This article gives an overview of the studies on the environment surrounding the Abisko Scientific Research Station in Swedish Lapland. The long-term monitoring of the Station on processes related to the climate, and to the physical, biotic, and chemical environmental conditions is particularly addressed. Some variables are recorded since more than 100 years. The obtained data in combination with results from short-term studies and manipulation experiments are important to understand past and future conditions of the ecosystems. This has practical applications for the planning of tourism, transports, reindeer herding, and for societal purposes.  相似文献

Coconut trees growing on atolls of the Bikini Islands are on the margin of K deficiency because the concentration of exchangeable K in coral soil is very low, ranging from only 20 to 80 mg kg−1. When provided with additional K, coconut trees absorb large quantities of K and this uptake of K significantly alters the patterns of distribution of 137Cs within the plant. Following a single K fertilization event, mean total K in trunks of K-treated trees is 5.6 times greater than in trunks of control trees. In contrast, 137Cs concentration in trunks of K-treated and control trees is statistically the same while 137Cs is significantly lower in edible fruits of K-treated trees. Within one year after fertilization (one rainy season), K concentration in soil is back to naturally low concentrations. However, the tissue concentrations of K in treated trees stays very high internally in the trees for years while 137Cs concentration in treated trees remains very low in all tree compartments except for the trunk. Potassium fertilization did not change soil Cs availability.  相似文献

People have been bringing plants into residential and other indoor settings for centuries, but little is known about their psychological effects. In the present article, we critically review the experimental literature on the psychological benefits of indoor plants. We focus on benefits gained through passive interactions with indoor plants rather than on the effects of guided interactions with plants in horticultural therapy or the indirect effect of indoor plants as air purifiers or humidifiers. The reviewed experiments addressed a variety of outcomes, including emotional states, pain perception, creativity, task-performance, and indices of autonomic arousal. Some findings recur, such as enhanced pain management with plants present, but in general the results appear to be quite mixed. Sources of this heterogeneity include diversity in experimental manipulations, settings, samples, exposure durations, and measures. After addressing some overarching theoretical issues, we close with recommendations for further research with regard to experimental design, measurement, analysis, and reporting.  相似文献

Employment after retirement, known as bridge employment, is expected to occur more frequently because the baby boom generation will increase the number of retirees. Little is known about which employees will obtain which type of bridge employment when they retire, even though it has important implications. The present study examined work‐related attitudes, job characteristics, and work‐related accomplishments of 171 retirees in order to predict whether they would fully retire or take one of two types of bridge jobs after retirement: Career‐consistent bridge jobs or bridge jobs in fields different from their original career. Continuity theory of retirement helped predict post‐retirement employment type. Retirees who had skills specifically related to their career job were more likely to work in a career‐related bridge job than either to fully retire or to take a bridge job that was not related to their careers; retirees who formerly held career jobs with intrinsically motivating job characteristics were more likely to take a career‐related bridge job than to retire fully, and retirees who had experienced work strain in their career job were more likely to take a bridge job not related to their former career than to take a career bridge job. The Microbial Assay for Risk Assessment (MARA) is an innovative system based on an array of 11 different microbial species freeze-dried in a 96-well micro-titre plate format. Developed for testing the toxicity of chemicals, mixtures and environmental samples, the assay employs species of a taxonomically diverse range. In addition to ten prokaryotic species, a eukaryote (yeast) is included in the range. The MARA's innate scope of a multi-dimensional test allows determination of toxicity based on a unique assay fingerprint or index, numerically expressed as the mean Microbial Toxic Concentration (MTC). The most significant potential of the test is in the additional inference that can be conveyed to the toxicity evaluation because of the presence of each of the constituent species. In view of the fact that conventional aquatic bioassays, like fish or cladoceran tests, are expensive and impractical, the MARA could provide a cost-effective solution for routine ecotoxicological testing. The performance of the MARA was evaluated to ascertain its capability and potential scope. Sensitivity to toxicants and different environmental samples was assessed. Evaluation included comparison with other tests: namely Microtox, invertebrate (Daphnia magna and Thamnocephalus platyurus) microbiotests, and respiration-inhibition and nitrification-inhibition tests. The most sensitive invertebrate test was found to be the T. platyurus microbiotest for three of the four metals tested. The LC(50) values for this test for Cd(ii), Cr(vi) and As(iii) were 0.2, 0.018 and 0.3 mg l(-1), respectively; and the corresponding most sensitive MARA species MTC values were 4.4, 2.8 and 17 mg l(-1), respectively.  相似文献

