Effect of salinity on the feeding rate and parthenogenetic reproduction of asexual females of the cladoceran Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin was studied. Short-term (10 h) grazing experiments were conducted using Isochrysis galbana as feed at 5, 17, 25 and 30 psu salinity. Gut pigment concentration showed a significantly higher rate of feeding at lower
salinities. Survival, growth, maturity attainment and neonate production of asexual females reared in the above four test
salinities indicated preference for lower salinities (5 and 17 psu). The mean size of adult females decreased from 909 to
593 μm, mean life span from 24 to 5 d, mean neonate production from 12 to 2 and mean size of neonates from 434 to 400 μm as
the salinity increased from 5 to 30 psu. Salinity variations also affected the size and age of primiparous females. Resting
egg formation and sexual reproduction did not occur at the tested salinities. The results indicate that D. celebensis is adapted to low saline, estuarine environments.

Meganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars)is a pelagic crustacean that plays a key role in marine food webs of North Atlantic Ocean and marginal seas. We
studied eight population samples collected in the European Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. By means of single strand conformation
polymorphism analysis (SSCP) and direct sequencing, we investigated a segment of 158 base pairs of the mitochondrial gene
coding for the subunit 1 of NADH dehydrogenase. We found 12 sequence variants among the 385 individuals studied. Analysis
of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that 14.75% of the total genetic variability was explained by differences between populations,
thus indicating absence of panmixia for these populations. Pairwise comparisons revealed three distinct genetic pools: the
first one represented by Cadiz Bay, the second one by the Ligurian Sea, and the third one included all the NE Atlantic samples.
We also investigated one population from the Alboran Sea (within the Mediterranean basin, east of the Strait of Gibraltar).
This population was found to be genetically intermediate between the NE Atlantic samples and the Ligurian sample, suggesting
that the restriction to the gene flow is not associated with the Strait of Gibraltar, but possibly with the Oran–Almeria oceanographic
front. The present work indicates that M. norvegica, although endowed with a high dispersal capacity because of its pelagic habit, can develop separate breeding units inside
the same oceanic basin (the Atlantic). Furthermore, the Ligurian sample should be considered as a distinct evolutionary entity,
separated from the Atlantic population.

Effects of dissolved ammonium addition and host feeding with Artemia salina on photoacclimation of the hermatypic coral Stylophora pistillata 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6

Effects of nutrient treatments on photoacclimation of the hermatypic coral Stylophora pistillata (Esper) were studied. Studies on photoacclimation of colonies from different light regimes in the field were evaluated and
used to design laboratory experiments. Coral colonies were collected in the Gulf of Eilat (Israel) from January to March 1993.
Exterior branches of colonies from different depths (1 to 40 m) displayed different trends in production characteristics at
reduced and very low levels of illumination. From 24 ± 3% to 12 ± 2% of incident surface photosynthetic active radiation (PARo), zooxanthella population density and chlorophyll a+c per 106 zooxanthellae increased, a trend seen in the range of light levels optimal for coral growth (90 to 30% PARo). The P
max of CO2 per 106 zooxanthellae decreased, while P
max of CO2 per 103 polyps increased, indicating an increase in zooxanthella population density at low light levels. Proliferous zooxanthella
frequency (PZF, a measure of zooxanthella division) declined significantly at light levels <18 ± 3% PARo. At the lowest levels of illumination (<5% PARo), zooxanthella population density decreased, as did the PZF; chl a+c per 106 zooxanthellae was unchanged. In 28-d experiments, exterior coral branches from the upper surfaces of colonies from 3 m depth
(65 ± 4% PARo) were incubated in aquaria under bright (80 to 90% PARo), reduced (20 to 30% PARo), and extremely low (2 to 4% PARo) light intensities. At each light intensity, the corals were maintained in three feeding treatments: sea water (SW); ammonium
enriched SW (SW + N); SW with Artemia salina nauplii (SW + A). An increase in P
max of CO2 per 103 polyps was found in corals acclimated to reduced light (20 to 30% PARo) in nutrient-enriched SW, while in SW, where the increase in zooxanthella population density was smaller, it did not occur.
Nutrient enrichments (SW + N at 2 to 4% PARo and SW + A at 20 to 30% PARo) increased zooxanthella population density, but had no effect on chl a+c per 106 zooxanthellae. Acclimation for 14 d to reduced (10 to 20% PARo) and extremely low (1 to 3% PARo) light intensities shifted 14C photoassimilation into glycerol and other compounds (probably glycerides), rather than sugars. Both ammonium addition and
feeding with Artemia salina nauplii resulted in an increase in photosynthetic assimilation of 14C into amino acids. We conclude that acclimation to reduced light consists of two processes: an increase in photosynthetic
pigments and in zooxanthella population density. Both processes require nitrogen, the increase in zooxanthella population
density needing more; this adaptation is therefore limited in nitrogen-poor sea water.

