A peat core from Lindow bog near Manchester, England, was precisely cut into 2 cm slices to provide a high-resolution reconstruction of atmospheric Pb deposition. Radiocarbon and (210)Pb age dates show that the peat core represents the period ca. 2000 BC to AD 1800. Eleven radiocarbon age dates of bulk peat samples reveal a linear age-depth relationship with an average temporal resolution of 18.5 years per cm, or 37 years per sample. Using the Pb/Ti ratio to calculate the rates of anthropogenic, atmospheric Pb deposition, the profile reveals Pb contamination first appearing in peat samples dating from ca. 900 BC which clearly pre-date Roman mining activities. Using TIMS, MC-ICP-MS, and SF-ICP-MS to measure the isotopic composition of Pb, the (208)Pb/(206)Pb and (206)Pb/(207)Pb data indicate that English ores were the predominant sources during the pre-Roman, Roman, and Medieval Periods. The study shows that detailed studies of peat profiles from ombrotrophic bogs, using appropriate preparatory and analytical methods, can provide new insight into the timing, intensity, and predominant sources of atmospheric Pb contamination, even in samples dating from ancient times. 相似文献

Vigilance behaviour in gregarious species has been studied extensively, especially the relationship between individual vigilance
and group size, which is often negative. Relatively little is known about the effect of conspecifics on vigilance in non-obligate
social species or the influence of sociality itself on antipredator tactics. We investigated predator avoidance behaviour
in the yellow mongoose, Cynictis penicillata, a group-living solitary forager, and compared it with a sympatric group-living, group-foraging herpestid, the meerkat, Suricata suricatta. In yellow mongooses, the presence of conspecifics during foraging—an infrequent occurrence—reduced their foraging time and
success and increased individual vigilance, contrary to the classical group-size effect. Comparing the two herpestids, sociality
did not appear to affect overt vigilance or survival rates but influenced general patterns of predator avoidance. Whereas
meerkats relied on communal vigilance, costly vigilance postures, and auditory warnings against danger, yellow mongooses avoided
predator detection by remaining close to safe refuges and increasing “low-cost” vigilance, which did not interfere with foraging.
We suggest that foraging group size in herpestids is constrained by species-distinct vigilance patterns, in addition to habitat

Purpose
The quality of fish produced in ponds needs to be ensured. Indeed, pond is often strongly connected to an agricultural watershed, and pesticides are a main health and environmental issue of concern. In this context, the purpose of this study is to highlight the management practices which could impact the pesticide contamination profiles in edible fish and to give recommendations for better practices.Methods
A principal component analysis, coupled to a hierarchical cluster analysis, was performed to evaluate temporal evolution of contamination profiles and to assess variability among fish species and among sites according to watershed characteristics. The explicative variables correspond to muscular concentrations of pesticides (azoxystrobin, clomazone, diflufenican, carbendazim, isoproturon, metazachlor, napropamid) in three species of fish (Perca fluviatilis, Cyprinus carpio and Rutilus rutilus), caught in five ponds during two sampling campaigns. Management data are added variables in order to discuss about parameters suspected to be implicated in the contamination profiles recorded.Results
This work shows that high amounts of pesticides applied, short crop rotation durations and bare soil practices led to contamination of sediments and fish and were associated to a “bad” management of watershed. Breeding fish that had low masses and establishing the fishing period at the end of winter seemed to be “bad” management of pond. Aggravating topological parameters were big watershed coupled to small pond and high proportions of sand soils in the watershed.Conclusions
Reducing amounts of pesticide used (e.g. policy agency plans, farmer acceptance), favouring long-term rotations and inter-cultures, adapting pond creation and fish farming practices to watershed management and topography all could reduce pesticide levels in edible fish and contribute to a better sustainability of the extensive fish farming in pond. 相似文献44.

Following a global trend, the new policy goals emphasize the need to protect rather than to use the ability of ecosystems
to recover from disturbances. This necessitates the adoption of response measurements to quantify ecological condition and
monitor ecological change. Response monitoring focuses on properties that are essential to the sustainability of the ecosystem.
These monitoring tools can be used to establish natural ranges of ecological change within ecosystems, as well as to quantify
conceptually acceptable and unacceptable ranges of change. Through a framework of biological criteria and biological impairment
standards, the results of response monitoring can become an integral part of future water resource management strategies in

