollutant load in the system, and to assess the levels of discharge control required for the disposal of municipal sludge by landfill or agricultural landspreading. Sampling was conducted at point source locations, in major sewer trunk-and feeder lines, and at the treatment plant. Production and waste treatment data are presented for point sources sampled for the purpose of characterizing metal and cyanide discharges as a function of these parameters. A heavy metal mass balance is attempted for the treatment plant. Metal removal factors are presented for various plant operations. A simple statistical approach is presented for the design of a cost-effective sampling program for correlating point source and trunkline pollutant sampling. The purpose is to minimize the amount of sampling required to account for pollutants seen in trunkline and treatment plant streams in terms of discharges from specific point sources. 相似文献
