Riparian forests are important for maintaining vertebrate species richness in the southwestern United States, but they have become restricted in distribution due to both historical and current management practices. In order to counteract continued loss of this habitat, several mitigation programs were developed in the middle Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. Three areas ranging from 50 to 140 ha were revegetated with native trees using pole planting and cattle exclosures, and changes in vegetation structure were quantified after 2, 3, and 5 years of growth. As expected, the older site contained the most heterogeneous mix of plant species and the greatest structural diversity. We compared year-round avian use of the revegetated sites with a mature cottonwood forest site of approximately 30 years of age. As the revegetated sites matured and salient habitat features changed, the population dynamics of individual avian species and patterns of guild structure varied. The older revegetated sites showed a greater similarity to the mature cottonwood site, suggesting that reclamation efforts established quality riparian habitats for birds in as little as 5 years. The revegetated sites appeared especially important for Neotropical-migrant birds. We suggest that a mosaic of riparian woodlands containing mixtures of native tree and shrub species of different size classes is necessary to maintain avian species richness in the middle Rio Grande drainage, and probably throughout the southwestern United States. 相似文献
Peat samples from four ombrotrophic and two minerotrophic peat bogs in New Brunswick, Canada, have been analyzed for polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/DF's) as well as other organochlorine compounds. Data from each bog show occasional low levels of 2,3,7,8-substituted tetra-through octachloro dioxins and furans. Mono-through trichlorodioxins and furans have also been identified.
A consistent pattern was observed among the TCDD's and TCDF's which was reproducible across all peat samples analyzed. A single TCDF isomer (2468-TCDF) predominates over all other isomers whereas two isomers of TCDD were prominent (1,3,6,8-TCDD and 1,3,7,9-TCDD). This distinct isomer pattern is present at all depths and is different from that of atmospheric deposition or known sources of PCDD/DF's (eg. fly ash, pulp and paper effluent etc). The pattern is replicated with in vitro oxidative coupling of 2,4-dichlorophenol at pH 2.9 using a commercially available chloroperoxidase from the fungus Caldariomyces fumago.
Significant incorporation of 36Cl-occurred in peat. Autoclaving decreased incorporation while adding casein hydrolysate increased it. The incorporation mirrored the metabolic activity (CO2 production) of samples consistent with organochlorine synthesis being due to biological activity.
Total Organic Halide (TOX) levels in peat show a wide range in values reaching ca. 1000 ppm at mid-depth in the ombrotrophic Kelly's Bog. TOX in Kelly's Bog occurs at all depths and, since the topography probably excludes leaching from surrounding areas, a local origin of organochlorines is suggested.
Chloroform and a range of chlorinated aromatic compounds (chlorophenols, chlorophenoxy and chlorobenzoic acid derivatives) have also been identified in peat.
Our findings to date are consistent with hypothesis for a biogenic origin for at least some of the organochlorine compounds, including some of the PCDD/DF's, found in peat bogs. 相似文献
Primary sources of particulate matter (PM) were analyzed by suspending powdered samples into an aerosol laser ablation mass spectrometer (LAMS). PM sources studied included vehicle exhaust particulates, dust from a non-ferrous smelter, cement powder, incinerator fly ash, two coal fly ash samples, and two soils. Marker peaks signified certain PM source sectors: construction particles could be distinguished by abundant Ca and Ca compounds, fuel combustion was marked by elemental carbon clusters, and nonferrous industrial particles showed inorganic As, Cu, Pb, Zn, and SOx. In addition to the distinction between particles from these different source sectors, mass spectral results also showed that for a single source, different particle types existed, and among different sources within a sector, similar spectra were present. The aerosol LAMS results show the difficulty in differentiating among separate fly ash sources as well as among different soil samples. A particle class balance receptor model that measures the amount of specific particle types rather than the amount of a chemical component is suggested as a means of source apportionment when particle spectra with overlapping source possibilities occur. The assumptions and limitations of receptor modeling aerosol LAMS data are also described. In particular, methods need to be developed to account for the contribution of secondary sources. 相似文献
Using a turtle-borne camera system, changing flipper beat frequency and amplitude were measured in five diving green turtles
(Chelonia mydas Linnaeus 1758) in the Bahía de los Angeles, Mexico (28°58′N, 113°33′W). These observations were made between June and August
2002. Turtles worked hardest (i.e., had the highest flipper beat frequency and amplitude) at the start of descents when positive
buoyancy is predicted to oppose their forward motion. During the later part of descents, turtles worked less hard in line
with opposing buoyancy forces being reduced. For example, flipper beat frequency declined from about 60–80 beats min−1 at the start of descent to around 25–40 beats min−1 after 30 s of the descent. At the start of ascents the flipper beat frequency was around 30 beats min−1, lower than on descent, and declined as the ascent progressed with often passive gliding for the final few meters to the
