ABSTRACT

The study explores how glocalization of COVID-19 responses affects the management of the pandemic in Africa. Using data from 20 selected African countries, the study found that the reliance on local medicines alongside other salient global initiatives for containment of COVID-19 is effective in managing the pandemic in Africa. It concluded that despite the high vulnerabilities of African countries to COVID-19, the glocal approach has yielded positive outcomes by increasing the number of patients that recover from COVID-19 and scaling down the fatalities compared with the other regions.  相似文献

Contamination of soil and groundwater by trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a widespread problem confronting military bases and ammunition manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. Phytoremediation provides a promising treatment of TNT-contaminated groundwater and wastewater because many plants contain the necessary enzymes to degrade explosives such as TNT. Two phytoremediation methods are proposed in this article: controlled reactors and constructed wetlands. Controlled reactors provide greater control of operating parameters, a reduced possibility of contaminant migration, control of animals feeding on the plants, and minimization of competition from other plant species. Constructed wetlands have relatively low capital costs, and the wetland becomes a desirable ecological resource. Because cost, as opposed to reactor size, appears to be the most significant factor for military base cleanup, this project focused on the constructed wetland approach. To estimate the disappearance of TNT and its breakdown products from a constructed wetland, a first-order, nonreversible reaction, plug-flow, finite-difference model was developed. Batch scale experiments were conducted to define disappearance kinetics for individual chemical species. The results of the model suggest that reasonably sized wetlands may be used to treat a wastestream with an influent TNT concentration of 2.25 ppm at flow rates ranging from 10 to 5,000 gpm. Economic comparisons to other published costs for competing technologies are promising.  相似文献

There are two unique methodological features described in this article. Contemporary urban planning is characterised by the following: (a) a large amount of specific research gives a large quantity of facts, but like stones of the mosaic do hot make an entire picture; (b) in the basis of these researches no one finds entire creative conceptions; (c) the theories lose touch with practical design matter; (d) in contradiction to the classical architectural epoch, urban planning loses touch with the construction of buildings; (e) the practice of urban planning and the construction of buildings lose touch with historical traditions. The corollary of these academic and unnatural specialisations is a break not only from “the tie of times” but also from the ties inside the profession. This situation has an effect on the practice of urban planning and architecture; society returns to destructive criticism. It is impossible to get away from this fact. The author makes an attempt to change this situation for the better — at least in some measures. On the basis of many years study of the results of research this paper presents a concept of contemporary urban planning. This concept is not in the form of hard recommendations, but expedient methods for the solution of problems. It is proved by the author's projects.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to understand and to model the environmental performance of biodiesel produced by various Greek raw materials under current conditions. Three energy crops (rapeseed, sunflower and soybean) have been studied, with regard to their levels of biodiesel productivity. Throughout the entire process, current Greek climatic conditions and cultivation parameters have been taken into account. At the stage of assessment, we conclude that the environmental impacts per crop area indicate that soybean has the lowest environmental impacts. However, by assessing the results per quantity of produced biodiesel, the crop with the minimum environmental impacts is sunflower. This paper shows that environmental benefits from biodiesel have better results, compared to conventional diesel, thus leading to the conclusion that it is feasible to succeed improved environmental performance.  相似文献
