Across the Americas, biofuels production systems are diverse due to geographic conditions, historical patterns of land tenure, different land use patterns, government policy frameworks, and relations between the national state and civil society, all of which shape the role that biofuels play in individual nations. Although many national governments throughout the Americas continue to incentivize growth of the biofuels industry, one key challenge for biofuels sustainability has been concern about its social impacts. In this article, we discuss some of the key social issues and tensions related to the recent expansion of biofuels production in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. We argue that a process of “simplification” of ecological and cultural diversity has aided the expansion of the biofuels frontier in these countries, but is also undermining their viability. We consider the ability of governments and non-state actors in multi-stakeholder initiatives (MSI) to address social and environmental concerns that affect rural livelihoods as a result of biofuels expansion. We analyze the tensions between global sustainability standards, national level policies for biofuels development, and local level impacts and visions of sustainability. We find that both government and MSI efforts to address sustainability concerns have limited impact, and recommend greater incorporation of local needs and expertise to improve governance.  相似文献

Mechanism of nitrogen dioxide interaction with polymers containing amide and imide groups in the main or side chains of macromolecules (polycaproamide, polyvinylpyrrolidone, poly-m-phenylene isophthalamide and polypyromellitimide) is considered. The initiators of conversions of polymers of the given classes are not monoradicals of nitrogen dioxide rather than its equilibrium dimers in the form of nitrosyl nitrate. In primary oxidizing reaction of an electron transfer from donor groups of macromolecules to nitrosyl nitrate, radical cations, nitric oxide and nitrate anion are formed, which in the subsequent reactions give products of nitration and nitrosation. These products are precursors of stable acylalkylaminoxyl, acylarylaminoxyl, iminoxyl macroradicals. The specific interactions of nitrogen dioxide dimers with functional groups of macromolecules determine features of the mechanism of ion-radical conversions of the polymers and the composition of radical and molecular products. The direct detection of radical cations has been realized by ESR method for confirmation of the ion-radical initiation concept using model reaction of nitrogen dioxide with triphenylamine.  相似文献

Due to the rise of functional foods,the distinction between foods and medicines hasbecome increasingly blurred. A new EUregulation covering health claims and otherclaims on food and drink products is on thedocks. A basic motive of legal regulation oflabeling and advertising is to inform andprotect the consumer. Promotion of informedchoice and consumer protection may, however, beconflicting objectives. A further problemsprings from the fact that choice, likeconsent, is a propositional attitude andtherefore opaque. Thus it is extremelydifficult for regulators to fasten onparticular formulations of claims. ABSTRACT: Variable Source Areas (VSAs) are zones with water saturated soils in forested wetlands fringing streams and creeks. Runoff from these areas is generated by saturation excess after a shallow water table rises and inundates the ground surface. In humid regions, like Florida and the Southeast, VSAs are believed to produce most of the runoff in shallow water table environments. Modeling the spatial extent and temporal fluctuation of a VSA is difficult because the formation of a VSA depends on a number of hydrological and morphological factors like rainfall intensity, soil texture, water table depth, and topographic attributes of the terrain. In this paper, we couple a digital elevation model with a two‐dimensional variable saturation model to illustrate the formation of a VSA at the hillside scale. The topography derived from the digital elevation model forms the upper domain geometry for the two‐dimensional finite element simulations of variable saturated flow. The objectives are: (1) to model the spatial and dynamic fluctuation of a VSA, and (2) to understand the roles of rainfall variability and terrain attributes on the formation of a VSA. Results show that hillsides with shallow water table depths, low saturated hydraulic conductivity, mild slopes, and concave slope curvature were more susceptible to runoff from a variable source. Runoff from a variable source showed little sensitivity to rainfall intensity. In general, landscapes with steep slopes generated a small VSA and a seepage face that vanished rapidly with time. In contrast, flat terrains are more amenable to VSA and retain ground surface inundation for longer periods of time.  相似文献

