Inert materials such as Chromasorb W solid particles and glass fiber filters coated with palladium chloride (PdCl2) were developed to use as an adsorbent for a dry mercury vapor recovery process and as an analytical tool to measure the mercury concentration of a contaminated gas stream. The mercury removal capacity of the newly developed adsorbent was far more effective than existing materials and was found to depend on the PdCl2 content of the inert material and the gas superficial velocity through the packed bed. Hot chlorine was used to regenerate the spent adsorbing material. The effects of temperature, duration for regeneration, and the performance of the regenerated material were investigated. 相似文献

Abstract Factors are discussed that may limit injury from pesticides whether the victims are exposed occupationally, through other intentional uses, or simply accidently. Emphasis is placed on choice of methods fitted to the problems revealed by dependable vital statistics for each country. In general, good labeling of pesticides is the most important single factor in their safe use. Regulation of use combining agricultural advice to the farmer with surveillance of his practices in the handling of pesticides often is the best way to minimize occupational poisoning and restrict residues on crops brought to market. To be successful, these and other aspects of education must be directed toward the improvement of human health. International organizations may be the best source of practical solutions simply because of the range of their experience. 相似文献

Abstract: Relatively few studies have examined the ecological effects of group-selection timber harvesting, and nearly all have been short-term and have lacked experimental manipulations that allow pre- and posttreatment comparisons. We have been documenting the effects of a group-selection timber harvest on bird abundance in a Maine forest for 24 years (preharvest, 1983–1987; postharvest, 1988–2006). Here we characterized the trends in bird abundance over the first 20 years of the study in the managed and control halves of the 40-ha study area. Species responses to the group-selection harvest were idiosyncratic, but in general the mature-forest bird community was retained and species dependent on early successional habitat temporarily (≤8 years) benefited. The Eastern Wood-Pewee ( Contopus virens ) , Winter Wren ( Troglodytes troglodytes ) , Pine Warbler ( Dendroica pinus ) , and White-throated Sparrow ( Zonotrichia albicollis ) increased in abundance in the managed half of the study area following timber harvest, whereas the Veery ( Catharus fuscescens ) decreased. The Black-and-White Warbler ( Mniotilta varia ) , Nashville Warbler ( Vermivora ruficapilla ) , and Common Yellowthroat ( Geothlypis trichas ) responded positively to harvesting, as indicated by decreases in abundance in the control area and more protracted declines or stable abundances in the managed area. This study constitutes the longest experimental investigation to date of the effects of a group-selection harvest on birds and thus provides important information on the strength, direction, and duration of temporal changes in bird populations following forest management. 相似文献

Estimating freshwater turtle mortality rates and population declines following hook ingestion 下载免费PDF全文
Freshwater turtle populations are susceptible to declines following small increases in the mortality of adults, making it essential to identify and understand potential threats. Freshwater turtles ingest fish hooks associated with recreational angling, and this is likely a problem because hook ingestion is a source of additive mortality for sea turtles. We used a Bayesian‐modeling framework, observed rates of hook ingestion by freshwater turtles, and mortality of sea turtles from hook ingestion to examine the probability that a freshwater turtle in a given population ingests a hook and subsequently dies from it. We used the results of these analyses and previously published life‐history data to simulate the effects of hook ingestion on population growth for 3 species of freshwater turtle. In our simulation, the probability that an individual turtle ingests a hook and dies as a result was 1.2–11%. Our simulation results suggest that this rate of mortality from hook ingestion is sufficient to cause population declines. We believe we have identified fish‐hook ingestion as a serious yet generally overlooked threat to the viability of freshwater turtle populations. 相似文献

In honeybees, as in other highly eusocial species, tasks are performed by individual workers, but selection for worker task
phenotypes occurs at the colony level. We investigated the effect of colony-level selection for pollen storage levels on the
foraging behavior of individual honeybee foragers to determine (1) the relationship between genotype and phenotypic expression
of foraging traits at the individual level and (2) how genetically based variation in worker task phenotype is integrated
into colony task organization. We placed workers from lines selected at the colony level for high or low pollen stores together
with hybrid workers into a common hive environment with controlled access to resources. Workers from the selected lines showed
reciprocal variation in pollen and nectar collection. High-pollen-line foragers collected pollen preferentially, and low-
pollen-line workers collected nectar, indicating that the two tasks covary genetically. Hybrid workers were not intermediate
in phenotype, but instead showed directional dominance for nectar collection. We monitored the responses of workers from the
selected strains to changes in internal (colony) and external (resource) stimulus levels for pollen foraging to measure the
interaction between genotypic variation in foraging behavior and stimulus environment. Under low-stimulus conditions, the
foraging group was over-represented by high-pollen-line workers. However, the evenness in distribution of the focal genetic
groups increased as foraging stimuli increased. These data are consistent with a model where task choice is a consequence
of genetically based response thresholds, and where genotypic diversity allows colony flexibility by providing a range of
stimulus thresholds.

All frogs are assumed to jump in a similar manner by rapidly extending hindlimbs during the propulsive phase and rotating the limbs forward during flight in order to land forelimbs first. However, studies of jumping behavior are lacking in the most primitive living frogs of the family Leiopelmatidae. These semi-aquatic or terrestrial anurans retain a suite of plesiomorphic morphological features and are unique in using an asynchronous (trot-like) rather than synchronous “frog-kick” swimming gait of other frogs. We compared jumping behavior in leiopelmatids to more derived frogs and found that leiopelmatids maintain extended hindlimbs throughout flight and landing phases and do not land on adducted forelimbs. These “belly-flop” landings limit the ability for repeated jumps and are consistent with a riparian origin of jumping in frogs. The unique behavior of leiopelmatids shows that frogs evolved jumping before they perfected landing. Moreover, an inability to rapidly cycle the limbs may provide a functional explanation for the absence of synchronous swimming in leiopelmatids. 相似文献
