Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was originally tailored for restructuring rules and values regarding environmental protection, through interdisciplinary work. EIA has developed as a tool for decision-making for the implementation of projects which potentially pose significant environmental impacts. This paper reviews the sustainability and interdisciplinarity assumptions inherent in EIA. It illustrates through a case study of a proposed landfill extension in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, that these principles can arise more from informal knowledge processes than from legal ones. It can be shown that interdisciplinarity is often misunderstood as multidisciplinarity or simple knowledge clustering, and sustainability has no common definition amongst EIA practitioners, but that there predominates an understanding which delivers weak sustainability, driven primarily by social and economic goals. The conclusion is that EIA cannot achieve the original vision set out in the world's first legislation adopted in 1970 unless a learning-organization approach is taken whereby: the critical role of informal knowledge is recognized; informal knowledge is properly managed by EIA teams to engender a common understanding of sustainable development goals; interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary working practices are adopted. 相似文献

Soil pollution with toxic elements is a recurrent issue due to environmental disasters, fossil fuel burning, urbanization, and industrialization, which have contributed to soil contamination over the years. Therefore, the remediation of toxic metals in soil is always an important topic since contaminated soil can affect the environment, agricultural safety, and human health. Many remediation methods have been developed; however, it is essential to ensure that they are safe, and also take into account the limitation of each methodology (including high energy input and generation of residues). This scenario has motivated this review, where we explore soil contamination with arsenic, lead, mercury, and chromium and summarize information about the methods employed to remediate each of these toxic elements such as phytoremediation, soil washing, electrokinetic remediation, and nanoparticles besides elucidating some mechanisms involved in the remediation. Considering all the discussed techniques, nowadays, different techniques can be combined together in order to improve the efficiency of remediation besides the new approach of the techniques and the use of one technique for remediating more than one contaminant. 相似文献

The city of Bangalore in southern India is rapidly expanding, resulting in major transformations in land use, wetland management,
and the distribution of green spaces. This paper examines how transformations in land use and governance consequent to urbanization
can change people’s perceptions of and interactions with an urban ecological commons, using the case study of the Agara lake
in the south Indian city of Bangalore. In less than four decades, the landscape surrounding the lake has altered from a fundamentally
agricultural area, dependent on the lake for irrigation and drinking water, to a densely urbanized area where the lake is
used predominantly for recreation. A change in governance from community management to state management has sidelined the
fishers, fodder collectors and agricultural users who traditionally maintained this lake. The governmental agencies that are
supposed to maintain the lake are unable to do so due to a complex governance structure, with overlapping jurisdictions, compounded
by an ongoing litigation. Over the past decades, the lake has largely transitioned into an urban green space primarily used
for recreation and nature watching. This case study provides us with a broader understanding of how changes in governance
consequent to urbanization and city expansion can impact interactions between people and ecological commons in a rapidly growing

Aquatic macrophytes are a very important subject of study due to their capacity to restore polluted aquatic environments as they need high nutrient concentrations to develop. The present study aims to determine their temporal and physiological influence on the amount of total nitrogen, gross protein, P, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd, Pb and Cr absorbed by Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) in the River Apodi/Mossoró, RN, Brazil, identifying viable possibilities for the use of cultivated biomass. Results obtained from the parameters analyzed show that these substances are impacted by the temporality and physiology of Eichhornia crassipes. Leaves showed higher crude protein and macronutrients, while the content of micronutrients and toxic elements was higher in roots. It could, therefore, be utilized to improve water quality in the River Apodi/Mossoró. 相似文献