ABSTRACT Air biofiltration is now under active consideration for the removal of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from polluted airstreams. To optimize this emerging environmental technology and to understand compound removal mechanisms, a biofilter packed with peat was developed to treat a complex mixture of VOCs: oxygenated, aromatic, and chlorinated compounds. The removal efficiency of this process was high. The maximum elimination capacity (ECmax) obtained was ~120 g VOCs/m3 peat/hr. Referring to each of the mixture's components, the ECmax showed the limits in terms of biodegradability of VOCs, especially for the halogenated compounds and xylene. A stratification of biodegradation was observed in the reactor. The oxygenated compounds were metabolized before the aromatic and halogenated ones. Two assumptions are suggested. There was a competition between bacterial communities. Different communities colonized the peat-based biofilter, one specialized for the elimination of oxygenated compounds, the others more specialized for elimination of aromatic and halogenated compounds. There was also substrate competition. Bacterial communities were the same over the height of the column, but the more easily biodegradable compounds were used first for the microorganism metabolism when they were present in the gaseous effluent. 相似文献

Decision makers responsible for natural resource management often complain that science delivers fragmented information that
is not useful at the scale of implementation. We offer a way of negotiating complex problems by putting forward a requisite
simplicity. A requisite simplicity attempts to discard some detail, while retaining conceptual clarity and scientific rigor,
and helps us move to a new position where we can benefit from new knowledge. We illustrate the above using three case studies:
elephant densities and vegetation change in a national park, the use of rules of thumb to support decision making in agriculture,
and the management of salt in irrigation. We identify potential requisite simplicities that can allow us to generate new understanding,

A method for a photochemically induced mineralization of CCl4 is described in which use is made of reductive radicals. The UVC-photolysis (254 nm) of H2O2 added to aqueous solutions of CCl4 is leading to the homolysis of the oxidant yielding hydroxyl radicals (HO) that subsequently react with added methanol to generate hydroxymethyl radicals (CH2OH). The latter radicals initiate mineralization of CCl4 by reductive C-Cl bond splitting. CHCl3, C2Cl4 and C2Cl6 were found as reaction intermediates, but are quantitatively depleted in a parallel oxidative reaction manifold leading to mineralization. Carbon dioxide radical anion, CO2(-), an intermediate in the mineralization pathway of methanol, is also shown to initiate the mineralization of CCl4 by reductive dechlorination. A reaction mechanism is proposed and validated with computer simulations of all the experimental results. 相似文献

PCP was, and in some countries still is, one of the most frequently used fungicides and pesticides, specially in wood preservation. The extensive use is correlated with contamination of water and soil and it is detected in several compartments of the food chain. Some Micromycetes are able to adsorb and degrade PCP, with two mechanisms involved: biosorption (including both adsorption and absorption) and biodegradation. Our work is focused on the biosorption alone and biodegradation‐biosorption of PCP by respectively denatured and living R.arrhizus and C.elegans fungi. Living fungi are cultivated in batch system and denaturation is obtained by drying (70°C) and grinding the fungi to a calibrated powder (200–400 μm). Kinetic studies are performed with 10 mg/1 PCP initial concentration. Adsorption capacity is measured at equilibrium concentration as high as about 400 mg/1 PCP. The results show that: PCP adsorption, for the two fungi, follows a two steps process. R. arrhizus dead and living biomasses are able to bind respectively, 75 and 55% of a 10 mg/1 PCP initial concentration in 1 hour contact time and then 75 and 100% in 96 hours. For C.elegans, 70 and 28% in 1 hour and in 96 hours 70 and 90%, respectively. The PCP binding by living fungi is higher than non living ones, but with a slower rate. The maximum PCP adsorption capacity is about 24 mg/g of R.arrhizus dried biomasses and 16 mg/g for C.elegans ones, in 48 hours contact time. Isotherm curves follow the Langmuir model. Desorption studies with methanol (to reuse biomasses) shows that it is a rapid phenomenon (about 100% in 24 hours for the two fungi). An industrial and economical process to depollute contaminated water by PCP is possible by using cheap fungal by‐products from fermentation industries. 相似文献

It is well-known that heavy metals brought by intensive pig slurry applications accumulate in the soil; because of their potential impact on the environment, studying their behaviour is of utmost interest. The Solepur process has been developed in Brittany (France) where pig farming causes serious environmental problems; it enables the soil to be used as a treatment medium to process pig slurry. Numerous pig slurry applications were performed from 1991 to 1995 on an experimental hydrologically-isolated field specially equipped to recover all the leachate. These applications approximately corresponded to the amount which might have been spread over one century. The Solepur process can be considered as a simulation model for what happens to metals in pig slurry under normal field conditions over a long period of time. This work measured the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, Fe and Cd in pig slurry, in soil and in drainage water, and the results are discussed. Total concentrations and speciation data within the three different compartments were analysed and showed that Cu and Zn accumulate in the surface layer, whereas other metals, such as Mn and Co, dissolve and are washed away in the leachate. The increase in the bioavailability and toxicity of these metals as well as their impact on the environment are discussed. 相似文献
