Photochemical oxidant injury to ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws) is a severe problem in the southern California mountains. Three-year-old ponderosa pines fumigated in controlled environment chambers with ozone at 0.15, 0.30, or 0.45 ppm had apparent photosynthesis rates reduced by 10, 70, and 85%, respectively, after 30 days exposure. A fumigation with 0.30 ppm ozone for 33 days depressed the cold perchloric acid extracted polysaccharides of both current and one-year-old needles by 40%. The 80% ethanol soluble sugar concentration of current year, ozone-injured needles increased 16% and that of the one-year-old needles decreased slightly. Both carbohydrate fractions of control trees in carbon-filtered air increased moderately. Higher, endogenous concentrations of ascorbic acid in needles did not protect the tissue from ozone injury. Apparent photosynthesis rate was a sensitive index for ozone dosage response. Needle carbohydrate depletion probably induces premature abscission.  相似文献

This paper reports on the research program undertaken by the State of New Jersey to determine those tests and instruments which can be used by authorized state agencies for the enforcement of diesel smoke emissions. The state agencies under consideration for the enforcement of diesel smoke emissions are the following: (1) The Division of Motor Vehicles, in its system of state owned inspection stations, will be able to inspect all diesel-powered trucks, and tractors which are registered in New Jersey. (2) The Public Utilities Commission will be able to inspect at their home garages all buses registered in the State. (3) The New Jersey State Police will be able to inspect diesel-powered vehicles on the road. It was decided that the maximum inspection time for each vehicle was not to exceed one minute. On the basis of the one minute per vehicle requirement, eight different tests were evaluated to determine which ones correlated well with normal vehicle operation. These tests included acceleration of a fixed external inertia, free acceleration of only the moving parts of the engine, three ramp tests, a test in which a heavy vehicle was towed, and a driving test in which the vehicle being tested was actually accelerated. The results of tests demonstrated that the modified free acceleration method correlates reasonably well with a loaded steady state cycle, distinguishes the high emitters and is simple to perform. Consequently, the free acceleration test method is recommended for use in inspection stations and on the road. Finally, nearly two hundred vehicles have been tested by this procedure to determine present and potential levels of diesel smoke emissions. Another phase of the program consisted of the determination of smoke measuring techniques and instrumentation. The use and design of smokemeters were extensively investigated, as well as the use of the visual and photographic techniques. Of the various smokemeters tested for this application, several measured smoke satisfactorily in the laboratory, but none were found adequate for field use; they either lacked portability or were unstable due to the deposition of soot on the optics. At the time of writing, specifications for the necessary smokemeter have been drafted and published for bid to interested manufacturers.  相似文献

Instruments capable of measuring in situ numbers of particles within specific size ranges covering a particle-diameter spectrum of approximately 0.001 – 10 microns have been employed to continuously monitor the concentration and size-distribution of atmospheric aerosols. The monitoring site was a television tower located on the boundary between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Air samples were drawn from 70, 170, and 500 feet above ground level and analyzed with optical, electrical, and condensation particle counters to obtain a number-size distribution within the 0.001 – 10 micron size range. In addition to the measurement of particle number and size, several micrometeorological parameters were simultaneously monitored. In a study of the ozone-induced needle blight of eastern white pine in central New York, acute injuries naturally induced on field trees during a year of relatively low ozone concentrations (1 966) were compared with injuries induced during a year of higher concentrations (1967). Injuries were more frequent and severe and were associated with higher mean ozone concentrations in 1967 than in 1966. Characteristic symptoms were induced on foliage of pine branches exposed to controlled doses of ozone as low as 7 ± 1 pphm for four hours or 3 ± 1 pphm for 48 hours. Such doses were equalled or exceeded two and four times, respectively, in the field during the 1 967 season. Ozone sensitivity of pine needle tissue was increased by fumigation in atmospheres containing water mist. High concentrations of ozone (40-60 pphm) caused general injury of foliage of both ozone-susceptible and resistant trees; the symptoms were unlike those found in the field or caused by fumigation with low concentrations of ozone.  相似文献

The use of soda ash liquor to scrub SO2 rich power plant flue gases was studied using an Airetron pilot scrubber with a maximum capacity of 3000 cfm. The relative effects of the major operating variables— temperature, soda ash concentration, and the gas/liquid flow ratio—on the absorption phenomenon were determined. Orthogonal factorial experiments were used to derive a response function relating mass transfer values to operating variables. The economics of a full scale NSSC installation are discussed.  相似文献

A comprehensive analysis of inspection maintenance programs is proposed. Effectiveness, costs to the state and to the individual, distribution of cost and benefits, and political and administrative feasibility are examined. Effectiveness is probably the most difficult aspect to project because of changes in design and consequences of maintenance repair on performance. However, using sensitivity analysis, substantial reductions in hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are foreseen, along with a slight increase in NOx emissions.

The cost to the state to administer the program is estimated to be between $2.00 and $2.50 per vehicle, which could be covered by the inspection fee. The other direct costs for the driver, lost time, travel, and repairs, may be offset by fuel and tuneup savings which could amount to as much as 50% of the repair bill. Analysis of distribution costs and indirect social consequences cannot be completed until additional information about the effect of income on maintenance is generated. Politically the program is feasible but depends on public support which in turn is sensitive to direct repair costs. Administratively the program suffers greatly if private repair facilities do not have enough adequately trained mechanics.

It is concluded that the benefits of an inspection program do not convincingly outweigh the high costs, possible adverse social impacts, and public opposition and that other alternatives should be examined.  相似文献

The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those individuals concerned with the measurement of the size distribution of particulate matter in air. The light scattering instrument described herein is characterized by the fact that it can accurately size particles almost independently of their index of refraction. The basic concept involves the simultaneous measurement of the intensity of light scattered by a single particle at two small scattering angles. The ratio of the two intensities is directly related io ine size of ihe pariicle, and for scattering angles of 5° and 10° the effective range of the instrument is 0.2 to 4 μm. The air flows through the optical system at such a rate that approximately 25 μs are required to determine the size of each particle, and concentrations as high as 104 particles/cc can be measured without dilution and without serious coincidence effects. By employing a multichannel analyzer as the data storage and readout device it is possible to detect changes in particulate size distribution within a few seconds. Calibration of the instrument has been performed using polystyrene latex spheres and materials having a wide range of index of refraction and shape including carbon black, iron oxide and spores.  相似文献

This paper presents a simplified analysis to determine the variables that affect the empirical correlation factor used in the lead peroxide method. The rate of sulfation has been determined from two different models. In the first model, the mass transfer rate is calculated from the gas phase resistance alone whereas in the second model, the diffusion resistance in the gel phase is assumed to be the rate limiting step. Although the gas phase and the gel phase resistances may be both important in the actual case, it has been found that the correlation factor based on the first model is adequate to describe general experimental observations. Reasonable agreement has been obtained between the measured and the calculated va|ue of the correlation factor.  相似文献

The EPA Train for this measurement originally comprised two segments: the front half and the impinger train downstream from the filter proper.
