Uptake properties of Ni2+ were examined for unmilled and milled paper sludge calcined at various temperatures to develop a new usage of waste paper sludge. Since paper sludge mainly consists of cellulose ([C6H(10)O5]n) fibers, calcite (CaCO3), kaolinite (Al2Si2O5(OH)4) and talc (Mg3Si(4)O(10)(OH)2), amorphous and crystalline CaO(MgO)-Al(2)O(3)-SiO(2) compounds are formed by calcining paper sludge. Wet and dry milling treatments were performed to accelerate solid-state reaction to form the above mentioned target compounds. The activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in soils from the area affected by uranium mining at Stara Planina Mountain in Serbia were studied and compared with the results obtained from an area with no mining activities (background area). In the affected area, the activity concentrations ranged from 1.75 to 19.2 mg kg?1 for uranium and from 1.57 to 26.9 mg kg?1 for thorium which is several-fold higher than those in the background area. The Th/U, K/U, and K/Th activity ratios were also determined and compared with data from similar studies worldwide. External gamma dose rate in the air due to uranium, thorium, and potassium at 1 m above ground level in the area affected by uranium mining was found to be 91.3 nGy h?1, i.e., about two-fold higher than that in background area. The results of this preliminary study indicate the importance of radiological evaluation of the area and implementation of remedial measures in order to prevent further dispersion of radionuclides in the environment.  相似文献

We conducted acute toxicity tests and sediment toxicity tests for copper pyrithione (CuPT) and a metal pyrithione degradation product, 2,2′-dipyridyldisulfide [(PS)2], using a marine polychaete Perinereis nuntia. The acute toxicity tests yielded 14-d LC50 concentrations for CuPT and (PS)2 of 0.06 mg L−1 and 7.9 mg L−1, respectively. Sediment toxicity tests resulted in 14-d LC50 concentrations for CuPT and (PS)2 of 1.1 mg kg−1 dry wt. and 14 mg kg−1 dry wt., respectively. In addition to mortality, sediment avoidance behavior and decreases in animal growth rate were observed; growth rate was the most susceptible endpoint in the sediment toxicity tests of both toxicants. Thus, we propose lowest observed effect concentrations of 0.3 mg kg−1 dry wt. and 0.2 mg kg−1 dry wt. for CuPT and (PS)2, respectively, and no observed effect concentrations of 0.1 mg kg−1 dry wt. for both CuPT and (PS)2. The difference in the toxicity values between CuPT and (PS)2 observed in the acute toxicity test was greater than the difference in these values in the sediment toxicity test, and we attribute this to (PS)2 being more hydrophilic than CuPT. In addition to the toxicity tests, we analyzed conjugation activity of several polychaete enzymes to the toxicants and marked activity of palmitoyl coenzyme-A:biocides acyltransferase and UDP-glucuronosyl transferase was observed.  相似文献

A dynamic compartment model was investigated to describe 14C accumulation in rice plants exposed to atmospheric 14C with temporally changing concentrations. In the model, rice plants were regarded to consist of three compartments: the ear and the mobile and immobile carbon pools of the shoot. Photosynthetically fixed carbon moves into the ear and the mobile carbon pool, and these two compartments release a part of this carbon into the atmosphere by respiration. Carbon accumulated in the mobile carbon pool is redistributed to the ear, while carbon transferred into the immobile carbon pool from the mobile one is accumulated there until harvest. The model was examined by cultivation experiments using the stable isotope, 13C, in which the ratios of carbon photosynthetically fixed at nine times during plant growth to the total carbon at the time of harvest were determined. The model estimates of the ratios were in relatively good agreement with the experimental observations, which implies that the newly developed compartment model is applicable to estimate properly the radiation dose to the neighboring population due to an accidental release of 14C from nuclear facilities.  相似文献

In order to increase knowledge of aerosol dry deposition for the regional assessment of acid deposition and transboundary air pollution in East Asia, an experimental study on PM2.5 sulfate deposition was implemented in the early summer of 2009. The experimental field was located in a deciduous forest at the foot of Mt. Asama, central Japan. Aerosol fluxes were obtained using the aerodynamic gradient method. Three aerosol samplers were placed on an experimental tower at 21, 24 and 27 m above the ground surface, and collected PM2.5 on filters for chemical analysis. Vertical concentration differences between 21 m and 27 m of PM2.5 sulfate were detected significantly when the concentration exceeded 1 μg m?3. Mean deposition velocity was estimated to be 0.9 ± 1.0 cm s?1 in the daytime and 0.3 ± 0.3 cm s?1 in the nighttime. In the case that a height-dependent correction in the roughness sub-layer was taken into account, the deposition velocities increased more, especially in daytime. Higher deposition velocities in the daytime were associated with larger friction velocities and unstable conditions. The deposition velocities observed in this study were in agreement with other experimental results found in the literature. On the other hand, they were higher than those calculated by theoretical models. Two empirical parameterizations (Wesely, M.L., Cook, D.R., Hart, R.L., 1985. The general trend of higher daytime and lower nighttime deposition velocities was similar among the observation and the two parameterizations. The large variability found in the measurement was not reproduced by the parameterizations, because it is attributable to random error from the differences between the samplers. The observations were in accordance with the parameterization of Ruijgrok et al. (1997) for a forest, although much larger than that of Wesely et al. (1985) for grasslands. Purpose