The reproductive biology of female Penaeus japonicus Bate was investigated in the Ariake Sea and Tachibana Bay (located outside the Ariake Sea), Japan from 1994 to 1996. Interannual,
seasonal, individual female body size and spatial influences on the incidence of spawning were examined. The proportion of
inseminated females, increased with increasing body size up to 170 mm body length (BL) and decreased thereafter. The minimum
size at maturity was similar between years; 130 to 140 mm BL. The minimum size of individuals with developing ovaries or spermatophores
differed from that of ripe females by 20 to 25 mm. Spawning occurred in the central part of the Ariake Sea and Tachibana Bay
but rarely in the inner part. P. japonicus had a clear reproductive cycle. Spawning started earlier and ended later, occurring from mid-May to mid-October, in the eastern
central part of and outside of the Ariake Sea compared with the western central part, where spawning occurred from mid-June
to mid-September. Spawning dynamics differed across seasons, body sizes and areas but not across years. The seasonal peak
in the proportion of ripe females varied with body size. In small individuals (130 to 169 mm BL), no peak was observed, whereas
in large individuals (>170 mm BL) the proportion of ripe individuals peaked in June. The proportion of ripe individuals increased
with increasing body size and was high outside the Ariake Sea. Factors causing the variation in spawning dynamics are discussed.

Phylogenetic analyses of the left domain of the mitochondrial DNA control-region sequence have been used to examine the relationships
among species of the genus Merluccius (Rafinesque, 1810), and to compare these with hypotheses based on morphological, meristic and allozyme characters. Analysis
of aligned sequences revealed that transition bias was much lower than in mammalian mtDNA, and that nucleotide composition
of control-region sequences was biased toward A and T. We have roughly calibrated a molecular clock for the genus, based on
the rise of the Isthmus of Panamá, which is believed to have created a barrier to dispersal between marine species of the
Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Our mtDNA-based phylogeny was highly congruent with allozyme-based phylogenies, but poorly so
with a previously described phylogeny based on morphology. Specifically, our phylogeny resolved two well-supported principal
clades, one of American (west Atlantic and east Pacific) species and the other of Euro–African (east Atlantic) species. This
suggests an evolutionary history during which the ancestral lineage of Merluccius was divided between two geographic regions, with subsequent dispersal and vicariant events resulting in the evolution and
distribution of extant taxa. However, the relationships between some taxa within the American clade could not be resolved.
We suggest that this is consistent with an hypothesis of a rapid origin and radiation of these taxa.

The benthic response to a plume front was studied in two areas of the northern Adriatic (Mediterranean Sea) differently influenced
by the Po River freshwater input. Sediment samples were collected in June 1996 and February 1997 from 12 stations. The adopted
sampling strategy was able to identify the front line in real time by satellite images and to locate sampling stations along
an inner–outer plume gradient in order to cover the benthic area beneath the river plume, where enhanced biological production
was expected, and open-sea sediments not directly influenced by freshwater inputs. Meiofaunal parameters were compared to
the physical conditions and to phytodetritus inputs, organic matter accumulation and bacterial secondary production. The sediments
of the Adriatic Sea were characterised by high concentrations of phytopigments (0.6 to 13.9 μg g−1 for chlorophyll a and 1.2 to 17.7 μg g−1 for phaeopigments) and biopolymeric organic carbon (0.15 to 3.02 mg g−1). The plume system extended for a large sector of the northern Adriatic. In the northern area, a large and highly dynamic
plume area was coupled with a sediment organic matter concentration significantly higher than in open-sea sediments. In the
southern sector, where the plume area and the front line did not change markedly during the year, plume–benthic coupling was
evident only in the sediments beneath the front, and corresponded to phaeopigment accumulation. Bacterial parameters and secondary
production were high and significantly higher in the frontal area than at open-sea stations. Meiofauna density (1342 to 8541
ind. 10 cm−2) did not change either by season or between areas and was significantly correlated with phaeopigments and bacterial secondary
production. Meiofauna displayed different responses to plume inputs in the two sampling areas. In the northern sector, meiofauna
density was coupled with organic matter distribution and displayed highest values beneath the plume. In the southern sector,
the densities of copepods, turbellarians and kinorhynchs displayed highest values under the front in summer, and the same
applied to total meiofauna density in winter. Juvenile decapods and copepod nauplii significantly increased their densities
in sediments beneath the front. Data presented in the present study suggest that plume inputs and frontal systems, enhancing
phytodetritus accumulation and benthic bacterial response, might influence density, composition and distribution of meiofaunal
assemblages. As river plumes are highly variable systems affecting the trophic characteristics of the sediments underneath,
their dynamics should be considered when analysing mesoscale spatial changes of meiofaunal assemblages.