surface. This pattern of effort during diving appears to apply across a range of marine reptiles, birds and mammals suggesting
that graded effort during descent and ascent is an optimum solution to minimising the cost of transport during diving. 相似文献
Objectives: The 2 objectives of this study are to (1) examine the rib and sternal fractures sustained by small stature elderly females in simulated frontal crashes and (2) determine how the findings are characterized by prior knowledge and field data. Methods: A test series was conducted to evaluate the response of 5 elderly (average age 76 years) female postmortem human subjects (PMHS), similar in mass and size to a 5th percentile female, in 30 km/h frontal sled tests. The subjects were restrained on a rigid planar seat by bilateral rigid knee bolsters, pelvic blocks, and a custom force-limited 3-point shoulder and lap belt. Posttest subject injury assessment included identifying rib cage fractures by means of a radiologist read of a posttest computed tomography (CT) and an autopsy. The data from a motion capture camera system were processed to provide chest deflection, defined as the movement of the sternum relative to the spine at the level of T8.?A complementary field data investigation involved querying the NASS-CDS database over the years 1997–2012. The targeted cases involved belted front seat small female passenger vehicle occupants over 40 years old who were injured in 25 to 35 km/h delta-V frontal crashes (11 to 1 o'clock). Results: Peak upper shoulder belt tension averaged 1,970 N (SD = 140 N) in the sled tests. For all subjects, the peak x-axis deflection was recorded at the sternum with an average of ?44.5 mm or 25% of chest depth. The thoracic injury severity based on the number and distribution of rib fractures yielded 4 subjects coded as Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 3 (serious) and one as AIS 5 (critical). The NASS-CDS field data investigation of small females identified 205 occupants who met the search criteria. Rib fractures were reported for 2.7% of the female occupants. Conclusions: The small elderly test subjects sustained a higher number of rib cage fractures than expected in what was intended to be a minimally injurious frontal crash test condition. Neither field studies nor prior laboratory frontal sled tests conducted with 50th percentile male PMHS predicted the injury severity observed. Although this was a limited study, the results justify further exploration of the risk of rib cage injury for small elderly female occupants. 相似文献
Toxic blooms of golden alga (Prymnesium parvum) have caused substantial ecological and economic harm in freshwater and marine systems throughout the world. In North America, toxic blooms have impacted freshwater systems including large reservoirs. Management of water chemistry is one proposed option for golden alga control in these systems. The main objective of this study was to assess physicochemical characteristics of water that influence golden alga presence, abundance, and toxicity in the Upper Colorado River basin (UCR) in Texas. The UCR contains reservoirs that have experienced repeated blooms and other reservoirs where golden alga is present but has not been toxic. We quantified golden alga abundance (hemocytometer counts), ichthyotoxicity (bioassay), and water chemistry (surface grab samples) at three impacted reservoirs on the Colorado River; two reference reservoirs on the Concho River; and three sites at the confluence of these rivers. Sampling occurred monthly from January 2010 to July 2011. Impacted sites were characterized by higher specific conductance, calcium and magnesium hardness, and fluoride than reference and confluence sites. At impacted sites, golden alga abundance and toxicity were positively associated with salinity‐related variables and blooms peaked at ~10°C and generally did not occur above 20°C. Overall, these findings suggest management of land and water use to reduce hardness or salinity could produce unfavorable conditions for golden alga. 相似文献
The honeybee has been the most important insect species for study of social behavior. The recently released draft genomic
sequence for the bee will accelerate honeybee behavioral genetics. Although we lack sufficient tools to manipulate this genome
easily, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that influence natural variation in behavior have been identified and tested for their
effects on correlated behavioral traits. We review what is known about the genetics and physiology of two behavioral traits
in honeybees, foraging specialization (pollen versus nectar), and defensive behavior, and present evidence that map-based
cloning of genes is more feasible in the bee than in other metazoans. We also present bioinformatic analyses of candidate
genes within QTL confidence intervals (CIs). The high recombination rate of the bee made it possible to narrow the search
to regions containing only 17–61 predicted peptides for each QTL, although CIs covered large genetic distances. Knowledge
of correlated behavioral traits, comparative bioinformatics, and expression assays facilitated evaluation of candidate genes.
An overrepresentation of genes involved in ovarian development and insulin-like signaling components within pollen foraging
QTL regions suggests that an ancestral reproductive gene network was co-opted during the evolution of foraging specialization.
