The present work seeks to assess the sustainability of different solar photovoltaic (SPV) electricity-generating systems based upon energy, environment and economics. The sustainability indicators evaluated for energy, environment and economics are electrical output, life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and life-cycle cost of electricity generated per kilowatt hour. The selected SPV-based electricity generation technologies for sustainability evaluation are amorphous, monocrystalline and polycrystalline at different locations and tilt angles across India. For SPV systems, most of the emissions are the result of electricity use during manufacturing. In these cases, an average grid mix for the region of manufacture is typically used to calculate energy use and emissions. Based upon these three indicators, a figure of merit (FM) has been proposed. The results proposed that polycrystalline gives the maximum electrical output, minimum GHG emission, minimum cost and maximum FM at a radiation level of 6 kWh/m2/day with latitude and tilt angle of 34° and 35°, respectively. This work will be helpful to users of solar energy, academicians, researchers and other concerned persons, in understanding the importance, severity and benefits obtained by the application and implementation of the SPV electricity-generating systems. 相似文献

Natural background gamma radiation and radioactivity concentrations were investigated from 2003 to 2005 in Kinta District, Perak, Malaysia. Sample locations were distant from any ‘amang’ processing plants. The external gamma dose rates ranged from 39 to 1039 nGy h−1. The mean external gamma dose rate was 222 ± 191 nGy h−1. Small areas of relatively enhanced activity were located having external gamma dose rates of up to 1039 ± 104 nGy h−1. The activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K were analyzed by using a high-resolution co-axial HPGe detector system. The activity concentration ranges were 12–426 Bq kg−1 for 238U, 19–1377 Bq kg−1 for 232Th and <19–2204 Bq kg−1 for 40 K. Based on the radioactivity levels determined, the gamma-absorbed dose rates in air at 1 m above the ground were calculated. The calculated dose rates and measured dose rates had a good correlation coefficient, R of 0.94. To evaluate the radiological hazard of the natural radioactivity, the radium equivalent activity, the gamma-absorbed dose rate and the mean population weighted dose rate were calculated. Commonly occurring natural events become natural disasters when they affect the population through death and injury, and/or
through the destruction of natural and physical capital on which people rely for their livelihood and quality of life. Climate
change plays a role in that it tends to increase the frequency and intensity of weather-related natural disasters. Additionally,
climate change may put people at risk by influencing access to water, coastal flooding, disease and hunger, and leaving them
with a more degraded environment, leading, in turn, to increased vulnerability. The purpose of this paper is to present a
review and synthesis of the literature and case studies addressing differential impacts of climate change-related natural
disasters on a society and its economy. Developed and developing countries show different vulnerabilities to natural disasters.
Even within countries, impacts vary significantly across population and economic sectors. When losses from natural disasters
are large, their cumulative effect can have notable macroeconomic impacts, which feed back to further pronounce existing income
inequalities and lower income levels. Impacts tend to be most pronounced for women, the young and elderly, and people of ethnic
or racial minorities.

Deicers currently used for aircraft deicing, including ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, pose significant threats to surface waters, as a result of high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and toxicity to aquatic organisms. Oxidized starch may provide a less toxic deicer with lower BOD. The freezing point depression of starch formulations oxidized using hydrogen peroxide and catalysts (i.e., catalyzed hydrogen peroxide [H2O2] propagations-CHP) was 28 degrees C, and viscosities similar to those of commercial deicers were achieved after post-treatment with granular activated carbon. The most effective oxidized starch formulation exerted a 5-day BOD up to 6 times lower than glycol deicers (103 versus 400 to 800 g O2/L). Toxicity to Ceriodaphnia dubia for this formulation (48-hour lethal concentration, 50% [LC50] of 2.73 g/L) was greater than pure propylene glycol (13.1 g/ L), but lower than propylene glycol deicer formulations (1.02 g/L). Organic acids were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry as the primary constituents in the oxidized starch solution. The proposed deicing system would provide effective deicing while exerting minimal environmental effects (e.g., lower toxicity to aquatic organisms and lower BOD). Air pollution is a major environmental problem in urban areas worldwide. Delhi, the capital city of India, is no exception
to the universal pattern of deteriorating urban air quality with concentration of pollutants being well above the recommended
WHO levels. The magnitude and urgency of the problem as a global environmental issue needs a systematic understanding of the
potential causes of pollution and their contribution to air quality. In the present study, ambient air quality data (1987–2006)
of SO2, NO2, SPM, and RSPM were analyzed to asses the changing air quality in the study area and to evaluate the effect of measures taken
to control it. The primary data were collected from 1,583 households to examine the relationship between outdoor and indoor
pollution level. Based on the data, the current study concludes that despite the implementation of different pollution-controlling
measures, the pollutants, especially the particulate pollutants, were well above the standard limits set by CPCB. Integration
between technological and social approach of urban planning is required to mitigate and manage urban environmental problems
