The concentrations of six metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) were investigated and compared in three tissues (arms, digestive gland, and mantle) of three cephalopod species from the Tunisian waters: the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), the common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), and the European squid (Loligo vulgaris). Whatever the species or the sites, the digestive gland displayed the highest concentrations of Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, highlighting its major role in their bioaccumulation and detoxification. This is also true for Hg but only for the digestive gland of O. vulgaris. Muscle from the arms and the mantle contained thus relatively low trace metal concentrations except for Hg in L. vulgaris and S. officinalis. Geographic comparison of metal concentrations in Tunisian cephalopods from three locations indicates that higher concentrations of Ag, Pb, and Hg were observed in cephalopods from northern and eastern coasts, whereas the highest Cd levels were detected in the southeastern, reflecting different conditions of exposure. Comparing the trace element concentrations between species, Ag, Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn concentrations were the highest in the digestive gland of octopuses. This may be related to the differences in ecological features and swimming behavior among different cephalopod species. Few data are available on the movements and behavior of immature Atlantic loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from their seasonal neritic foraging grounds within the western north Atlantic. These waters provide developmental habitat
for loggerheads originating from several western Atlantic nesting stocks. We examined the long-term movements of 23 immature
loggerheads (16 wild-caught and seven headstart turtles) characterizing their seasonal distribution, habitat use, site fidelity,
and the oceanographic conditions encountered during their migrations. We identified two movement strategies: (1) a seasonal
shelf-constrained north–south migratory pattern; and (2) a year-round oceanic dispersal strategy where turtles travel in the
Gulf Stream to the North Atlantic and their northern dispersal is limited by the 10–15°C isotherm. When sea surface temperatures
dropped below 20°C, neritic turtles began a migration south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (USA) where they established
fidelity to the waters between North Carolina’s Outer Banks and the western edge of the Gulf Stream along outer continental
shelf. Two turtles traveled as far south as Florida. Several turtles returned to their seasonal foraging grounds during subsequent
summers. Northern movements were associated with both increased sea surface temperature (>21°C) and increased primary productivity.
Our results indicate strong seasonal and interannual philopatry to the waters of Virginia (summer foraging habitat) and North
Carolina (winter habitat). We suggest that the waters of Virginia and North Carolina provide important seasonal habitat and
serve as a seasonal migratory pathway for immature loggerhead sea turtles. North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras acts as a seasonal
“migratory bottleneck” for this species; special management consideration should be given to this region. Six turtles spent
time farther from the continental shelf. Three entered the Gulf Stream near Cape Hatteras, traveling in the current to the
northwest Atlantic. Two of these turtles remained within an oceanic habitat from 1 to 3 years and were associated with mesoscale
features and frontal systems. The ability of large benthic subadults to resume an oceanic lifestyle for extended periods indicates
plasticity in habitat use and migratory strategies. Therefore, traditional life history models for loggerhead sea turtles

A research study was performed to determine the fats, oil, and grease (FOG) removal efficiency of internal flow-based grease interceptors (FGI). A passive-flow and a mechanical-flow FGI unit were tested and their performance was compared to an external retention-based grease interceptor (RGI). Experiments involved multiple parameters including three oil/water emulsion strengths, two influent liquid temperatures, and two flow rates. Overall, the RGI achieved approximately 80% FOG removal and the FGIs removed less than 50% under the tested conditions. One exception occurred during the passive FGI testing during which removal reached approximately 80%. This increased efficiency was likely due to the relatively weak emulsion exhibiting significantly large FOG globules. The FOG removal efficiency decreased with increased temperature because of increased breakage of FOG globules at the elevated temperature. These results suggest that emulsion strength significantly affects FOG removal efficiency of FGIs and should be considered in future manufacturer testing protocol. 相似文献

This study characterized some of the physical and chemical features of large outside field grease abatement devices (GADs). 24-hour measurements of several food service establishments' (FSEs') influent GAD flowrates indicated highly intermittent conditions with hydraulic retention times (HRTs) that exceeded the common recommendation (30 minutes) by two to five times. Investigation into the chemical characteristics of GADs indicated highly variable influent and effluent fat, oil, and grease (FOG) concentrations. Low pH and dissolved oxygen values were measured throughout the GAD, indicating the likely occurrence of anaerobic microbial processes. Detailed spatial and temporal observations of the accumulation of FOG and food solids were also discussed. Though the FOG layer remained relatively constant for all GAD configurations investigated, results indicated that commonly-used GAD configurations with a straight submerged inlet tee or no-inlet tee configuration may result in the transport of food solids into the second compartment. The present research showed increased accumulation of food solids in the first compartment with a retro-fit flow distributive inlet. This retro-fit displays promise for potentially improving the separation characteristics of existing GADs. 相似文献

