A large proportion of ladybird beetle (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) eggs are apparently infertile—they do not develop an embryo and are consumed by larvae hatching within the egg batch. The predicted benefits of egg consumption for larvae are empirically well supported. An important question, however, remains: are these eggs a maternal strategy to feed offspring (i.e., trophic eggs) or did egg eating evolve to exploit unavoidably infertile eggs? We investigated the adaptive value of infertile eggs in laboratory experiments with multicoloured Asian ladybirds (Harmonia axyridis). Female H. axyridis were assigned to low and high resource environments for brief intervals; we predicted that tactics to facilitate egg cannibalism, such as infertile egg production and hatching asynchrony, would be adopted in low food environments in which starvation risk for offspring is greater. We conducted two experiments in this manner that provided females with information about resource levels through prey feeding or scent. We also observed female oviposition patterns and tested for infertile egg distributions that departed from random. Females produced 56% more infertile eggs in the low vs. the high food treatment; however, hatching synchrony did not change. We consider a potential confound between information and nutrition state unlikely because ladybirds are well able to tolerate low food for 24 h, the duration of trials, and because females were in good condition when trials began. Results suggest that ladybirds use information from prey encounter to manipulate the proportion of trophic eggs in a manner consistent with the adaptive hypothesis, the first evidence of trophic egg plasticity in a non-eusocial insect. 相似文献

Summary Experiments were conducted in aquaria to test the hypothesis that females of the snow crab,Chionoecetes opilio, release a sex pheromone to attract mates. Males exhibited significantly increased activity to water from a source aquarium containing recently-moulted pubescent females, egg-stripped multiparous females and recently-moulted immature females than to water from an aquarium containing berried multiparous females, eggs alone, adolescent males or an empty aquarium. Males without their cephalic chemoreceptors maintained low activity levels in the presence of recently-moulted pubescent females, whereas maxilla-ablated males reacted as strongly as intact males. These findings are discussed within the context of the ecdysteroid-sex pheromone hypothesis, proposed by Kittredgeet al. (1971) and Kittredge & Takahashi (1972), but subsequently rejected. We propose that ecdysteroids from both pubescent and multiparous females may elicit male search-and-clasp behaviour inC. opilio and that the reproductive biology of species used to refute the hypothesis was inappropriate to test the role of ecdysteroids as a cue in the mating process. 相似文献

Inhibition of zooplankton grazing by toxicants present at sublethal concentrations in freshwater ecosystems can lead to uncontrolled algal growth and consequently exacerbate eutrophication problems. Short-term measurements of cladoceran grazing inhibition have been reported for some toxicants, but these studies do not mimic the actual interactions between microalgae, daphnids and toxicants, since algal growth is not allowed. On the opposite, algal blooms in complex microcosm or mesocosm assays have been interpreted as consequences on zooplankton, but effects on grazing, survival, growth or reproduction could not be easily discriminated. In this study, a simple assay with daphnids and microalgae is proposed to measure effects on grazing in dynamic conditions (algal growth over 6 days), and applied to copper and lindane. In the same time, direct effects on algal growth can be shown and taken into account. Results are compared with daphnid response measured with different endpoints (immobilization test and static grazing assay). For both toxicants, effects at sublethal concentrations were demonstrated. Copper impaired daphnid grazing at 10 microg/l (60% inhibition) in the 48 h-static test and 15 microg/l (40% inhibition) in the 6 day-dynamic test, whereas 48 h-EC50 for daphnid mobility was 47 microg/l. In two cases of prenatally detected cystic hygroma with oligohydraminos, successful cytogenetic diagnosis of Turner syndrome was achieved using cells obtained from direct aspiration of the cystic hygroma. Exceptionally high levels of alpha-fetoprotein were found in the cystic hygroma fluid, as might be expected. However, the maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were within normal limits. Elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels in ‘amniotic fluid’ noted previously in the literature may have resulted because of inadvertent tapping of the cystic hygroma. It is clear from our cases that maternal serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein will not necessarily be elevated and will not serve as a screening mechanism for cystic hygromas. 相似文献

Wastewater sludges are used in agriculture as soil amendment and fertilizer, with regard to their organic matter and nutrient content. However, availability of nitrogen and phosphorus from sludge-amended soils and their transfer in runoff may lead to eutrophication of downstream surface water. The aim of this study is to establish and compare the effect of two different sludges on these transfers: an anaerobically digested and thermically stabilised sludge (Seine-Aval treatment plant, sludge no. 1), and a limed sludge (Saint-Quentin treatment plant, sludge no. 2). Experiments were performed on 12 sloping micro-plots (1 m × 1 m) submitted to sludge spreading and controlled rainfall simulation. Runoff water was sampled and analysed for concentrations in nitrogen species and phosphorus. Results show that spreading of sludge no. 1 increased both ammonium nitrogen (mean of 1.1 mg L–1 N-NH4 vs. 0.2 mg L–1 N-NH4 for control micro-plots) and particulate phosphorus concentrations (mean of 2 mg L–1 P vs. 1.1 mg L–1 P for control micro-plots) in runoff water. On the other hand, sludge no. 2 did not induce any significant effect on nutrient concentrations in runoff. These results are related to chemical composition and physical treatment of sludges. This study underlines the existence of a short-term risk of nutrient mobilisation by runoff after sludge spreading on soil, and the need to check precisely the impact of this practice on water quality. 相似文献