Females across many taxa commonly use multiple or complex traits to choose mates. However, the functional significance of multiple or complex signals remains controversial and largely unknown. Different elements of multiple or complex signals may convey independent pieces of information about different aspects of a prospective mate (the “multiple messages” hypothesis). Alternatively, multiple or complex signals could provide redundant information about the same aspect of a prospective mate (the “redundant” or “back-up” signal hypothesis). We investigated these alternatives using spadefoot toads, Scaphiopus couchii. Spadefoot toads primarily use calls to attract their mates, but males also exhibit sexually dimorphic coloration. We investigated whether male coloration is indicative of male size, condition, or infection status by a socially transmitted monogenean flatworm. We found that male coloration and dorsal patterning predicts male size and condition but not infection status. Moreover, when we presented females with a choice between a bright male model and a dark male model, we found that females preferred the bright model. Because aspects of males’ calls are also associated with male size and condition, we conclude that coloration is a potentially redundant indicator of male phenotype. We suggest that coloration could enhance mate choice in conjunction with male calling behavior by providing females with a long distance cue that could enable them to identify prospective mates in a noisy chorus environment where the discrimination of individual calls is often difficult. Generally, such redundant signals may facilitate mate choice by enhancing the quality and accuracy of information females receive regarding prospective mates.  相似文献

The paper presents data on radiation effects in populations of wild vertebrate animals inhabiting contaminated terrestrial ecosystems. The data were extracted from the database "Radiation effects on biota", compiled within the framework of the EC Project EPIC (2000-2003). The data collection, based on publications in Russian, demonstrates radiation effects in the areas characterized with high levels of radionuclides (Kyshtym radioactive trace; "spots" of enhanced natural radioactivity in the Komi region of Russia; territories contaminated from the Chernobyl fallout). The data covers a wide range of exposures from acute accidental irradiation to lifetime exposures at relatively low dose rates. Radiation effects include mortality, changes in reproduction, decrease of health, ecological effects, cytogenetic effects, adaptation to radiation, and others. Peculiarities of radiation effects caused by different radionuclides are described, also the severity of effects as they appear in different organisms (e.g. mice, frogs, birds, etc.).  相似文献

Recent theoretical research indicates that dynamics of shallow flows can be strongly affected by waves developing on the free surface. In this study a shallow wake with an oblique pressure wave behind a model of a tree-centered emergent bar is investigated in a gravel-bed river. A bar was constructed in a shallow river reach with nearly uniform flow. The structure of flow was assessed with an array of velocimeters. Flow visualization with a solute of fluorescent dye complemented the measurements and provided qualitative information on the wake behavior. This study indicates that quantitative criteria for shallow wakes classification developed in laboratory setups are not straightforward in explaining the field results. According to the wake stability criteria, the expected dynamics for examined wake flow is a vortex street (VS) type. Contrary to this expectation, measurements and visualizations in this study show that mean momentum differential and turbulent vortices in the wake decrease stronger than expected in VS type and therefore the wake should be classified as unsteady bubble type with a weak downstream instability. Analysis of velocity differential dynamics in the examined shallow wake suggests that the bed friction alone is insufficient to explain the inconsistency of VS criterion whereas accounting for advective fluxes driven by inhomogeneous pressure field leads to a correct prediction of the wake behavior.  相似文献

This paper presents results of a model test carried out within the framework of the COMETES project (EU). The aim of the work was to change the structure of the MOIRA lake model for radiocesium so that it can be applied more generally for, in principle, all types of radionuclides and heavy metals. This general lake model is used within the MOIRA decision support system (DSS; MOIRA and COMETES are acronyms for EU-projects). The model is based on a set of differential equations and a specific modelling structure. It incorporates all important fluxes to, from and within lakes in a general manner. Yet the model is driven by a minimum of variables accessible from standard maps and monitoring programs. The model can be separated into two parts, a general part with equations applicable for all types of water pollutants and a substance-specific part. This model has previously been validated for 137Cs from many lakes covering a wide domain and yielded excellent predictive power. The alterations discussed in this work are meant to be general and radiostrontium is used as a typical element. Radiostrontium is known to be more mobile than radiocesium and all abiotic parts of the model handling fixation and mobility have been altered. The new model for 90Sr has been critically tested using data from four lakes heavily contaminated with 90Sr from the Kyshtym accident in the Southern Urals, Russia, using empirical data from a period from 1958 to 1995 for 90Sr in fish (here goldfish), water and sediments.  相似文献