Western sandpiper (Calidris mauri) predation was examined by concurrent experiments and direct observations of foraging behaviour on high intertidal mudflats
of the Fraser River estuary, British Columbia. Western sandpipers foraged by either “pecking” on the surface (64% of observational
time) or probing into sediment (29%). The first experiment (probe-mark method) consisted of collecting small-volume cores
(21.2 cm3) of probed (experimental) and non-probed (control) sediment on the tidal flat, following a 22.5-min feeding period. The second
experiment (exclosure method) involved deploying exclosures immediately prior to the feeding period and subsequent collection
of cores from inside (control) and outside (experimental) the exclosures. Sediment cores were analysed for both macrofaunal
and meiofaunal size fractions. Comparisons between macro- and meiofaunal invertebrate densities in experimental and control
sediments revealed significant differences, attributed to shorebird predation, for both experiments. The probe-mark experiment
detected the removal of large infaunal polychaetes (∼ 20 mm), while the exclosure experiment showed depletion of epifaunal
harpacticoid copepods (0.063–0.5 mm). Predation on macrofaunal cumaceans was detected in both experiments. Invertebrates selected
by western sandpipers neither fell within traditional infaunal size classifications (macro- vs. meiofauna; 500 μm delineation)
nor corresponded to the highest densities of taxa. Rather, inference from experimental results and observations is that western
sandpipers forage in two modes, by: (1) surface gleaning of epibenthic copepods and cumaceans in the macro- and meiofaunal
size ranges and (2) selective probing for larger infauna, such as polychaetes. These findings were facilitated by the combination
of methodologies employed.

The pathway for the flow of salt-marsh grass production into marsh food-webs is still not well defined. We compared the abilities
of three marsh macroinvertebrates [salt marsh periwinkles, Littoraria irrorata (Say) (=Littorina irrorata), salt-marsh coffee-bean snails, Melampus bidentatus (Say); and a talitrid amphipod, Uhlorchestia spartinophila Bounsfield and Heard] to access standing-dead leaves of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora Loisel). The invertebrates were incubated with naturally-decaying leaves, and the rates of removal of organic matter and
living fungal biomass (ergosterol) were measured. The impact of invertebrate activity upon fungal growth rates was measured
as rates of fungal-membrane synthesis (incorporation of radioacetate into ergosterol). The removal rates of organic leaf biomass
per mg individual biomass were highest for amphipods (700 μg mg−1 d−1) and lowest for periwinkles (90 μg mg−1 d−1), but the relatively large biomass of the snails made their removal rates per individual greater than those of amphipods.
Net removal of ergosterol by all three invertebrates was >50% for yellow-brown (early-decay) leaf blades. For fully-brown
(advanced-decay) blades, >50% removal of ergosterol was found only for periwinkles; exposure to coffee-bean snails and amphipods
resulted in a net ergosterol reduction of ≤20%. The lower net reduction of living fungal biomass by coffee-bean snails and
amphipods may have been due to fungal-growth stimulation (2.3-fold stimulation in coffee-bean snails and 1.5-fold stimulation
in amphipods). Grazing by periwinkles did not stimulate fungal growth, possibly because of its high intensity. Grazing by
these three salt-marsh shredders may affect marsh-grass shoot-decay in different ways. Periwinkles may abbreviate the period
of fungal production, and incorporate the decaying material relatively quickly into snail biomass and fecal-pellet rain to
the sediments. Coffee-bean snails and amphipods may enhance and prolong fungal production, along with the formation of fecal-pellet
rain. All three invertebrates fed preferentially on leaf blades rather than leaf sheaths, and feeding rates of gastropods
were higher during the night than during the day.