In the method termed “Other Test Method-10,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a method to quantify emissions from nonpoint sources by the use of vertical radial plume mapping (VRPM) technique. The surface area of the emitting source and the degree to which the different zones of the emitting source are contributing to the VRPM computed emissions are often unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate and present an approach to quantify the unknown emitting surface area that is contributing to VRPM measured emissions. Currently a preexisting model known as the “multiple linear regression model,” which is described in Thoma et al. (2009), is used for quantifying the unknown surface area. The method investigated and presented in this paper utilized tracer tests to collect data and develop a model much like that described in Thoma et al. (2009). However, unlike the study used for development of the multiple linear regression model, this study is considered a very limited study due to the low number of pollutant releases performed (seven total releases). It was found through this limited study that the location of an emitting source impacts VRPM computed emissions exponentially, rather than linearly (i.e., the impact that an emitting source has on VRPM measurements decreases exponentially with increasing distances between the emitting source and the VRPM plane). The data from the field tracer tests were used to suggest a multiple exponential regression model. The findings of this study, however, are based on a very small number of tracer tests. More tracer tests performed during all types of climatic conditions, terrain conditions, and different emissions geometries are still needed to better understand the variation of capture efficiency with emitting source location. This study provides a step toward such an objective.
Implications The findings of this study will aid in the advancement of the VRPM technique. In particular, the contribution of this study is to propose a slight improvement in how the area contributing to flux is determined during VRPM campaigns. This will reduce some of the technique's inherent uncertainties when it is employed to estimate emissions from an area source under nonideal conditions. 相似文献

Recent traffic safety research has advocated the use of the Full Bayes (FB) approach to conduct controlled before-after safety evaluations. The FB approach was shown to offer both methodological and data advantages. However, there is still a lack of complete understanding of the role that the model parameters play in the formulation of treatment effectiveness. This paper offers a novel approach to compute components related to direct and indirect treatment effects under a linear intervention model for the Safety Performance Function (SPF). The isolation of a component corresponding to the direct treatment effects enables the analyst to assess the effectiveness of the countermeasures apart from local (site-related) environmental factors. Two case studies are used to demonstrate the approach. The first case study is based on the results published from a previous safety evaluation in Iowa and the second uses a new data set from British Columbia based on the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia Road Improvement Program. The various direct and indirect components have yielded valuable insight into the effects of the model parameters on treatment impacts. Moreover, the calculation of the treatment effectiveness indices have been simplified by providing straightforward equations in terms of model parameters for the computation of their components without resorting to additional algorithms. More importantly, the results can have a significant impact on the economic evaluation of safety programs and countermeasures by allowing the calculation of collision modification factors (CMFs) that vary with time. 相似文献

Lithium is found in trace amounts in all soils. It is also found in plants and in nearly all the organs of the human body.
Low Li intake can cause behavioral defects. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the concentration and distribution
of water-soluble Li in soils of the Jordan Valley and its concentration in citrus trees and some important food crops in view
of the significant implications of Li for human health. The concentration of soluble Li was measured in 180 soil samples collected
at two depths (0–20 and 20–40 cm) whereas its content was determined in fully expanded leaves collected from citrus and different
vegetable crops. Concentrations of soluble Li in soils vary from 0.95 to 1.04 mg l−1 in topsoil and from 1.06 to 2.68 mg l−1 in subsoil, while Li concentration in leaves ranged from 2 to 27 mg kg−1 DM. Lithium concentrations in leaves of crops of the same family or different families vary with location in the valley;
i.e., they decreased from north to south. It is concluded that soluble Li in soils and the plant family did not solely affect
Li transfer in the food chain. In addition, soil EC, Ca, Mg, and Cl, which increased from north to south, might adversely
affect plant Li uptake. The current study also showed that consuming 250–300 g FW of spinach day−1 per person is recommended to provide consumers with their daily Li requirement necessary for significant health and societal
