Biological interest in trace element speciation has tended to be polarised in very different ways according to the concerns of the investigators. Much of the ecological interest has centred on the effects of metal ions in the external environment with the "free metal ion model" dominating discussions of potential toxicity. By way of contrast biochemists have been much more concerned with the stereochemical and kinetic aspects of specificity in metal protein interactions in the cytoplasm. Separating these two sets of interests are the membrane biophysicists whose studies have concentrated on the channel concept. All three groups have tended to ignore speciation onto the solid phase. In the overall biological context, trace element speciation in the cell is more concerned with kinetics and the evolution of specificity of interaction between diverse ligands than with the conditions for equilibrium.  相似文献

Spirocyst tubules in five shallow-water antipatharian species Antipathes pennacea, Antipathes sp. cf. salix, A. fiordensis, A. galapagensis, and Cirrhipathes luetkeni contain an electron-opaque, helically arranged structure, composed of four distinct and separate bundles of microfibril-like material. Each bundle appears to be solid, rather than hollow, and is enveloped by a sheath of lesser electron-opacity that is continuous with the pleats. Tubules from a more distantly related, deep-water antipatharian, are similarly configured but are composed of only three distinct bundles, separated from one another by electron-opaque sheath material. The bundles are electron-lucent; their substructure was not preserved because this specimen was prepared for microscopy after preservation in alcohol for 27 yr, apparently without initial fixation. Most other details of the spirocyst tubule and capsule can be determined from this museum specimen. The arrangement within the tubule of multiple bundles, clearly defined by sheaths, is structurally distinct from other zoantharian spirocysts, and appears to be unique to the Antipatharia. The tubule structure of the anemone Aiptasia sp., examined for comparison, is consistent with that of spirocysts from other actiniarians and zoantharians generally, including the appearance of electron-opaque rodlets within the tubule lumen. No substructural information was obtained from Aiptasia sp. rodlets. It is unclear whether the microfibrillar bundles of antipatharian spirocysts differ from those of other zoantharians by being more amenable to resolution, or if their tubule substructure is fundamentally distinct from those of more typical zoantharians. In terms of overall structure, Aiptasia sp. spirocyst tubules contain a single bundle of rodlets without a clearly defined sheath, in contrast to antipatharians which have three or four bundles, each clearly defined. These structural differences may be useful in determining relationships both within the Antipatharia, and between antipatharians and allied orders.  相似文献

We advance a framework for testing mediational relationships that traverse levels of analysis. We differentiate mediation that functions within levels, as well as different forms of meso‐mediation that operate downward across levels of analysis. We discuss the preconditions and evidential basis for these meso‐mediational type relationships. We then provide an empirical example that illustrates the different types of mediation and conclude with recommendations and extensions for studying more complex meso‐mediational organizational phenomena. ABSTRACT: A hydroelectric lake on the Oconee River in central Georgia was sampled on a quarterly basis for four years to determine the impact of three insecticides on the pesticide loading of fish. The insecticides carbofuran (2,3,-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methyl-carbamate), fenvalerate [cyano(3-phenoxyphenyl)methyl 4-chloro alpha (1-methylethyl)benzeneacetate], and azinphosmethyl [0,0-Dimethyl S-(4-oxo-1,2,3-benzotriazin-3-(4H)-ylmethyl phosphorodithioate] were used to control cone and seed insects on a pine seed orchard that is adjacent to Lake Oconee. Fish populations in areas of the lake that receive runoff from treated and untreated portions of the seed orchard were sampled using gill nets. Water and fish samples were collected monthly in 1981–1983 and quarterly in 1984. Species collected included carp (Cyprinus carpio), sucker (Catostomus spp., Erimyzon spp., Moxostoma spp., Minytrema spp.), bass (Micropterus spp.), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), spotted gar (Lepisosteus spp.), and bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus). Few carbofuran residues (< 7 percent of fish samples contained detectable residues) and no azinphosmethyl or fenvalerate residues were detected despite measured inputs into the lake after insecticide application. Persistent agricultural insecticides including dieldrin, lindane, DDT, and toxaphene were detected in 32, 36, 58, and 83 percent of sampled fish, respectively. Screening for 20 other insecticides resulted in no detection of residues at a detection limit of 30–100 μg kg-1.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: As part of the Gulf Coast Regional Aquifer System Analysis (GC RASA) study, data from 184 geophysical well logs were used to define the geohydrologic framework of the Mississippi embayment aquifer system in Mississippi for flow model simulation. Five major aquifers of Eocene and Paleocene age were defined within this aquifer system in Mississippi. A computer data storage system was established to assimilate the information obtained from the geophysical logs. Computer programs were developed to manipulate the data to construct geologic sections and structure maps. Data from the storage system will be input to a five-layer, three-dimensional, finite-difference digital computer model that is used to simulate the flow dynamics in the five major aquifers of the Mississippi embayment aquifer system.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The U.S. Geological Survey has performed hundreds of time-of-travel and tracer dispersion studies in streams and estuaries nationwide. This paper presents an approach to unitizing this type of data to make it more universally usable in predicting the behavior of soluble contaminants entering waterways. Practical application of the superposition principle and of the scalene triangle as an approximation of the response curve from a slug injection of a solute are demonstrated to be a means of simulating the downstream effects of any form of soluble contaminant release.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The relationship between chlorophyll u, total phosphorus, secchi disk depth, and trophic state were examined using data on U.S. lakes collected by U.S. EPA's National Eutrophication Survey. By comparing predicted secchi disk depths with observed summer secchi disk depths in 757 lakes, it was determined that in many lakes non-chlorophyll related light attenuation is important in controlling the amount of chlorophyll u produced per unit of total phosphorus. Ranking of 44 lakes by 18 different trophic state measurements and single and multivariable indices were compared with rankings provided by mean summer ambient total phosphorus and chlorophyll u. The trophic state measurements and indices were much more successful in ranking the lakes against total phosphorus than chlorophyll u, indicating that there are differences in the relative trophic rankings of many of the lakes depending upon whether primary nutrients or biological manifestations are used as the ranking mechanism. If the manifestations of nutrients rather than their absolute levels are the primary criteria for beneficial use of lakes, the use of many of the commonly employed trophic state measurements, which assume or imply that there is a constant relationship between total phosphorus or secchi disk and chlorophyll, can lead to erroneous conclusions and unnecessary costly management controls. Secchi disk measurements may be more useful as a predictor of ambient lake total phosphorus concentrations than of chlorophyll.  相似文献