Evaluation of evolutionary mechanisms proposed to promote cooperative behavior depends on the relative influence of the behavior
on the reproductive success of individuals, the reproductive success of the group in which they interact behaviorally, and
the degree of gene correlation among cooperators. The genetic relationship within cooperative coalitions of female red howler
monkeys was examined for three populations with different densities and growth rates. Patterns of gene correlation change
within coalitions is documented using data from the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes, and long-term census monitoring. Differences
in fecundity and infant survivorship within and between groups of unrelated (rˉ=0) and related (rˉ≥ 0.25) females are compared. Females that emigrate from their natal groups form coalitions with other migrant females. These
coalitions attempt to establish a territory and, once successful in producing offspring, exclude other females from feeding
resources. Females in these coalitions had different mtDNA haplotypes and a genetically estimated mean r of 0, supporting demographic data on emigration patterns indicating that these females rarely have the opportunity to form
coalitions with kin. Patterns of recruitment and rate of matriline development within social groups supported behavioral data
indicating that females actively attempt to promote their own matriline as breeders over that of other females, and that some
matrilines are more successful at this than others. Mean r among females was significantly higher in coalitions established as social groups for several generations (rˉ=0.44). In these groups, females all shared the same mtDNA haplotype, and mtDNA haplotype divergence was significantly higher
between than within groups. Females in coalitions with kin had significantly higher reproductive success than females in unrelated
coalitions in all populations. This difference was not a function of coalition size, number of males, socionomic sex ratio,
or primiparity, although anecdotal evidence suggests that allomothering may compensate for inept new mothers in related coalitions
more often than in unrelated ones. Differences in territory quality could not be ruled out as a potential causal factor in
the saturated populations, but were unlikely in the low-density, growing population. There were substantial differences among
long-established coalitions in overall reproductive output in all three populations, and this was significantly correlated
with the number of breeding females. Increase in coalition size was a function of both group age and the behavioral tolerance
among females. Regardless of the underlying reasons for the patterns observed, reproductive success clearly increases with
degree of gene correlation among females within cooperative coalitions, and coalitions that recruit more daughters produce
more offspring. The nature of the cooperative relationship among group females directly influences both of these outcomes.
This is associated with substantial genetic differentiation among social groups within populations, creating conditions in
which genetic tendencies towards cooperative behavior can become tightly associated with group reproductive success.

Characteristics that influence male reproductive success on a lek of Lethrinops c.f. parvidens (Teleostei: Cichlidae) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Sexual selection has long been proposed as a mechanism leading to the diverse cichlid (Teleostei: Cichlidae) fauna of Lake
Malawi, Africa. Many of the shallow-water, sand-dwelling, bower-building cichlid species are particularly well suited for
studies of sexual selection because they participate in leks. Since females in lekking systems appear to acquire only genetic
material from their mates, it has been suggested that leks are ideal systems to study female mate choice. The objectives of
the investigation were to examine Lethrinops c.f. parvidens male bower characteristics (i.e., bower size and location) as well as other male characteristics (i.e., length, gular color,
and duration on the lek) for their influence on male mating success as measured by the number of visits, circles, and eggs
laid by females. These measures are nested in that a visit by a female may or may not lead to circling, and circling by a
female may or may not lead to egg-laying. We found increased bower height and higher numbers of conspecific neighbors (analogous
to shallow-water, near-shore bower positions) to be positively, significantly associated with the number of visits by females.
The only significant correlate with the number of circles was visits, and similarly circles was the only significant correlate
with the number of eggs laid. The R
2 value for the egg-laying regression was quite low (19.8%) compared with visits (54.3%) and circling (78.9%), suggesting that
females may be using additional cues, that we failed to measure, when in close proximity to males or simply that a small proportion
of the females were ready to spawn. Both indirect selection and direct selection pressure due to egg predation may have influenced
female choice on the lek.