As the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the US Clean Water Act (USCWA) for the maintenance of microbiological water quality in 'protected areas' highlight, there is a growing recognition that integrated management of point and diffuse sources of microbial pollution is essential. New information on catchment microbial dynamics and, in particular, the sources of faecal indicator bacteria found in bathing and shellfish harvesting waters is a pre-requisite for the design of any 'programme of measures' at the drainage basin scale to secure and maintain compliance with existing and new health-based microbiological standards. This paper reports on a catchment-scale microbial source tracking (MST) study in the Leven Estuary drainage basin, northwest England, an area for which quantitative faecal indicator source apportionment empirical data and land use information were also collected. Since previous MST studies have been based on laboratory trials using 'manufactured' samples or analyses of spot environmental samples without the contextual microbial flux data (under high and low flow conditions) and source information, such background data are needed to evaluate the utility of MST in USCWA total maximum daily load (TMDL) assessments or WFD 'Programmes of Measures'. Thus, the operational utility of MST remains in some doubt. The results of this investigation, using genotyping of Bacteroidetes using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and male-specific ribonucleic acid coliphage (F + RNA coliphage) using hybridisation, suggest some discrimination is possible between livestock- and human-derived faecal indicator concentrations but, in inter-grade areas, the degree to which the tracer picture reflected the land use pattern and probable faecal indicator loading were less distinct. Interestingly, the MST data was more reliable on high flow samples when much of the faecal indicator flux from catchment systems occurs. Whilst a useful supplementary tool, the MST information did not provide quantitative source apportionment for the study catchment. Thus, it could not replace detailed empirical measurement of microbial flux at key catchment outlets to underpin faecal indicator source apportionment. Therefore, the MST techniques reported herein currently may not meet the standards required to be a useful forensic tool, although continued development of the methods and further catchment scale studies could increase confidence in such methods for future application.  相似文献

This article presents the results of an Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) demonstration conducted at Horsham Air Guard Station and the former Willow Grove Naval Reserve Station in Horsham, Pennsylvania. The technology demonstrated, identified as the AquaPRS™ system, employs a carbon-based micro-adsorbent suspension to adsorb polyfluoroalkylated substance (PFAS), which is subsequently filtered using a ceramic membrane filter. A prototypical AquaPRS system was specifically designed and implemented to treat per- and PFAS-contaminated water resources at a fidelity level that could be replicated at other US Department of Defense sites. The objective of the project was to demonstrate and validate the application of the adsorption and separation treatment approach to reduce the total life-cycle cost of treating PFAS-impacted groundwater. The results of the demonstration showed that the AquaPRS technology provides an alternative to granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange (IX) systems based on treatment efficacy and cost performance using lifecycle cost analyses. Pretreatment included cloth media filtration with a nominal 5 µm particulate rejection rating to remove sediment from the surface water treated during the Horsham evaluation. Prefiltration was not necessary for treating the Willow Grove groundwater due to the lower raw turbidities. The micro-adsorbent was added to the system to maintain a suspension between 1 and 50 g/L in the sorbent chamber at reaction times from 5 to 20 min. Treated effluent was separated from the sorbent slurry matrix using the ceramic membrane filter, with the slurry returned to the sorption reactor. The first study conducted at Horsham Air Guard Station demonstrated and validated the AquaPRS treatment approach using a mobile pilot system, while the second study (conducted at the former Naval Reserve Air Station at Willow Grove) provided further optimization of cost, performance, and scalability. At Horsham, 13 tests were conducted over 9 months using a dual-train pilot with each test evaluating two separate conditions. The first 10 tests were conducted with treatment systems in parallel and the remaining three were conducted in series. At Willow Grove, five tests were conducted over a 6-month period for a total of 10 individual test conditions. Three tests were performed in parallel with two operated in series. Tests conducted at Horsham evaluated the performance of the AquaPRS system at different hydraulic detention times (5–120 min), sorbent mass (10–430 g), sorbent densities (0.5–40 g/L), and flowrates (0.1–1 L/min). At Willow Grove, the range of these parameters was further narrowed with hydraulic detention times from 10 to 20 min, sorbent mass from 100 to 200 g, sorbent density from 10 to 25 g/L, and flowrate from 0.67 to 1 L/min. AquaPRS was validated by quantifying the specific adsorption rate (SAR) of various PFASs on the micro-adsorbent and comparing it to values derived for GAC and IX from the same water matrix. The costs of the three treatment systems were compared to estimate a payback period for the AquaPRS system compared to GAC and IX. At 10% breakthrough, the SAR of AquaPRS for the combined concentration of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3) PFASs was nearly 300 times higher compared to those treated with GAC. At 40 ng/L breakthrough for combined UCMR3 compounds, a single-stage AquaPRS system at Horsham achieved 146 µg PFAS/g sorbent SAR, while a dual-stage system at Willow Grove achieved 2128 µg PFAS/g sorbent. The AquaPRS system showed a breakeven period of 8 months compared to a similarly designed GAC system in the Horsham evaluation using the observed adsorption rates. In the Willow Grove test case, a 24–36-month breakeven period was determined for the AquaPRS technology when compared to the highest sorption rates observed among five previously tested IX resins. The AquaPRS benefits in comparison to GAC/IX include effective performance in the presence of co-contaminants, adaptability to changing conditions, limited downtime for sorbent replacement, resistance to biofouling, small footprint, and reduced disposal requirements. The lower waste production rates are due to the AquaPRS' ability to dewater the spent sorbent resulting in a waste generation of just 0.002% of the total volume of water treated. Based on the treatment efficacy and cost performance, the AquaPRS system is positioned as an alternative to GAC and IX systems.  相似文献