The major QTL influencing defensive/aggressive behavior contains orthologs of genes involved in central nervous system activity
and neurogenesis. Candidates at the other two defensive-behavior QTLs include modulators of sensory signaling (Am5HT7 serotonin receptor, AmArr4 arrestin, and GABA-B-R1 receptor). These studies are the first step in linking natural variation in honeybee social behavior
to the identification of underlying genes. 相似文献
Total mercury concentration was analyzed in 171 lakes from pre-industrial (>30 cm depth; Hgpre-industrial) and present-day sediments (0.5–1 cm; Hgpresent-day). Numerous hot or cold spots of sediment mercury enrichment (Hg EF; Hgpre-industrial/Hgpresent-day) were evident as determined by local tests of autocorrelation, although in most cases, the maximum correlation among sites was not the nearest neighbor, indicating a strong influence of watershed characteristics. Hg EF was correlated with the area of open water (ha) (r = 0.91, p = 0.035), mine tailings (r = 0.94, p = 0.019), and organic deposits in surficial geology of the watershed (r = −0.91, p = 0.034). Through use of local rather than global regression coefficients, R2 increased from 0.20 (p = 0.005) to 0.60 (p = 0.013). A broad spatial pattern (>500 km) observed only in Hgpre-industrial was best explained by mean annual precipitation (shared variance = 3.5%), while finer spatial patterns only observed in Hgpresent-day and Hg EF were best explained by pH (average shared variance = 10.8%). 相似文献

Mason Valley Groundwater Model: Linking Surface Water and Groundwater in the Walker River Basin, Nevada. Journal of the American Water Resources Association (JAWRA) 46(3):554-573. DOI: 10.1111/j.1752-1688.2010.00434.x Abstract: An integrated surface water and groundwater model of Mason Valley, Nevada is constructed to replicate the movement of water throughout the different components of the demand side of water resources in the Walker River system. The Mason Valley groundwater surface water model (MVGSM) couples the river/drain network with agricultural demand areas and the groundwater system using MODFLOW, MODFLOW’s streamflow routing package, as well as a surface water linking algorithm developed for the project. The MVGSM is capable of simulating complex feedback mechanisms between the groundwater and surface water system that is not dependent on linearity among the related variables. The spatial scale captures important hydrologic components while the monthly stress periods allow for seasonal evaluation. A simulation spanning an 11-year record shows the methodology is robust under diverse climatic conditions. The basin-wide modeling approach predicts a river system generally gaining during the summer irrigation period but losing during winter months and extended periods of drought. River losses to the groundwater system approach 25% of the river’s annual budget. Reducing diversions to hydrologic response units will increase river flows exiting the model domain, but also has the potential to increase losses from the river to groundwater storage. 相似文献
Photochemical grid models are addressing an increasing variety of air quality related issues, yet procedures and metrics used to evaluate their performance remain inconsistent. This impacts the ability to place results in quantitative context relative to other models and applications, and to inform the user and affected community of model uncertainties and weaknesses. More consistent evaluations can serve to drive improvements in the modeling process as major weaknesses are identified and addressed. The large number of North American photochemical modeling studies published in the peer-reviewed literature over the past decade affords a rich data set from which to update previously established quantitative performance “benchmarks” for ozone and particulate matter (PM) concentrations. Here we exploit this information to develop new ozone and PM benchmarks (goals and criteria) for three well-established statistical metrics over spatial scales ranging from urban to regional and over temporal scales ranging from episodic to seasonal. We also recommend additional evaluation procedures, statistical metrics, and graphical methods for good practice. While we primarily address modeling and regulatory settings in the United States, these recommendations are relevant to any such applications of state-of-the-science photochemical models. Our primary objective is to promote quantitatively consistent evaluations across different applications, scales, models, model inputs, and configurations. The purpose of benchmarks is to understand how good or poor the results are relative to historical model applications of similar nature and to guide model performance improvements prior to using results for policy assessments. To that end, it also remains critical to evaluate all aspects of the model via diagnostic and dynamic methods. A second objective is to establish a means to assess model performance changes in the future. Statistical metrics and benchmarks need to be revisited periodically as model performance and the characteristics of air quality change in the future.
Implications: We address inconsistent procedures and metrics used to evaluate photochemical model performance, recommend a specific set of statistical metrics, and develop updated quantitative performance benchmarks for those metrics. We promote quantitatively consistent evaluations across different applications, scales, models, inputs, and configurations, thereby (1) improving the user’s ability to quantitatively place results in context and guide model improvements, and (2) better informing users, regulators, and stakeholders of model uncertainties and weaknesses prior to using results for policy assessments. While we primarily address U.S. modeling and regulatory settings, these recommendations are relevant to any such applications of state-of-the-science photochemical models. 相似文献