In the reservoir created in the reclaimed land in Isahaya Bay, Japan, Microcystis aeruginosa, which produces microcystins (MCs), bloomed every year, and the water with high levels of MCs in the reservoir has been often drained to Isahaya Bay to adjust the water level. The principal aims of this study are to clarify the water conditions suitable for blooming of M. aeruginosa in the reservoir, to follow the amount of distribution of MCs inside and outside the reservoir, and to discuss how blooming of M. aeruginosa is controlled in the reservoir and how MCs produced by Microcystis spread or accumulate in the aquatic environment.

Method

We monitored the water quality (temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus) in the reservoir with seasonal blooming of microalgae including phytoplankton and M. aeruginosa using the concentrations of chlorophyll ?? and MCs, respectively, and collected the surface sediment in the reservoir and the bay to determine the MC content using the ELISA method.

Result

M. aeruginosa bloomed in extremely low DIN conditions of the water in warm seasons (spring and late summer to autumn). The year-mean standing stock of MCs was approximately 34.5?kg in the water and 8.4?kg in the surface sediment in the reservoir. Approximately 64.5?kg of MCs was discharged with the effluent to the bay in a year.

Conclusion

Since a large amount of MCs always suspends in the water in the reservoir and it has been discharged to the bay, suspension-feeding animals are exposed most seriously to the high levels of MCs occurring in these areas. We need to pay attention to the danger of widespread dispersal of MCs and biological concentration of MCs by fish and clam inside and outside the reservoir.  相似文献

The simple ATDL urban dispersion model Is based on the formula Xo(g/m3) = CO(g/m2s)/U(m/s). The diurnal variation of the stability factor C, which can be thought of as the width of the urban area divided by the vertical dispersion of the pollution cloud, has not before been satisfactorily estimated. Using observed diurnal variations of CO concentrations and traffic frequencies reported by DeMarrais of the EPA for many stations in the states of Maryland, New Jersey, and Colorado, and using wind data from these states, hourly values of C - XoU/Q were calculated. The ratio of C to the daily average C is found to equal about 2.5 at 4 a.m., drops to about 0.5 by 8 a.m., and remains at 0.5 until about 6 p.m.., when it starts to climb slowly again. Application of this new stability factor to independent CO data from Los Angeles yields correlations between measured and predicted concentrations of about 0.7.  相似文献

The gene expression of environmental organisms is useful as a biomarker of environmental pollution. One of its advantages is high sensitivity. We identified the cDNA of a novel cadmium-responsive gene in the soil collembolan Folsomia candida. The deduced protein, designated “metallothionein-like motif containing protein” (MTC), was cysteine-rich and contained a metallothionein-like motif with similarity to metallothionein, but had a much longer sequence than metallothionein and contained repeated sequences of amino acids. Expression of MTC mRNA was sensitively induced by cadmium exposure at 0.3 mg/kg of dry food, a concentration at which toxic effects are not observed, but expression was not affected by γ-ray exposure (an inducer of oxidative stress). These findings suggest that MTC is involved in cadmium-binding processes rather than in oxidative-stress responses. In conclusion, we suggest that gene expression of MTC may be a candidate biomarker for detecting low levels of cadmium contamination in soil.  相似文献

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants were cultivated in an experimental field and separated at harvest into different components, including polished rice, rice bran, hull, straw, and root. The contents of iodine in these components and the soil were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and radiochemical neutron activation analysis, respectively. Iodine content varied by more than three orders of magnitude among the plant components. Mean concentration of iodine in the entire plants was 20 mg kg(-1) dry weight, and the concentration of iodine in the surface soil (0-20 cm depth) was 48 mg kg(-1). The highest concentration of iodine (53 mg kg(-1) dry weight) was measured in root and the lowest concentration (0.034 mg kg(-1) dry weight) in polished rice. While the edible component (polished rice) accounted for 32% of the total dry weight, it contained only 0.055% of iodine found in the entire rice plants. Atmospheric gaseous iodine (5.9 ng m(-3)) was estimated to contribute <0.2% of the total iodine content in the biomass of rice plants; therefore nearly all of the iodine in the rice plants was a result of the uptake of iodine from the soil. The content of iodine in the aboveground part of rice plants was 16 mg kg(-1) dry weight and the percentage of iodine transferred per cropping from the soil into the aboveground biomass corresponded to 0.27% (20 mg m(-2)) of the upper soil layer content.  相似文献