The Posidonienschiefer Formation (Toarcian) of Holzmaden, Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany has yielded several excellently preserved plesiosaurian specimens and received considerable research attention. The plesiosaurians found within these deposits are always significantly outnumbered by ichthyosaurs, and close examination of these rare specimens is crucial to a better understanding of the diversity and palaeoecology of Plesiosauria in this very peculiar ecosystem. The plesiosaurian specimen SMNS 51945 found in this area is a juvenile individual consisting of a partial, crushed skull and an exquisitely preserved post-cranial skeleton. Its anatomical characters seem to differ from the long-necked plesiosauroids Microcleidus brachypterygius and Seeleyosaurus guilelmiimperatoris that are the most abundant taxa within the plesiosaurian assemblage. The post-cranial skeleton preserves very likely soft tissues composed of buff-coloured and dark-coloured structures around the vertebral column and hindlimb of the animal. A network of buff-coloured fibres located posterior to the hindlimb most likely represents phosphatised collagen fibres as already found in some ichthyosaur specimens, confirming that wing area in plesiosaurians was much larger than that suggested by skeletal remains alone. The specimen also contains gastroliths (sand-sized grains mainly composed of quartz) in the stomach cavity suggesting the animal spent at least some of its time in shallow coastal waters, tens or hundreds of kilometres from the final place of burial.  相似文献

Disinfection by-products(DBPs) are a complex mixture of compounds unintentionally formed as a result of disinfection processes used to treat drinking water. Effects of long-term exposure to DBPs are mostly unknown and were the subject of recent epidemiological studies. However,most bioanalytical methods focus on a select few DBPs. In this study, a new comprehensive bioanalytical method has been developed that can quantify mixtures of organic halogenated compounds, including DBPs, in human urine as total organic chlorine(TOCl), total organic bromine(TOBr), and total organic iodine(TOI). The optimized method consists of urine dilution, adsorption to activated carbon, pyrolysis of activated carbon, absorption of gases in an aqueous solution, and halide analysis with ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Spike recoveries for TOCl, TOBr, and TOI measurements ranged between 78% and 99%. Average TOCl, TOBr, and TOI concentrations in five urine samples from volunteers who consumed tap water were 1850, 82, and 21.0 μg/L as X~-, respectively.Volunteers who consumed spring water(control) had TOCl, TOBr, and TOI average concentrations in urine of 1090, 88, and 10.3 μg/L as X~-, respectively. TOCl and TOI in the urine samples from tap water consumers were higher than the control. However, TOBr was slightly lower in tap water urine samples compared to mineral water urine samples, indicating other sources of environmental exposure other than drinking water. A larger sample population that consumes tap water from different cities and mineral water is needed to determine TOCl, TOBr, and TOI exposure from drinking water.  相似文献
